Do you take your OWN babyseat, as luggage on a plane flight, or do hirecar companies have baby seats (and more importantly - car with anchor points)? so bilby will be safe in a hire car? Suse? anyone else travelled interstate with a bub to know?

Heatwave note: lots of sunscreen and other things in tubes, say "store under 30 degrees", so i've put ours in the fridge for the heatwave before it goes all lumpy etc.

dh said last night - so what will we do, buy disposables for the weekend? i quickly dislodged that notion in his head. he's looking at accom that has washing machine of some sort, worst scenario, we bring back a wetbag in suitcase with two days of used nappies in it. and i will have to live WITHOUT little squirt for two days, LOL. Go the flushable liners ha ha. but i think i WILL pack cloth wipes, if bilbs can't have a bath for two days, cleaning the bottom will be even more important (have no idea if motel has bath and she hates water on her head).

so finally, my super enormous big wetbag comes into use.

i think my carry on luggage will JUST be the nappy bag. dh can carry her snacks and some books.

Gigi... i have travelled OS and taken our carseat with us (was only to NZ but that is OS) and had no probs with taking it...it got wrapped at the airport and was put through as 'fragile' another time (i had to pay for seat for DD she was 2) car seat sat in the chair and she sat on the carseat.

hmmm nappies..they need washing BUT i don't wanna!!!!

gigi - you usually ask hire company if they have a car seat available and they'll give you a car with seat for your hire (small extra charge) - might be worth ringing, mentionin you're flying in from interstate and need to know if you have to bring car seat.

well, anythough i had of doing an initial pre-wash of nappies while heat wave about to dry them has fallen flat on it's ass. fire nasty. ended up leaving last night, but had to come back home to sleep - no way was i sleeping away from home when it was deemed safe enough for me to be here. expecting wind change in a couple of hours, so i'll see what is happening and probably leave again. my bro is going to a community meeting in his town (about 20k's away - HOW that helps us i don't know!) at 10 to see what they have to say. he was out here til midnight-ish last night and apparently there was limited ember attack but it was pretty hairy watching the fire hit the peak of the hills about a km away - wind turned as it hit and turned it back on itself...


should have some fluffy and/or moogoo mail today. think i'll pick them up on my way to mum's =- maybe stuff my car a little fuller. waiting to find out what is happening with DH - fires within 2k's of here, and the IDIOT who was driving his truck for him has just dropped it out the front - yup, that's the way - put another quarter million dollars worth of stuff outside for him to be responsible for! will get him to call his boss and find out where he wants it left - it's not living here in these conditions - not at all! if it goes up, LOTS of diesel to burn it - makes the house more at risk - and ooh yeah, puts DH out of work while we're trying to get things fixed up through insurance

BRIGSY - i have everything that you can cross, crossed for you, that the fire is put out ASAP and leaves you and your home alone.

thanks for car seat tips BG adn KATONES, i told dh something similar (just my guess) but he wouldn't take my word for it, and i was just making a guess, so it's good to hear from you, that have done it for real.

what a pain that it takes a health scare to get dh to take bilby to meet her gran. before she was two, would have been cheaper, but i coudl't persuade him to make the trip with her (flying). Now her gran is in ICU at hospy in box hill (again), i have no clue whether two year olds are even allowed to visit in ICU, but we're going to try.

Some of the motels that dh rang this morning, asked him if he was a local, whose air con had broken down, apparently that's alot of their current bookings.

i'm really hoping bilby doesn't decide the flight is a good poo time, cos i have heard stories of how impossibly tiny, the nappy changing facs are, on a plane (even for a tiny baby, let alone a two year old who is super wiggly). I've been thinking of putting her in her koala harness backpack, and taking her for walks up and down the aisles (when allowed) cos i can't imagine her in a seat for a very long.

gigi- citylink has weekend passes, but check the website. re carseat check with the airline. as bilbs is still little they some let u bring the carseat on flight so she sits in that (jetstar), other say u have to check it in.

Gigi, we travelled to Sydney for a wedding when Tyler was 5mths old. We took our car seat as well as our pram and a huge suitcase and travel on bags. You should be fine.

If not, I have a spare car seat I could lend you - meet you at the airport if it helps but you should be fine to bring your own. I have a pram you can borrow if you want that, I also have a big sized baby bath if Bilby wont have a shower. You can fill it up and she can splash in that. Sure a tight squeeze but it would work.

