Breast feeding can interfere with fertility so that could well be the cause. You will probably find that you will fall pregnant very soon now that you are not doing it anymore good luck.
Okay so it's only our 5th month of TTC#2 but I'm seriously getting more and more depressed each month. I've only stopped BF my 1 year old in the last couple of days but af was back on the scene straight away so I know I've been ovulating for the last year. Even though I've been having regular af, could the BF have hindered our chances of becoming pregnant?

I agree, BFing can affect you falling pregnant. I never fell while BFing (BF DS for 2 years, AF returned at 9 months post birth). Sometimes it just takes a while to fall, for no reason at all. Keep trying, I hope it happens for you soon. If you aren' t already, maybe some close charting might make the difference. Temping and/or using OPKs to pinpoint O and make sure your LP (luteal phase, time between O and AF) is more than 10 days long. It's frustrating work TTC!!
It can take a while for things to return to normal after breastfeeding. It depends on how sensitive you are to the hormones. For some women, BF doesn't make such a difference because they are not that sensitive and can fall pregnant while still feeding. We are all different.
My AF only returned when DS was down to 2 feeds a day. We slowly weaned completely - it was a mutual decision, DS didn't mind because he didn't ask for it anymore and it was one less complication for me while TTC because I seem to be pretty sensitive to the hormones stopping AF.
Four months after weaning completely - I am UTD!
Good luck.
