TTC but not sure where to start!

You'd think that having been a member since 2008 that I would know exactly what I'm doing now that I'm FINALLY TTC.

    Nope

From going off the pill in February to getting AF it was 6 weeks, and I'm waiting for her to come again. It started on the 7th April, so does that put me at cycle day 17? Or do I start it from when AF finished?

Let's pretend I had a 28 day cycle, would I have already O'd (assuming I even did)? What cycle day does that usually happen?

I am going to start charting and temping once I get AF again, but may need some help with that too!

    Any hints/tips/advice for me?

    Amy x

I have no idea about all this stuff, but I just wanted to say I'm so excited for you!

Good luck - I hope your TTC journey is a short one .

I started counting the day AF arrived (not the spotting days if you have those, first day of needing a pad). I have a 28 day cycle so I presumed for me that O was days 12-14, and we DTD every second day. I've never charted or temped so can't help you there. I started taking Elevit as soon as we knew we were TTC, but that's the only supplement either of us took. Good luck!

Good luck TTCing. I hope it's short for you.

CD1 is the first day of AF, so you would be CD17. Ovulation can occur at any time, depending on the woman. The average is considered to be CD14, with a luteal phase of 14 days. In my case, O can be between CD12-17 with a 10-12 LP.

I recommend you joining Fertility Friend and doing the charting course. Alternatively, Francesca Naish has a great book on fertility. It explains charting as well as ways to optimise your health for fertility. Some basic things you can do now is learn about different types of cervical mucus (CM) and when yours changes. If you haven't already, buy a good digital basal body temperature thermometer which measures to 2 decimal places.

I also recommend getting some basic pre-conception blood tests done. These check your iron, Vitamin d and other levels as well as looking at your rubella vax status. Also check your exposure to CMV and parvo virus. If you want to be extra vigilant, you can get tested for thrombophilia or other conditions that can cause miscarriages or problems conceiving. Also organise health insurance, if you want to go private. A pre-conception meeting with a good OB or IM can be invaluable.

Let's pretend I had a 28 day cycle, would I have already O'd (assuming I even did)? What cycle day does that usually happen? On a 28 day cycle O would be about day 14 but varies for everyone of course.

I am going to start charting and temping once I get AF again, but may need some help with that too! I would recommend starting tomorrow. Even if it's just for practice & to get into the swing of it.

Any hints/tips/advice for me? Good luck! I hope you get your BFP very soon If it does take a few months, I would get checked out sooner rather than later because BFNs are just depressing even for just a few months. Are you taking folic acid? I took Blackmores conceive well & got DH to take Menevit. Once pg, I switched to Blackmores pg & bf vitamins.

    Thanks everyone!

I've signed up to fertility friend - just need to work it all out and buy a thermometer.

Will order some pre-preg vitamins as well. My iron levels are normally quite low - so a check up and a blood test is probably a good idea.

Yep, get onto fertility friend and do the charting course thing. Even if you don't chart. Then you will know how it all works and how to look out for your fertile signs, etc.

Basically, the first day of AF is CD1. And usually it's 14 days from O until the next AF. So if you have a 28 day cycle, you should ovulate in the middle

Good luck! So excited for you!

I'm so excited for you hun... Where are you located? I bought a basal body thermometer a day or so before my BFP because I was convinced I wasn't might be able to sling it your way??

Aimz - i've got pink pad for the iPhone. At the moment all I'm charting is my cycle & moods. But it does give you the option for basal temps etc. I also keep an eye on my mucus, and listen to my body. I know when I'm coming up to ovulation because I start to climb the walls.

I'm currently on elevit multis and watching what I eat & exercising (yes I'm also getting fit for my volcano hike).

    Good luck with it all

Great suggestions above, so I won't repeat them.

I just wanted to add, if you haven't already done it, see your GP and ask for your immunity for any relevant diseases to be checked, especially rubella. I had half a dozen diseases checked and she also did baseline testing of other things.

    Good luck!
