    Lap&Dye and Hysteroscopy-your experience?

    Hi everyone!
I have a lap n dye this Tuesday and even though I'm being strong for the sake of my lovely DH; I'm a tiny bit scared.
I guess I'm just looking for info on what to expect; and most importantly; success stories from those it helped!

Thanks in advance-I'm off now to keep anxiously biting my nails in secret...

I had a lap and d&c in 2010 - while it wasn't for infertility - I can relate my experiences for you......
I was also meant to have a dye test, but the surgery took so long they ran out of time.

So prior to surgery you have to do the bowel prep thing, so be prepared for liquid pooing for half a day - I took the half day before off for this. Mine was meant to be day surgery, again due to the time it took and lateness of evening when I was awake enough, I stayed in over night.
I wasn't prepared for the amount of blood post surgery due to the d&c (which is usually standard procedure) - lots and lots of it and a great big mumma pad like a nappy! But once I cleaned myself up, there was very little loss after that.
I had the usual shoulder tip pain from the gas that they expand your abdo with, and it was managed with wheat bags and paracaetamol fairly well. This was pretty much gone by the time I left hospital the next morning around 10am.
The post op pain was managable - I had 4 holes - one in the belly button where they put the camera in, two either side and down a little for the instruments and one just on the pubic hair line where I had a drain in to get rid of some of the fluid used to wash things out during surgery. This was removed the next morning (another reason I had to stay in).
The puncture wounds are very tender, I had difficulty standing up straight for 2 days and gradually got better after that. No baths, swimming, sex for 4 weeks due to cervix dilation.

I bled really lightly for about a week and my period came at it's normal time the next month.

Like I said mine wasn't to help get pregnant, but for endo and pain associated, and that has been so much better since.

    Good luck!!

Wow Ausgirl your experience sounds full on! You poor thing.
I also had a lap and dye in December. It was day surgery and I didn't have to do the bowel prep. I only had two incisions, one in the belly button ad one in the pubic region. There was meant to be three however I didn't have adhesions as they had expected. Endo was removed though and I went home about two hours after the surgery.
As for recovery I had a lot of shoulder pain that lasted for a couple of days. Incisions were a bit tender but didn't really bother me. I only had a couple of days off work. The best thing is my af this time was so 'normal'! Cramps were so mild and it last three days. Yet to see if I get random spotting to follow though. Hopefully it will also result in a bfp with this cycle of ovulation induction.
Hope it goes well for you.

    Hey zig

I had them done (plus d&c) in June last year. Worst part was the gas they pump into your stomach gradually escaping up through the diaphragm over the next few days, as the gals have said. I found it really uncomfortable but a lot of people have no issues.

I had some cramps and bleeding but only for a day or do.

Don't underestimate the amount of time you need off work. I had four days but should have taken a week - anesthetic can knock you round. Again though, others are back up and about very quickly.

I'm really glad I had the procedures as it helped us rule things out. I was very lucky to fall pg the next cycle (with clomid also).

Good luck hon, hope your 'renovations' go smoothly and you have a smooth recovery...and BFP of course x

PS feel free to PM if you have any questions

Will be back to write my experience. I'd happily have it done again, gave us answers and I did get a BFP 8months later so it didnt happen overnight but I do believe it helped us conceive naturally.

my experience was similar to Keta's - mine was investigative, and the worst thing for me was the feeling of the anasthetic going up my arm - the drugs felt like they "burned" up my vein! totally weird senstation! I had never had surgery before so it was all weird to me....

funniest thing was that the nurse was male, the drs' were male, and there were a couple of other males in the room, I vaguely recalled when I was wheeled in...and I knew that all my girly bits were going to be up for exposure... when when I woke all the nurses were women! It was an out of body experience - I didn't even know it was over! ha ha... very disorienting... !!
I work up crying and coughing - and the nurses were lovely - just kept saying, you'll be okay, crying is normal etc etc.... got me tissues, wiped my face and let me blow my nose etc.... I couldn't stop the coughing though (I had a cold at the same time).

I agree with buffy, I luckily had it during school holidays so was able to have the following week off work, I had it on a thursday) and it was great to be able to just sit around. I was bleeding for about 9 days after - but AF was also due the same week, so i don't know what was what!!

I went home and bascially slept the afternoon, I was also given panadeine forte for the pain, belly was tender for a few days, but I agree it was probably a week before I felt normal - also the dr's say don't do anything physcially demanding for two weeks, and no DTD in that time.

You will be anxious (I was teary going in) which is normal! But it really isn't anything to worry about.

Thanks a lot ladies. It's scary cos like you myturn; this will be my first surgery-I've never even had an IV before! The only times I've had as much as a needle in me were to draw blood for tests. Your stories are making me feel like I know what to expect now.

    Keep them coming!

    Hi Zig.

