    Weaning off Losec

DS (7mths) has reflux and has been on 10ml of Losec for maybe about 5 months now. Around about xmas time i reduced his dose down to 5ml and things continued on quite smoothly. About a week ago i completely stopped his dose altogether to see how we went.. it seemed fine although the past few days he has had those really horrible 'wet' sounding hiccups and today i can only get him to drink about 60ml of a bottle at a time and he just screamed the house down while i was trying to give him solids, which he has never done before. He was choking and crying. Is this a sign that the reflux has not improved and to try meds again? He still vomits a least 2 or 3 times after every feed.

Hugs to you.. My DS is 4.5 months and has been on 10ml of Losec for about 3 months and when I think he is having a really good run I think about reducing his dosage and then taking him off all together. I have tried a couple of times and have gotten to the second day and he has not been himself so put him straight back on his meds... He sleeps through the night, is a very very happy baby so I am very hesitant to take him off it. I would maybe suggest putting him back on the 5ml for a couple of weeks and see if that improves anything, if it doesn't at least you know it isn't the reflux and if it does fix that problem then you know to keep him on... That's all I can suggest... HTH. Good Luck

Thanks for your advice. I think i will try putting him back on the Losec. It wasn't until he started those horrible hiccups that i realised he hadn't had them for ages, and maybe it was a sign that he wasn't doing as well as I thought. He had been going so well while on Losec, sleeping, eating, etc, that i just thought it was time to give it a try and stop it. All this reflux stuff is so hard isn't it! Thanks for your reply

oh no poor bub, id say get him back on the Losec til he stops vomitting. DS has been on Losec since he was 4 months old, started on 10mg, went up to 15mg and then back down to 10mg. He stopped vomitting at about 14 months old, and the last 2 days i have actually forgotton to give him his Losec! I am waiting for the reflux to come back, but i might just hold off on the Losec and see what happens.

If you are really concerned about him taking the Losec, chat to your GP aout it, of course it is better that they dont have any medication, but it is far better to have the medication and feel better, than stop the medicationa nd feel in pain all the time and not want to eat anymore.

Reflux is an waful thing to try and live with and it is awful seeing your precious child in so much pain and discomfort. Huge hugs to you, hope bub feels better soon.

Thanks for your replies girls. I also contacted the Reflux Association and they said it sounds like he definiately needs to go back on it and also back on the higher dose of 10mg until things settle down again, then reduce it back to the 5mg. She also suggested this was a bad time to wean as he has just begun crawling and teething and they are two of the things that can cause the reflux to flare up again. At least i know that he is definiately on the meds for a reason still. Thanks again for your replies - very much appreciated
