How about just order a soft drink and don't offer an explaination?
I'm not TTC and not pg but do this - sure, people think I'm weird but sometimes I just don't want alcohol and I love my wine usually.
Other great excuses would be "nah, this pic of my hubby's looking attractive and he says that means I've had too much." - perfectly reasonable to say sober.
Or just (slurred) "are you trying to get me drunk so you can sleep with me?" Most people won't buy you a drink after that one.
oh my gosh how funny. these are all great! ive been thinking about how to get around that one, as were getting married next month and as soon as that is over, i know everyone is going to be watching my alcohol consumption like a hawk!
These are great excuses! I was just discussing this with DH yesterday, as we have just started TTC'ing and are often out for drinks with friends. I like the mocktail idea, as well as the antibiotics excuse.
Not sure how these work when you are at a small gathering at someone's house though... we are going to stay with DH's parents this weekend for his Dad's bday and we usually all have a few wines together. I don't mind telling them we are TTC if that's what hubby wants to do, but I think I want to wait to tell the family til we have news to announce. Maybe I will just tell them I had a big night the day before we get there and need a break from the alcohol! :P
will be putting them to good use as of today! got my positive opk, so off we go with the waiting again!
How about this one for when out with friends... "no thanks, I am SO HOT if guys see me drinking they will keep buying me more drinks all night... and then I'll never get any peace"
ok... thats funny... if you could see me, you would think its funny...i think its funny... trust me, its funny...
I've always said "thanks, I'd love a lemon, lime and bitters this round... light on the bitters"
Sounds alcoholic but has virtually no alcohol if it's light on the bitters.
I am an epileptic, (no really)
so i had to think of great reasons to not drink, without saying why,
No thanks, I am on antibiotics
No thanks I'm driving
No thanks my yoga teacher says its bad for me
no thanks my tai chi teacher syas it interferes with my chi energy
No thanks my buddhist master says its bad karma
No it intereferes with my anti psychotic meds
i just dont like it lately
mind your business
my father was an alcoholic
i'm morally against binge drinking
i'm only 17!!
i just had one before i drove here
sorry i've been drinking all day
i've had a liver transplant
in a past life i was a drunk prostitute , i'm trying to make it right,
oh do you drink do you?
sorry i leave the drinking and swearing to my husband
"No thanks, I'm on a list for a liver transplant and if I drink I'll go straight to the bottom"
(sorry sim1 you beat me to it)
Or if you really want to scare people you could get that zealous look in your eye and tell them you're in 'recovery' and invite them to an AA meeting........
Ok, but I"m only having one tonight because I'm driving, actually let me get this round.
& then you can get a fake drink, or if they don't let you get the round accept it but just don't drink it, carry it around for a while & then 'loose' it.
or "Actually I'm really thirsty can I just get a water / lemonade etc"
on the other hand most of these excuses make people think you are ill and maybe that would be worse than people thinking you were trying to conceive.lol
theres no shame in it, and the practice is fun.
sim1
I see your point sim. However if TTC takes you a long time you probably don't want people asking how it's going. Also if you don't want people to know you're pregnant until 12w then alerting them to the fact you're TTC means their pregnancy radar will be on high sensitivity.
Yep, it IS worse to have people knowing you're trying and asking how it's going - it's not very nice to know that eyes are on your belly all the time and knowing people are thinking you're hiding something when all you've done is put on a bit of weight!
Sim, your comment is a bit insensitive. It's nothing to do with shame about 'trying' and a lot to do with it being none of anyone else's business as well as taking the pressure off yourself by having everyone expecting news that you want more than they ever will.
