    High prolactin-anyone?

    Hi again!
So my fertility clinic called to say my prolactin levels have been elevated in my last two blood tests-normal levels are 600 and something and mine's 800. They recommended an MRI and I was pretty freaked out at first but I'm calmer now and I've been trying to get some information about this.
From what I've read up; the hyperprolactin caused by a benign pituitary tumour comes with symptoms; none of which I've experienced. My periods are regular and every test has shown I ovulate.

I guess my question is; has anyone experienced this high prolactin before? What steps did your doctor take for it? I hate to do tests that are unnecessary (and expensive) just for the sake of it.

And of course; I'd love to hear your success stories!

    Thanks in advance....
    Z

I have high prolactin and so does minniemouse.

High prolactin is not always caused by a benign tumour. Sometimes it is just idiopathic. Those tumours very very rarely turn into anything dangerous or deadly. The MRI is just checking if you have one, and if so, what size (micro <10mm, or macro >10 mm) where it is and whether it is putting pressure on your optic nerve.

There are drugs you can take to lower your prolactin, like dostinex. Seemed to work fairly quickly for me and my levels maxxed out at about 1400 once!

Prolactin (pro lactate) is the hormone we have in high levels when breastfeeding which suppresses ovulation and it is one common reason why women have ovulation disfunction.

I hope this helps! And don't despair, despite my high prolactin I did manage to eventually fall pregnant (I needed IVF, but NOT because of the prolactin).

    Thanks for d response Maruschke!
I'm just wondering why they'd be so quick to send me to take photos of my brain (lol!) I don't have the blurry vision, headaches or irregular cycles. (I guess you can tell I don't like tests)
Hope your pg's going along smoothly...

When I was TTCing my first I wondered if I had high prolactin levels which might prevent me from falling pregnant. For many years before TTCing (actually as long as I can remember) I have always produced a small amount of milk and colostrum. Especially during showering I was able to squeeze my breasts and get drops of milk and colostrum. I read that this can sometimes be a sign of high prolactin levels. It turned out not to be a problem for me though.

    hi zig,

as Maruschke said i also have high prolactin, have had for many years, without medication my levels sit around 1100 (according to my pathology place 80-500 is normal), levels that high stop me ovulating. i think with pcos its normal to have levels on the higher side.

i have had a pituitary tumour found on mri but at that time i was pregnant and my levels were 2400, i also have no symptoms when it is high or low (except when i had the tumour then i had headaches constantly).

try not to stress, if they really want to scan you can you ask for a CT first because it is cheaper and much less stressful for you to have done. its easily controlled with medication once a fortnight for me