I live not far from Box Hill - both Blake and Tyler were born at Box Hill Hossy :)

Gigi, we've hired a car in Melbourne before and it came fitted with the electronic tag for the toll so we didn't have to worry about having to pay for it ourselves. It should come with the car automatically but it might be worth mentioning it when you make the booking. They hire company is also able to supply the car seat for a small extra charge. When we travelled to Tas with Sophia we paid an extra $30 for the seat for the whole of the time we had the car, but that was a little way back so it's probably a little bit more expensive now. If you should choose to take your own I'm not sure how it works for children over 2 but when you're travelling with a baby all extras like prams and car seats can be checked in as part of your luggage without extra charge. Again, ask the airline as this is something that happens all the time so they have standard procedures in place.

cheap flights land at Avalon, hope hire cars are there too, not just at Tullarmarine.

you should be able to get a car from most airports hun - avalon is still fairly large. my aunt and uncle hire when they visit, and half the time they fly into avalon....

woot on insuring the nappies - that's why DH got the nappies in the car last night (yes, that was priority one!) - so hard to replace them all at same price

:lol: GiGi, it was one of the things I asked our contents insurer before we got our policy "Will my cloth nappies be included in the $$$ for clothing etc?" The lady was like, uh I guess? I told her no they werent the old school terry flats they were actual nappy-looking and all pretty and stuff. I dont care about our clothes, just dont want to have to replace thousands worth of nappies ;)

ETA - weeeeeeeeee I got fluffy mail even though its monsoon rains outside. Way to go Mr Postman haha My Sandman NN and a freebie as well. Can I just say I think B4B is fabulous, every single time Ive bought off there its been easy and quick, even had a few lovely ladies throw in extra's etc. Thankgod for sites like that, I can feed my addiction without going totally broke :)

i would be fine booking a car as soon as we arrived at Avalon, but because of the baby seat issue, i thought i should book ahead, to make 100% sure there is a car with a baby seat for us, or second choice, a car with anchor points there for us.

i don't want to risk having NOTHING for bilby's safety in the car. (apparently Box Hill is a long drive from Avalon.)
and don't want to cart her baby seat if it's not needed.

dh doen't want to take baby stroller.

but we ARE taking the mcn! (my win!). and MCN washing stuff - not sure if i'll use it, but will have it if i do. so i hope it's ok to transport washing powder adn not be accused of terrorism at the airport. i nearly packed bilby's tiny nail clippers, then i thought "airport security - better not".

1.30pm and so far
we have booked airflights twice at webjet
they have taken our money twice, and we still have no flights!!
so hard to get anyone on the phone to sort it out

with the car seat certain airlines actually let you take it on board and use it for bubs to sit in...they prefer it and find it is safer thann using an adult harness...they strap it into the seat for you......I know qantas do and think jetstar do but not sure who you are flying with....

Oh Gigi, I hope you sort out your flights ok. When are you planning on Flying? I can always lend you a pram and a portacot (if TB is not in a single bed or co-sleeping) if you need one and want one that you're assured is safe as opposed to a motel one that you just aren't 100% about.

Tyler is finally back in cloth! Yippee. We went up the street and I put him in an orange IB D'lish to go with his orange tshirt. Boy it felt good!

Hope you are all coping OK with the heat! I won't mention the temp here but DD is in her Babylegs. I have noticed it's a lot easy to toilet train when it's cooler as DD isn't drinking litres of water! We have been dry all day, even after our nap!

Gigi - pleased you got the fluffy mail, hope they fit. Might have some more coming your way soon if today's successes continue. With flying, check what type of carseat the hire car company supplies - often they aren't fabbo - once we even had them try and assure us the booster seat they supplied was safe for a 6 mth old:o We have a company in T'ville that hires good quality baby seats/prams/portacots at good prices! Maybe there is something similar down there? Def take a sling/carrier of some type on board, great for getting through the narrow aisle of the airplane, also don't forget something to suck on for ear pressure. DD won't BF during a flight, she is too excited so we take a dummy or a lolly pop. We bought some special toys for kids to use on planes, something that can be played on the tables or on laps or some new books - if you are getting something electrontic/noisy make sure it has volume control in case your fellow passengers don't appreciate repetitive noises :-) I always ask at check in if we can have a spare seat beside us, if they have one which they are usually happy to do, but I fly alone most times, I'm guessing with the three of you that would be the whole section??? Have never flown with webjet so don't know how their seats work? Oh and resist the urge to stuff the nappy bag to high heaven - it's a PITA to squeeze in with it and put it in overhead lugggage - try packing the toys/books into Bibly's own little back pack. Hope you get the money side sorted out ASAP!

