How much folate is enough to TTC? I always thought 0.5mg is enough but read an article earlier today saying it should be 5mg to improve fertility and lower the chance of NT defects.
You should not exceed 1mg of folic acid without medical supervision. 0.5mg is the usual recommendation but I think elevit used to have 0.8mg (when I was taking it a few years back, not sure if it's the same now?).

we were advised to take 5mg of folic acid by the genetic counsellor after our angel was born with spina bifida. He told us that you are better off taking a separate folic acid and a separate iron tablet than taking the pregnancy tablets that have everything in them, but that may just be a case by case thing.
People with a family history of neural tube issues are often advised to take 5mg when ttc and during pregnancy. For most other women, the recommendation is 0.5mg per day.