I had a lap, hyst & dye studies in March'10 for infertility investigative reasons. Like you it was my first ever procedure I'd never had an IV or any type of anesthetic before. The day I was scheduled to go in they had an emergency come in so I ended up waiting for around 5hours before it was my turn. I was so nervous that I broke out in a rash and got the shakes, the nurses kept asking me if I'd had a reaction to drugs they had given but I hadn't had anything. They were all lovely and calmed me as much as possible. The thing I was most nervous about it laying there so vulnerable with my lady parts spread for the world to see, but it's just another body for them - like a mechanic working on a car I kept trying to tell myself. Once I was on the trolley they put me in a small room just off from the theater and there they put the IV in and covered me in warm blankets as I was shivering. The IV wasn't bad at all. A nurse sat and chatted with me while I waited for them to finish prepping the theater. They then wheeled me into the theater and there were about 8people in the room and they were all men. I wanted to get up and run out. But they put the gas mask on me and told me to take a few deep breaths and then the next thing i remember is I woke up in recovery talking to myself with a lovely lady nurse giggling. She wouldn't tell me what I said though...I often wonder if I spilled my darkest secrets to her lol. I got up and walked into the room where they sit you up and monitor how your going- they gave me water and a sandwich which I was so grateful for as it was now about 8 and I hadn't had anything since very early in the morning. I felt fantastic not nauseous or light headed - Infact I felt strangely 'high on life' - I had a small amount of period pain but I was due for my periods that day?? I didn't see the doctor as it was late by then and the nurses said I just call the clinic and make an appointment. Though they told me all went well and the procedure only took 40mins and I had two incision sites - belly button and just above the pubic line.

I went home at about 8.30 that night- so just day surgery. By the time I got home I was beginning to feel a small amount of discomfort in my shoulders. I went straight to bed and fell instantly asleep. I woke during the night with discomfort in the rib cage and shoulders, and had bled onto the sheets from the belly button incision.

Over the next couple of days the shoulder discomfort became slightly painful and I had a few moments when I was laying down where I had intense pain in my rib cage and felt I couldn't breathe - But as soon as I sat up that intense feeling went away. I didn't bother taking any pain killers or panadol except for that first night. By day three I felt pretty good - although I organized a week off work. I bled for about a week but I believe it was my periods aswell.

Overall the experience was no where near as scary as I anticipated and I would easily do it all over again. The best part was... 3months later we got out BFP first round on clomid and have happily been cooking a bubba since.

Good luck - it will all be fine! Try not to be too nervous there really is nothing to be nervous about

If you are nervous, tell the pre op nurse, they will give you a mild sedative to make you feel nice and calm and relaxed. In my experience (had 4 ops inmy life), the staff are really sympathetic to nervous patients! Tell them up front and you'll have no worries!

After staying without food or water since midnight and spending about 8hrs in the hospital; they came to apologise that they couldn't do d procedure. Something about a complicated surgery that tied them down. They shifted it till next Tuesday-and DH won't be around all next week. I'm not supposed to drive for 48hrs after d surgery and I have so much lined up to do next week. I was pretty upset at the thought of going through the emotional preparation all over again; but I eventually calmed down cos I'm a firm believer of the fact that things happen in my life for a reason.

    oh bugger!!

reading Rosey's post reminded me of the blankets - and when I had mine, it was the weirdest thing waking up and the blanket was wrapped around me the same as it was when I fell asleep.. and that was weird cause I knew my legs had been up for the world to see, but it didn't feel like it at all - I didn't even know I was wearing a pad until the nurse got me up a couple of hours later to go to the toilet. it's a really surreal experience, and I kinda look back on it fondly now lol.
DH was very lovely, and bought me roses, which surprised the nurses. I hope you have someone else who can look after you, I really did need looking after that day especially. The day after I was okay at home alone - but you do need someone with you for the first 24 hours.

It was mainly the thought of doing it next week without DH that got me down. He was so great all day today.
My 8month pg SIL is staying with me and she's the sweetest thing-she hugged me tight and kept saying "I'll be here for you" while I was sobbing my heart out. I was so exhausted!

Your DH sounds really sweet myturn!

That was a surreal feeling... it was like no time had passed at all.

Im sorry your have to wait until next week when your DH is away, I am glad you have someone with you. Good luck for next Tuesday... Oh I forgot to say in my earlier post make sure you wear a nice loose dress... so you are comfortable on the way home.

P.S - How hot did you feel in the gown and those crazy socks! lol I think the hair net tops the look off lol.

Oh zig, what a pain after you got yourself mentally as well as physically prepared.

Good on you for still doing it next week, it'll be hard without your DH there as you say but I'm so glad your lovely SIL can be your support person.

You can do this! Good luck for next week and make sure you update.

just know, that it will be okay and you'll get your results and you will be fine xxx
