I am not a fan of this reflux business!

This might not even be a proper post becuase I'm so braindead and exhausted.

DD2 was diagnosed with reflux even before I got out of hospital (was in for 5 days) becuase I felt something wasn't right with the constant screaming (even the midwives couldnt settle her), being unsettled and LOADS of vomiting out her nose. I broke down crying in hospital when she stopped having wet nappies and literally vomited everything she ate. Projectile, through her nose and screamed and screamed.

The pead suggested thickening her feeds, which has cut down a little bit of the puking, but not all of it.

She's in SO much pain, the poor little thing. DH can't settle her (she just won't settle with him for some reason), so it falls on me. She screams for 3 hours at a time, won't sleep, only *just* nods off then starts screaming in pain again. I literally held her for 6 hours this morning...and last night she was awake for 7 hours.

Wind is easy enough to get out of her but it's the back arching, stiff, grimacing, gulping/swallowing, vomiting, total screaming in pain that distresses me.

She has one solid sleep a day of 2-3 hours, which comes after a long unsettled screaming period, so I think she wears herself out.

I think she'd benefit from some medication...what do you think?

I hardly have time to eat, drink or sleep...she wants to be held upright ALL the time...despite having a bouncer chair thingy (sat upright) and a reflux wedge under her cot mattress.

I also feel horrible for DD1 who is obviously lacking a bit of attention from me because I am holding DD2 nearly all the time.

Gah, this is rough. I HATE seeing her in pain.

I have a Dr appointment for myself on Thursday...would it be too forward/rude to tell her about DD2 and ask for some medication for her?

Aw, that doesn't sound good at all hun. I would DEFINITELY be asking your GP about what options there are for medication (or any other solutions she might have).

Hope you're able to find something soon - and in the meantime I hope the little one feels better.

Congratulations and Hugs to you sounds exausting you poor thing.
My DS1 had reflux but nothing to extent your DD is suffering and he was medicated at 5 weeks. We also saw an osteopath which helped as well.

I think meds would be a good idea as she really needs to be pain free so she can sleep and grow, otherwise she will end up clinically tired and will be even more upset and agitated and its just a vicious circle.

    Good luck with doctors.

Yep medication will help, either Zantac or losec, given how bad I am guessing the losec would be better as it's stronger.

Keeping her in a carrier and upright will help and also a dummy as the sucking provides comfort.

It's so hard seeing them like that. Hugs for you both xx

Do all Chiropractors treat babies or shall I ask Dr about a referral? She is seeing an Osteo about her hips in a few months (the hosp referred her), so a Chiro makes sense too.

Started trying a Dummy while we were still in hosp...have tried 3 or 4 different brands and she's not a huge fan. She just seems to have a tiny mouth and 99% of the newborn dummies I've tried are too big for her. I have one that she seems to be able to take without gagging - which is a newborn one of DD's that I sterilised in desperation - but I have NO idea what brand it is, so there's only one and it's treated like gold! LOL.

My pinky finger seems to be the perfect size and shape for her to suck on...only problem is, it's attached to me!

    Reflux sucks.
Is she breastfed? If formula, you might also want to consider allergies etc if it's dairy-based. If she's not keeping enough down then you probably do have to medicate or deal with it somehow. She doesn't sound like a happy chucker!

Hehe if she was a happy chucker I might not mind so much! :-P

She is formula fed on a non-dairy formula...DD1 and I are both Lactose Intollerant (diagnosed by blood test) and DD1 had major pain and problems with dairy as an infant, so I didn't want to go through them again with DD2. Talked it over with the Pead and everything, and they were fine with the decision.

Have another appointment with MCHN tomorrow to check if she's still losing weight...I suspect she's put a little bit on because she's puking less with the thickened feeds, but it hasn't stopped it completely.

There is a happy baby newborn one, there are premmie ones available too.

Glad you are onto the weight.

You need to find a Chiro or osteo who specializes in children, either your gp or mchn may know a local one.

    You poor thing
My DS had reflux but nowhere near as bad as your DD has. He went on Losec at 2 weeks and was off it by 10 weeks. Still spewed terribly up until about 8 months but was a happy chucker.
We tried a chiro who was excellent - he actually looked DS over at the first appointment and said that while they in a lot of cases can help reflux, in DS's case everything spinal was fine so he wouldn't waste my time and money. While I was frustrated because I desperately wanted a solution I was amazed at his honesty!

I am in Perth too so PM me if you want details. My friend also takes her DDs to a chiro as well so I can give you a couple of names if you're interested.

Your story sounds very much like mine. My DD started the screaming when I was still in hosp too and the midwives couldnt settle her either. I recommend getting her started on the losec ASAP. My paed mucked around and put my dd on zantac at 3 weeks which did nothing, he never listened to me about how bad it was. I researched and demanded losec so she started on that at 4 months. It helped alot, though never fully stopped the pain, but compared to how it was it was a miracle. Try and get onto meds asap as this would have helped me DD not have other probs associated with it, like pain association with feeding, unable to isolate muscles, and super tight muscles from all the back arching etc - We ended up having to see a physio for months.
gluck, I know how upsetting it is seeing your child in pain when you feel like you can't do anything to help. Watch out for yourself too, I developed PND, which was because of how sleep deprived and hopeless I felt about the whole situation.
My DD is almost 19 months now and is still on losec, but most babies are off meds by 6-12 months.

    to you.

All I can do is echo others - get onto Losec ASAP. We also started with Zantac and it did nothing at all. We also still take DS to an osteo which has been fabulous.

    Best of luck xx
