I use flats - flannelette at first and terry later when they weren't humungous on DS. I got 2 dozen flannies and 1 dozen terry, but I have a few extra terry ones now because I sent a few back to the manufacturer for a replacement and they sent me extra. The Actil rainbow ones are nice colours but crap quality.... Dont even go there.
The flannies were invaluable for us because DS was a happy chucker for 6 months (OMG how much less washing did I have when that finally stopped??!! ) and they were absolutely everywhere and went everywhere with us. I cant remember a day when I didn't have one over my shoulder permanently! I still use them on the change table and for DS's bot between him having a bath and putting a NN on him. I used them for at least the first 6 weeks full time, until I figured out which MCN I wanted to get more of. Still use the terries when I'm having a lazy day and there's a basket of MCN to be folded and stuffed and I can't be bothered. Too easy.
