We were TTC before I went on anti-depressants and after googling and finding that Zoloft can cause birth defects we decided not to.
That said, I asked my GP if I could change to something else today and he said that Zoloft is conception friendly. So now i'm confused.
He's a very good GP (something I've not had before) and I don't want to be sceptical of his advice, but I can't help it. Regardless of the fact that I know ten years ago when internet couldn't have told me otherwise I wouldn't have worried.
So, what should I do? Have you conceived on Zoloft and is baby ok?
I'm sorry, I cant help from the female point, but i conceived my first 3 children on the first try, and then meet my new partner. He was on zoloft. We didn't concieve till 6 months after going off the medication. Since then we have fallen pregnant twice, both on the first go again. I do beleive the medication had a lot to do with it.
I know its off topic, but thought I'd tell you our experience....
I conceived on Zoloft and continued to take it throughout my pregnancy. I had a wonderful healthy pregnancy and now a gorgeous baby girl who is perfectly healthy, growing more beautiful and cheekier every day!. Some people may judge me for taking the "risk" by staying on the meds but I looked into it very carefully before making the decision. I consulted my GP, Obs, rang the phone line at Royal North Shore (forget the name of the line but it advises on drugs during pregnancy) and also went to a clinic at my local hospital specialising in women who have to take meds during pregnancy (I'm guessing they also see a lot of women with chronic conditions like diabetes, epilepsy etc). All advised that Zoloft is safe to take in pregnancy and conception because research so far has not shown any birth defects etc in babies born of women taking the drugs - HOWEVER - they are careful to warn that research is limited in this area to date. There is a chance of a baby developing a withdrawal syndrome at birth which is temporary. ALL emphasised that the most important thing for a baby is a well mother.
I'd say be careful with info you find on the web...talk to professionals who are aware of the most current research and balance your decision with this information and your own current needs.
Thanks PurpleMamma and Sophia, great to hear some feedback.
I'm still exclusively demand BFing our DS and AF is quite irregular even though she came back at 5 weeks (OMG unlucky me!) but I expect this may change when we eventually introduce solids. Even still I imagine it may take some time if we do decide to keep "trying".
Might wait until my next appoitnment and have a chat then.
I am with Sophia on the importance of mother being well as well as bubs. However, I was on Aropax when we conceived and the GP and pysch moved me to Zoloft in order to 'withdraw' from the Aropax and then withdraw off the Zoloft as it was easier to stop than Aropax. Then I went off the Zoloft in pregnancy as it wasn't recommended that I continue it. They give it a class in the MIMs book (medical guide to medications) which was not to be taken as risks unknown (something like that). Well worth discussing it with a few professionals!
hi, i take zoloft 50mg for PND. I consulted a dr (my drs locum) about ttc while still on it. We discussed the pros and cons and came to the conclusion that a happy and sane mum is worth the small risk that may be associated with taking it while pregnant. She said the biggest risk was a withdrawal effect after the baby was born. But i figure that a small amount goes through the breastmilk so the baby would be getting it no matter, since i would be going on it straight after the baby is born anyhow.
My best friend concievd while on Zoloft and is currently pg with number 6! She tends to go off it towards the end of her pg and goes quietly crazy however!
Good luck with TTC no. 2!
