Wind Upright Sleeper No Sleep for Mum

    Hi,

I've just joined his morning...haven't got much of an idea on how this chatting works as it's my first time but I'm hoping somebody is or has been through what I'm dealing with at the mo'?? My first bub 3 weeks old, extreme wind, have tried everything I can think of. She rarely sleeps unless it's in an upright position on my chest unless she's had a few bad days then will crash in her basinette for a few hours, am sooo tired it' s not funny!!! Have been told I can 't give her anything cause she's so young, I've read some previous posts on wind and have tried all the tricks this morning. Have been up since 12.30am holding her while she slept due to wind then at 5am did the next feed and 'burped' her for 30-40mins, then the screaming started and has only briefly stoped for a few minutes a couple of times. Sine last feed I've tried rubbing her tummy in a clockwise motion, have put her on a pillow on my lap on her tummy and rubbed her back, have tried the bicycle legs/lifting her legs and the usual rubbing & patting her back holding her upright. She has screamed the whole time I've been doing all this, has sick 'burped' around 6 times a few small ones and a few medium sized ones....am at my wits end and am now crying myself!! Her basinette is raised at one end as suggested and yesterday tried giving her warm water in a bottle to calm her tummy but that didn't seem to do much either. Does anyone have any other ideas??? I need some sleep too!! Thank you

I haven't tried it but I asked about it at Mothers Group yesterday and was told that at 3 weeks she's too young for it that I shouldn't give her anything until she's 1 month....dunno if I can last another week of this!! Living on 1-2 hours sleep if that, is only my partner and I and he has to work...not getting help off family/friends so am finding it hard, so thank you for replying-know I'm not 'alone'. Might ask the doctor if I can give it to her....whatcha reckon??

Oh you poor things . It's horrible isn't it?

My DS#2 had terrible wind when he was a newborn. My child health nurse suggested we use Infacol before each feed. The packaging says that it is meant to be used from one month of age, but she said it is perfectly fine to use from 2 days of age. (Now I would suggest you contact your own MCHN or chemist yourself before trying it, just for your own peace of mind). The health nurse said it can take up to 24 hour for it to work, but I found it worked straight away. It made a dramatic difference for us. (I started using it when he was 5 days old)

Some other products you could try are Brauer Colic Relief - this is all natural and available at most pharmacies, or Infants Friend. You could always ring your health nurse for ideas otherwise.

If you are still having trouble with sleep, I highly recommend trying an Amby baby hammock. Hammocks snug your bub in and it helps with wind and colic.

I really hope you find something that works for you soon, I know how hard it is .

My partner bought some Brauer Stomach calm the other day which might be the same sort of thing...but again I was told she's too young to use it!! I'm gonna have to ring the nurse or go higher to the doctor today...don't wanna get to a point where I start taking it out on my little one cause am so tired, I know it's not her fault and she's still developing it's just hard to keep telling yourself that when she's screaming & upset. Thanks for the suggestion of a hammock...was thinking maybe a bouncer but that sounds better!! Might even splash out and get a hug a bug sling thing I saw one of the girls at M/Group with one and her bub was windy like mine and liked being on her chest too and she said it worked well....only thing is they're like $85 for what looks like just a bit of material....but for sanity I might get one! Oh thank god she's gone to sleep on me again...might try the basinette and see if I can get 30-60 mins sleep myself..fingers crossed, thanks everyone for advice. help & support I appreciate it

I found with my 2 windy bubs that the sling helped heaps for during the day. I used a hammock for my second baby & it helped heaps, she co-slept and went in the hammock especially at painful & windy days... I could bounce her up & down & swing it to help the pain.

Have you tried the "wind" infant massage? I used to do that twice a day & found it helped move the wind for my bubs. I would rub the belly clockwise starting just above left of the umbilical cord. & run in a clockwise circle for a few minutes, than a gentle rub all over, move the legs gently in a bicycle motion to help move things down. If you rub their hands and massage in between their index finger & thumb gently to relieve stress (its a chinese point my acupuncturist said to rub) as well was gently pushing on the tips of all fingers. There is a point on the back of their legs mid calf which is for their tums as well so I would rub there & rub down the backs of their legs.

Its so hard, I was in tears a lot when my newborns cried in pain & I was tired & had tried everything. For sleep, I co-slept in the very early months because I couldn't get my bubs to sleep anywhere else the first time & the second time I didn't want her too.

    Hi'ya Christy,

Thanks for advice...and nice to know other people have had same problem. Can you please offer some tips on how you co-slept with your bubs?? There are sooo many differing opinions on what to do or not to do with sids and safe sleeping that I'm not sure if I'm doing it right?? She didn't go down this morning and I was told that as my partner smokes that I shouldn't have her in our bed with the risk of sids and as we don't have a spare bed/mattress I had to sleep on the floor on my yoga mat proped up with pillos under my head so bub was elevated on my chest/tummy...have really sore back now!! Think I'll get the camping mattress out and give that a go. Also some say to put a pllow on her other side to stop her rolling if she sleeps next to me but then others say not to have any pillows as she can roll over and suffocate....very confusing re what to do and how to do it properly/safely as am pretty paranoid as she's my first bub. Thanks

I really recommend going to an osteo or a chiro who specialises in babies. Both girls have been, one for reflux & head turning issues and the other for wind. With the wind the osteo found she had some tightening under her diaphram which she helped to relax. Bubs has been much better at burping since then.
