Marcellus, we have 5 Baby Beehinds bamboo with 4 pull covers, 2 Greenkids anytimes pockets, 1 bambineo, 2 peapods, 4 magicalls sized, and 1 ecobubs.

The sized ones are all small so will use them for new baby.

When you say flats do you mean the white square nappies that you fold and pin?

With terry-types (can get terry bamboo also, not just the old-fashioned cotton terry ones) you can use snappis, rather than pins

It's also possible to just pull the cover over snuggly to hold them in without pins or snappis. The motherease rikki covers are awesome-o excellent with flats.

Personally (and I'm sure it really depends on the baby anyway), I would go with flats or sized fitteds with a good cover rather than AIO or pockets in the first 3-6 months. Probably some of the AIOs would be fine, but I like the added protection against poo leaks that the nappy/cover combination offer.

Now, are you looking for a good night nappy also....?

I have 2 in nappies. Check out the Pop In. They are gusetted (sp?) so you won't get any newborn poo spillage. They are osfm and are nice and trim on a newborn. I would buy one full nappy and an extra insert, because you can use the cover more than once. Alternatively if you have some prefolds then just use the outer shell as a cover.

This nappy also fits my chunky 23 month old ok too. They are very basic looking and the colours are not exciting but they are a fast drying work horse nappy.

i used flats and mazalicious covers for the first 6-8 weeks with DD - most other stuff was too big, even the smalls - plus the MAL covers contained any leaks from poosplosions!
most osfm nappies will be too big until your bubba is at least 5kg - even when they say they fit smaller, the fit around the legs just doesn't contain anything at all and the last thing you want is nb poop leaking everywhere lol
DD is now nearing 7kg (at a guess) and is still in all her small AIO's, but also now fits med in some nappies, and most of her osfm nappies (not her CT's though).

I have a pile of terry flats that I've only ever used for spew cloths. Have no idea how to fold them into a nappy!

Marcellus, yep night nappies are on the list too but I have no idea where to start with those. DS is a heavy wetter overnight, his sposie is as heavy as a brick in the mornings!

So from the sounds of things, sized nappies and covers for the new baby and OSFM for DS which new baby will then grow into...any recommendations on brands?

How many in my stash should I have as a minimum?

I'm not sure how many you need with two in nappies. It also depends how often you want to wash. With newborns you probably need (at least) 20 day nappies and 2 night nappies to wash every other day (assuming you can get everything dry in one day). That's why I recommend flat ones - much, much cheaper and quick drying. Unless you can find some osfm that truly work with newborn.
They need far fewer nappies as they get older though, so 20 'shared' ones would probably be enough for the 2, washing every other day.

Maz's night nappies are great. Wild Child ones are also good for heavy wetters.

I think you would probably need at least 30 nappies for 2, and I would stick to OSFM fitteds and covers as much as possible. I have just gotten DS1 out of nappies during the day so have had 2 in cloth for 7 months. I have about 10 AIOs and 10 fitteds and some covers. I have used these as our going out nappies and at home I use terry flats. Cheaper, fast drying and I can fold them to be the right size for both boys. Even if you don't want to use them all the time I would recommend having some flats for the days when your MCNs don't dry in time.

A friend of mine has got all sorts of nappies for her baby and she said none of the OSFM ones were any good until he got to about 6kg. She said that she liked the spunky butts small fitteds and prefolds when he was really little.

I have found with my boys that they need a microfibre booster on the top of their nappies to stop them leaking. It seems to absorb their wees faster than the bamboo or hemp. Otherwise there is no difference between the fabrics used with boys/ girls.
