I don't use canesten as a regular thing, I only bought it when I suspected thrush in my nipples while BFing. I have since used it up when my son had nappy rashes or gastro so it's good to hear of an alternative to buy next time- thanks :D
My questions for the oils though- why once a week? As I said, I only used canesten when needed otherwise I was liking the idea of using it every wash when we have two sharing the same nappies/wipes. Would every wash be too much?

Nope not at all, I use it every wash.
Lavender, Tee Tree and Eucalyptus Oil (MUST be 100% PURE oils, not dilutions or solutions) are the only 3 oils that are anti-fungal, anti-viral and anti-bacterial.
So basically they will kill EVERYTHING lol. Great not just for nappies but for normal wash - will kill thrush on your undies, tinea on your socks and bacteria on you teatowels.
Which makes them excellent for bathing in, I put 4 drops in a full size bath for Charlotte everyday - work better than soap and keeps her fanny clean and free of iss-ewes ;) Also removes the need to use any soaps (not good for mucous membranes) or bath washes (chemical crap) in the bath. Lavender will heal burns up to 50% faster than 'burn cream' with no blistering at all and usually no scarring...same with cuts.
ETA: no, not water soluable, essential oils do not need to mix or dissolve into water for their properties to be accessed. In fact they don't need to be in the water at all... ;) but am faking so will come back to explain lol

I hear a lot about oils and I have to admit I haven't started using them because I keep meaning to follow up and learn more. I've heard of lavender oil for burns for example but how would you use it? Do you need to put it in a carrier oil first? What's a good carrier oil and how do you learn the concentrations needed?
For burns, just onto cottonwool and dab it on.
There really aren't too many occassions on a daily basis where you need to dilute these oils in any carrier oil. Unless using them on a tiny baby directly , then they must be diluted with carrier oil.
A good one though is Sweet Almond Oil.
Just remember less is more with most oils in most situations. And more can change their effect...IE 1 drop of lavender in a warm bath will make children calm and sleep better before bedtime....3 drops will make them hyperactive and keep them awake. (for tiny bubs bath, put one part essential oil in 10 parts carrier oil and add 1-2 drops of this solution to the bath or massage cream)

Thanks so much for your help! I just ordered eucalyptus, tea tree and lavender oil online :dance: I ordered some sweet almond oil too as we used that on my son when he was a baby so I figured with another on the way it's a nice oil to have around.

Just remember Sweet Almond Oil is a nut product (sorry, sounds obvious but so many people don't think about it) so keep an eye out for any reactions on a new bubs as an idication of an allergen.
Thanks. We were mindful of that last time and made sure to keep it off his hands/avoid ingestion. We have no history of allergies though so that helped us feel less concerned and happy to use it I guess.

We are another lot here who only found a decent nights sleep in a sposie (actually,most nights it is 2, one on top of the other as he out pees 1 :o)
We *think* it is the smell. I dont know if he has super reeky pee (I suspect so) but OMG, when you walked into the room after he as been in there for 8 hrs, the smell just assaulted you. So he was fine, up until about 2-3am and then was just awake constantly. Put him in sposies and he sleeps through till 5.30 -6.00.
Some people find the smell of sposies feral, but i guess the evil chemicals in them must do something to neutralise our ponky pee.

Hi Guys, I normally sit back and read what you have to say, but don't normally have too much to contribute :)
I noticed that a few of you use Eucalyptus Oil, and a few more possibly about to start? A couple of months ago our playgroup organised for a presentation from Kidsafe Victoria. It was very useful, and the one thing that surprised us the most is that Eucalyptus Oil results in a number of hospital visits to emergency a year for babies and toddlers. A few of us used Eucalyptus oil for cleaning as it is a great product, but have since stopped. I am sure it is OK to use in the nappy wash, but wanted to pre-warn if using it as a cleaning product.
I found this extract from the kidsafe website on their poison cabinets in new homes media release (just search on eucalyptus - it was the only result returned)

Sorry I can't be more useful/exact in my post...I'm trying to remember information from a couple of months ago. :) From memory it was one of the top 10 poisoning related visits to hospital. If you use it, it may be worth while to give kidsafe a call.
I am pretty sure that as long as you keep such things out of reach you should be fine to have eucaluptus oil in the house ;) and to use it too ;) ;)
Thanks elliskirsty. I know inhaling or drinking eucalyptus oil is dangerous. I plan to store it (and the other oils) locked up with our cleaning products. I'd like to start using it for some of my general cleaning and I think so long as you don't put it in a spray bottle and squirt it around to be breathed in then it would be okay.
All essential oils are toxic when ingested.
Then again, so is bleach and floor cleaner, I know which I would prefer to use to clean my house. Again, common sense and responsibility must be taken.
I lock my natural cleaners away just like I would any other cleaner. I also make sure I don't just "spray them around" so they mist.
Nappy news is that my customs are a tad held up because a second cut of material is hard to get hold of. I love the fact the maker keeps me updated!

quick question with the use of oils in washing, (this may be baby brain) but when u say put it in the rinse do u mean the rinse cycle on the machine when its almost done or when u r doing a pre-rinse before washing? we will prob be needing this cos our yard doesnt get much sun so most stuff is dried inside...

afm, stupid stupid stupid pea pods are leaking again!! arrggghhhh i need to do a strip wash on them i think to see if that helps a bit. i meant to do one this morning but forgot (baby brain). i wish i had never got them now. they almost always seem to leak.

