    Fail safe burping techniques???

Has anyone got a technique that is absolutely guaranteed to get a burp out? I really struggle getting anything out of Izzy at all, and I've tried what I think is everything - sitting on my lap, lying over my knee, over my shoulder, doing "sit ups" and cycling her legs. I'll maybe get a burp every 4th feed and it really affects her colic and reflux.

So, I'm hoping someone has got some secret tip they can share with me.

Lulu i used to sit DD on my lap, hand under chin as normal with a little pressure on her sternum with the palm of the same hand and gently rock her back and forth side to side, the air bubble then find the middle and makes it's way up and out, i describe it to been like a spirit level with the air bubble in the middle,

Wish I knew! I always thought I was pretty good at burping DD (by patting her back - most effective way I found) - but then we went to Adelaide and MIL just had to sit DD on her knee and she would do a MASSIVE burp! Honestly! MIL got 3 times more wind out of DD than I EVER have!!!! Seriously, all she did was sit DD on her knee!

I sit Chels on my knee, hand under chin and bounce her up and down lightly.

My DH swore by holding Flynn up by his guts!! DH would lean Flynn onto his hand so his bodyweight was largely supported by his tum. Sounds extreme I know but once they can hold their head up it is really just an extension of "baby-over-the-shoulder", and in his opinion provides greater control over where and how much pressure is applied to tum than just over the shoulder.

My Bianca suffers from reflux and barely used to burp!I found doing "sit ups" slowly worked realy well, even placing her on my arm where she is facing the ground with her head near my elbow for a few minutes then siting her up worked wonders too! It's also a fantastic possition for when they are bored and whingey.
    Good luck !

Either yours or your partners, Mans hands are better because they are bigger.. one on the tummy and under neck.. and then firm rubs up or down their back.. Depending on which way works for your bub. Always worked for us.. also across the lap with a firm hand up or down the back

Nicholas was the same at that age. I found that laying him over my arm, facing down, and patting on the back. Nic has colic and reflux too, but the colic is getting much better as he gets older. Also, we are formula feeding now, and I burb him every 50mls of the bottle. That way, he doesn't end up with a tummy full of bubbles at the end of a feed. I found this on the Save our Sleep website.

Jovie and Matilda burped like champions, we just sit them up on our lap & do a "stretch" where we straighten them out with one hand under their chin, and the other under their arms at the back and pull slightly up to straighten their spine. Then we'd rub their back for a minute and then stretch again.... always brought up HUGE burps I couldn't do myself.

Great thread Lulu! My Isabelle is the same- and then when she vomits every few days i wonder if tis because I havent burped her enough.... great suggestions too! My MCHN suggested changing from lying to sitting kind of quickly to use the change in gravity but I find even that doesnt work at times.... Good luck!

i do have a position that gets a burp out when just patting her back doesn't do the job. I only hope I can explain it right. Its easy once you know what I mean.

You hold the baby with her back against your body, and you are just holding her with one arm, and your forearm is against her stomach. So your forearm is putting a little pressure on her tummy, and you can either hold her up against your stomach, or sort of rest her on your hip. If the burp doesn't come up right away, you sort of rock back and forth so that your forearm is slowly applying a little more pressure, then releasing, then a little more etc... Hollie always gets her burps up this way (and sometimes a little milk so watch out), and when she was very colicy, this was the only position she wouldn't cry in.

I hope I have explained it well enough for you to give it a go, it is amazing how well it works with Hollie.

Over the shoulder worked for my first two but the only thing that worked for Caleb was to sit him on my lap, support his chin and straighten his spine.

They are all different so I never had a "failsafe" way. I just found the best way by trying different positions.

i found that sitting bub on your lap and holding there arms above their head for a few secs then repeat it till a burp worked well!!
up over the shoulder and a bit of a pat on the back worked too but sounds like youve already tried that !!

nixon always burps when someone picks him up... spesh when grandma comes round... when ppl are in his face saying oohh how cute little baby etc... they get a burp in there face ... its funny....
