I.JUST.BOUGHT.A.THERMIE.....
I have lusted after them for a long time, but have never been brave enough to spend the money. DH told me to have a demo so he could see it in action, and was impressed, so we bit the bullet. Eeeeeeekkk! I'm so excited! How am I going to wait a week or so until it gets here?!
CONGRATULATIONS!! It's so exciting get a thermomix. I am in love with mine. Last night I made mushroom dumplings to go in my chicken soup.
@Rainbow Mumma - There is nothing that will disappoint you about the TMX, it's great for all levels of cooking, my group leader went from being a self proclaimed jar cook to being a gourmet home cook with hers. She makes everything from scratch now and is so happy with the difference it makes to her an her family. For me I am a foodie, have always loved cooking etc, but when I had my DD and started my business a few years back I found i didn't have the time to cook, I love my thermie, it's like an extra pair of hands and I can cook nutritious food quickly and easily, but I can also cook food that I would have never attempted before just because it is so sophisticated. I am so glad I have it for my next child as preparing baby food in the TMX is going to be such a breeze, it will do all the work for me. There is so much support for the TMX out there - loads of websites and facebook pages. I also find I save $$ as there is much less waste in my family. Also with the recipe index website there is an abundance of recipes you can search by ingredients you have. I can also make delicious curries and pizzas from scratch with little effort and I know what's going into it (i.e. organic veggies and meat) as opposed to take aways. It was the best $2k I ever spent and since I became a consultant as I believe in it so much... Here is a link to an article in Sunday's paper.
Daily Telegraph article
Do you have a consultant that can do a demo? I highly recommend seeing it in action!
ive got the kids and toddler book....
its very similar to an annabel karmel type book....
its got some great recipes in it, DD loves the apricot balls and the vegie sauce!
MrsF: have very exciting!!!
Too many, too many. Yay for your hubby finally getting with the program! hehe
I haven't used mine other than to cook pasta or rice in weeks. Clearly I suck at this just like a lot of other things
You do not suck at it. It just takes time to get used to it, if you aren't interested in making stuff like custards, smoothies, breads, sorbets etc.
You could try one new thing a week, replace something that you normally buy in a packet or something like that - and make it in the thermomix instead. Google for recipes or ask in here! I don't use mine every day (although DH does for his protein stuff) but to have it there when I need it is great :) Like when my mum came over and was doing some cooking with the kids, and ran out of icing sugar half way through a recipe - I had some sugar in my pantry that I turned into icing sugar for her in the thermomix. Handy! Couldn't do that without it :) Just takes practice to get over the fear of using it I think, I haven't converted all my regular recipes into being able to be cooked in it, mainly because I'm still a little bit intimidated by mine and I've had it for 2 years LOL
Ok. BD... This is where we can help. What does your family eat? What sort of things do you want to use it for? Don't be disheartened! I've gone through periods where I don't use it much too. Certainly not a failure! Let us help you!!!!
We mostly eat chicken tonight's and tuna bakes and spaghetti sort of things. I get home really late and it's so hard.
I've made the zucchini slice choc chip cookies bread scrolls Anzac biscuits risotto.
It's more a lazy thing I think where we don't write down all the ingredients that we need before we go shopping. We pretty much eat the same thing EVERY week on different days lol
I haven't even used my Veroma yet :(
BD i often only use mine for basic things like rice, porridge etc....
dont feel bad about it!
Start making a stockpile list and slowly tick things off as you go. So basics for the cupboard, spices, sauces, things for the freezer, sugars, flours etc. My pantry is its own mini market and its a TINY pantry. I do have a stand alone freezer. But with all the bases covered eventually all you will need is fresh fruit/veg and meat each week. As Arimeh says add one new recipe to a grocery list. And then slowly work up. I was doing from scratch before I had a TMX but getting your head around from scratch cooking and the TMX is overwhelming I'm sure. It takes time. I didn't suddenly wake up one day and go "from scratch for me!" It happened over time from when I first had DD till now. That's 11 years!!! Before that I was a packet girl too!but I can tell you now we spend a heck of a lot less on food now than we did back then. For absolute certain! So start one recipe at a time and before you know it you'll have a whole list of recipes ready to go at any given moment!
Thanks Girls
Felt like such a waste of money for the amount I use it. Sucks being a ft working mum
The feedback is useful though BD - I don't have one but contemplating and do wonder whether I would take to it or not. I am working FT lots of weeks at the moment and although it does do alot of things it doesn't magic time (although does things quicker it seems) it is the planning and shopping I suck at. I have also promised that if I don't use sufficiently I will sell it so that should keep me motivated I hope.
BD i work full time as well and honestly once you get the hang of things you will wonder how you survived without your thermo.
tonight for example im out so its DH and DD to fend for themselves, but instead of getting take away coz DH can not cook to save himself, ill whip up a quiche.