I only tried one peapods and didn't buy any more! I foudn they were SO big for the weight size they were supposed to fit. Maybe on a chunky thighed bubba? And being snaps I could never get the fit quite right on his waist. Ugh. Was glad to offload that nappy.
We give our son amcal paracetamol if he needs it and it's never caused staining on nappies. I've heard the panadol thing but the only time he had panadol was when he was staying in hospital and we had him in disposables then.
Very exciting news about your little bubba too limeslice :D And yes- I think all essential oils are dangerous to ingest! I have heard that eucalyptus oil is pretty bad for children to inhale though.
hes got no idea and its hard coz he doesnt understand why i cant pick him up or carry him around but luckily he likes to walk lets hope he still needs a pram coz im gtting a strider plus which is already on laybuy and i realised i really have no need to buy any more nappies i have tons of prefolds and im hoping i'll only have to get mediums but hopefully washing everyday they can share the mediums if DS is still in them but he's got a long way to go till he wears anything remotely large hes just very skinny :)

Is that paracetamol also colour and sugar free? DD gets hyper off lots of preservatives/additives. I was iffy about trying the generic ones for that reason. Also do you feel it's as effective? Does it seem to upset tummies? Sorry I know you're not a pharmacist but the woman the other day had NFI. I only use panadol once in a blue moon but her nappies take ages to unstain.:

CL- we're out of it at the moment so I'm not sure of the ingredients sorry. I know it still has that saccarin crap stuff though. It seems to work well- it's still paracetamol I guess. Though he's always responded best to nurofen (possibly because he mainly has it for teething pain) so we mainly use that. The amcal one is orange flavoured.
random fact and not sure about how it is with teething bubs but with braces and plates for teeth they say not to take anti-inflammatory drugs cos it can stop/slow the movement of the teeth. something about the inflammation being the gums moving out of the way of the teeth and if u take the inflammation away then its harder for the teeth to move....
Bugger! There's always some other fact huh? A friend recommended nurofen over panadol for teething because of the anti-inflammatory! And it does work better. At least he's pretty much done with teething for a couple of years now... I will look into that for next time. Thanks :D
Can't use anything ibruprofen based because of her reflux. It'd eat into her tummy! My younger sister used to get asthma attacks with nurofen too. I think I might just stick with the panadol and deal with the nappy stains. It's working so don't want to swap it over now. She only has mega issues when more then one are errupting at once i.e 3 or 4 sitting under the gum.

gave her panadol and her temp didnt budge gave her neurofen 5 hours later and it was down and she was settled in 30 min.
did a canasten wash on my napies that were dirty so see if it helps our rash issue.
and im going to just add lavender into the wash every now and then adn do teh big canestan wash bi monthly

Hey guys, it's actually the sorbitol that stains the nappies, BUT panadol is so much gentler on their little tummies, personally I wouldn't give nurofen to a little one.
Plus, the stains tend to come out rather quickly (after around 3 washes.... or so), I haven't really found it to be an issue.

Yeah, it only lasts about 2 with me because we get heaps of sun here. If a nappy insert is looking a little bleh I leave it out for a couple of days and it comes up great after the next wash.:

Well, I used some lavender oil in a nappy wash and they smelt lovely! I wont bother again for now as there is no need but I'm glad I'm onto the oils :D I put a little water into the rinse aid section then a couple of drops- it sort of seemed like the oil would just get lost on its own?
I've finally got the newborn nappy buying bug! I've decided I want newborn sized velcro fitteds. Hoping to find a bundle second-hand but I'm not sure how many to get. I have at least 1/2 a dozen bumgenius I can set to small to dedicate to the newborn too.

I have been using lavender oil in all my washes, just for fun. We wash with soap nut powder here, so no fragrance, and it was so nice to have them smelling all beautiful!

I haven't even looked at nappies on ebay for ages. Since they banned used second hand there were so few lisitings when I looked.
I've ordered 3 kissaluvs so far- snaps and not velcro but I love the umbilical cord spot so I'm planning on having a few of these ready for baby's first few nappies at least. Just the idea is making me clucky and excited :D
Last time my son wore flannel flats for the first 24 hours while at the birth centre then we took him home in a white bumgenius OSFM.