most of my suitcase is taken up by the nappies easily! really, it's the night nappies that take up the room. it's so hot, don't need many clothes anyhoo, but i can't exactly go to the hospital in my sarong.

i think bilby and me will have most of monday free, cos dh has to go to a meeting at the hospital about his mum. the weekend, i don't know.

if any of you crazy Melb gals wants my mobile number (even at this incredibly no warning, late notice kinda thing), just pm me or email on g.j@internode.on.net - cos we WOULD LOVE to meet you all in person, but i totally understand if you don't, cos of short notice and need to bunker down where it's coolest to be, wherever you are. bummer about this heatwave situation!

we found a few inconsistencies on the Webjet site, so nothing surprises me now (plus they charged us twice and at one stage, had cancelled our flights TWICE!!! before we spoke to three people on the phone, the last one finally sorted out the mess!

but it's all sorted out now, thank goodness.

i hope washing powder in plane luggage is not a no no. i don't want to buy a normal size box in Melb, just to do potentially one wash load of mcn.

Katones - do you have an indoor clothes horse by any chance? i sort the washing adn hang it up INSIDE. doing anything outdoors means melting right now! me and dh have been sweating all day just inside out home (but not in the room with the a/c) cos computer is not in the a/c room. Short showers and being in the a/c room are just perfect relief. 95% of my life has been lived without any a/c, i don't know how.

thanks for all those "flying w kids" tips Saram, i had thought i would breastfeed bilby during takeoff and takedown, had not even thought of "what if she WON"T?". will have some crackers/snacks for her in the nappy bag pocket.

i can't get my head around packing toys, everything she has seems so bulky or so precious that i wouldn't want to risk losing it, but i have chosen her thinnest books to pack, she loves turning pages. Maybe i'll pack crayons too, as a "tray" activity, the crayons come in a small tin.

so all her stash is clean and good to go, except the childcare nappies she would have used today (i'll wash them as soon as we get home), but that's ok, plus whatever she wears tonight - i might make that TT-ing knickers and the night nappy she wears tonight. I don't want to leave that night nappy to sit in the dry pail for next three days, so maybe i will have to pack that, to come with me. SOmething i didn't realise until now, gotta do wsomething with what they're wearing JUST before you hop on a plane. hmm. the devil is in the detail. things you only work out by DOING, not just READING, which is what i've been doing the last two years - reading all these "travelling with MCN" threads, but never actually travelling with bilby (in cloth) before now.

Wardygirl, i might just take you up on your kind offer of a pram, i'll see how the Saturday goes (trial run WITHOUT a pram). We have paid $10 extra per night to have use of a cot - but i appreciate your offers so much!

fire isn't out, in fact some so and so has lit three more on the one side of town where we weren't already surrounded. i'm out, DH is out. he and my bro and SIL have done all they could possibly do to save the house short of staying there - and i refused to have them there - they are more important than property. SIL said from the three fronts that were combining more homes would be lost, and she doesn't hold out a lot of hope for us. it's terribly upsetting

but on the upside, they evac'd all the baby stuff - all my mcn's are outta there!

Gigi, RING THE JETSTAR BOOKING LINE!!!!! You need to have approval on Bilby's ticket for the child seat. It wil have CHST or something written on it if the child seat is approved. Anything that is CHECKED IN is fine, the limits are on your hand luggage. So if you want Bilby's clippers, put them in the suitcase. It is only BIG weapons they have to clear through customs (not that you would be going through customs but YKWIM.)

Anna, By the time Sarah stopped distracting me from driving in the right direction Motor Reg was closed :wall::wall::wall: I need to check if they are open tomorrow morning. I popped into target to get the stroller and she wanted to mess around in there too, so everything took 5 times longer than it should have, and I got to the customer service centre at 5 which was so FRUSTRATING!!!!

Kat - Em has issues with dairy, She is on prescription formula. It contains cows milk protein and iften a protein is attached to a lipid and many sugars are lipids. She is severly lactose intolerant, so she may be rashing to any lactose that is attaching itself to protein.
