Hi Cindy - I think just tell your GP what you've told us - that you're trying to conceive but that you have irregular periods and want to know what you can do about making them regular and at what point you should see a specialist.

The fact that you've been trying for four months isn't really a concern in itself (because it's not that long even though it may seem it), it's just easier to TTC if you're regular because then you have more of an idea at what point in your cycle you're ovulating and thus when you're most fertile.

Just see a GP & say what you've said here. Don't be surprised though if he/she doesn't want to do anything yet. Many GPs will want you to wait 12 months before doing any investigations. It is perfectly normal for you to take up to 12 months to conceive a baby.

Hi Cindy - I would ask for a referal to a gyno - to sort out your irregular period - TTC can be very frustrating when you have a regular cycle - so harder still for you. The gyno can see if and when you ovulate etc. there would be nothing worse than to "try" for 12 months if there is a problem you could have seen to 8 months previously. If all is well it will at least set your mind at ease. We asked very "firmly" after 6 months and discovered some issues - i would hate to have waited 6 months more before doing anything.

    Goodluck on your journey!

I also say go see a GYN or FS if you have irregular periods. I had irregular periods for years and it turned out I hardly ever ovulated. A GP is not a specialist and is limited in what they can do.

    Hiya!

Based on my own personal experience with severe fertility/endo/irregular painful periods etc, and having been down the conventional medical path first, I would strongly reccommend a qualified, registered natural therapist (ie- Naturopath), as they are trained to use various non-invasive methods of analysis to get to the root of the problem (rather than just treating the symptoms) and use natural remedies which do not have the same side-effects as allopathic drugs.
If you are interested, you can contact ANTA (Australian Natural Therapists Association) to get the details of registered experienced natural therapists (ie- a Naturopath) who are working near your area.
I attribute finally seeking a Naturopath (after years of consulting GPs, Gynocologists and Gastroenterologists etc) to the unassisted conception of my healthy baby boy. Were it not for Natural Medicine I don't think I would have able to conceive naturally and I certainly don't believe I would have been able to find lasting relief from my repoductive health issues which are no longer present.
Of course, this is my experience and I do not intend to undermine other people's choices for treatment.

    Best of luck.