I make my short crust pastry in thermo in about 90 second, then bake for 10-15....
in the mean time i chop up 200g cheese in thermo, chop up 200g bacon, i had chop 5 spring onions and chuck them in and then add 3 eggs, 200ml light cream, mix it together and by then the pastry is done, put the mix in and bake for 20 mins and their dinner is done. the quiche Lorraine recipe is in the EDC.
thats just one example of how quick i can make a dinner....
meatballs are really quick to make too....
let me know if you would like a recipe
risotto is a big fave for me, 20 mins and dinner is done and i dont have to stand there
Any recipes would be greatly appreciated. My friend just got one too and she got the new EDC and its wayyyy better than the one I got
Google steph berg her mac and cheese is awesome.
Will think of others.
I love mac n cheese Rouge, I am going to google that too!
Tonight, we are having the beef stroganoff.
Personally I reckon it would be great if you work full time, so long as you get your grocery shopping organised then it does all the work for you when you get home. My suggestion would be sit down with your EDC or the My Recipe Community or your favourite TMX website and just do some menu planning.... I wasn't using it as much as I should and then I just made a big commitment to get in there and get my monies worth and have never looked back.

will pop up a few tomorrow when im "working":lol::lol::lol::lol:
I just made the old school stove top Cadbury chocolate cake. Was my granny's fave. I think it's on the side of the box. So much easier in the Thermomix. Baking now. Will make some ganache to fill and top.
Making chicken and mushroom risotto tonight. For dinner.
OceanPrincess - what bread do you make as everyday bread? And what tin do you use?
Today I did all the kids sweet lunchbox treats tomorrow ill do savory on the weekend ill do dips and after school snacks.
Saving a fortune atm as me and ds2 are dairy free so making all our treats and snacks means no need to buy special dietary versions
Oh man, you guys are making me sooooo hungry!!!!
I am lucky I made some pea and ham soup in my slow cooker and some bread in the bread maker today, other wise, I would be starving....but I can't wait until I can do it all in my thermie!
Hi girls - TMX wannabe owner here - thanks to those who replied to my recent post!!
Just wondering for those who make bread with it - how do you make it? Eg for a wholemeal loaf, what ingredients and how long does it take? We love the Helgas / Lawsons type bread (grain or wholemeal) and its so expensive! So I'm thinking bread savings is another angle I can use on DH. But I'm lazy so I'm hoping its easy to make?
Making bread is ridiculously easy - usually its just chucking everything in, mixing it for like 6 seconds or something, and then you knead it on its kneading function for a minute or two. You can put whatever you want in it. Then chuck it in the oven!
So Arimeh when you say ingredients do you mean flour etc or can you do it from grains that get ground down in the TMX?
Either. Buy the grains and grind them beforehand or buy flour.
I had my demo on Tuesday and she made wholemeal flour out of wheat, and then made the bread with it and added the other ingredients. It took about 8 minutes or something ridiculous like that from grinding the wheat to leaving the dough to rise. After it had doubled in size, she then made it into rolls, popped it into a cold oven (it rises some more while the oven warms to cook it. And hey presto about 12 to 15 mins later we were eating hot bread rolls. Seriously. LOL.
I'm really into bread making. I'll pop back later - on my way out to dinner now.
Suffice to say on Tuesday dd didn't have anything for lunch and I got up at 7am, had her at kinder by 8.30am with boys also dressed, everyone had breakfast AND I made her some cheesymite scrolls :)
I haven't need to the bakery in three weeks.
Subbing to this thread, I really need to use my Thermie alot more than I do. Well I do use it most days but for very basic things like chopping, grating, rice cooking and at the moment baby food but I really need to start using it to its potential.
OP - I'd be interested to hear how you do your bread, I've done the EDC recipe and variations which turn out OK but nothing I really love. I keep meaning to try the one minute bread recipe on the super kitchen machine blog but I just haven't been that organised to set it going because it needs 12 hours proving.

I wish you people would stop commenting and making this thread pop up, I'm so jealous!!!! LOL. I want one!! For now I will keep stalking you all and imagining all the awesome things I can make when I finally get it.
I'm interested in the bread too - my attempt wasn't great? Where do you get the whole grains from? I just used wholemeal flour & guessed the quantities, but my sister said it's best if you do it exactly as per the recipe. She makes the spelt bread though & I'd like to just make the normal stuff.
I have been getting into 'cleaner' recipes lately and making smoothies (green or otherwise) at least 3 mornings a week. My fave is oats and/or quinoa flakes ground down first, then almond milk, banana & frozen blueberries, spinach leaves, maple syrup +/- natural yoghurt. It's awesome.
I've made peanut, almond & cashew butters (when I make peanut butter I don't add oil like the EDC says - it's plenty oily without any added).
We've been getting into these cookies with tinned chickpeas, peanut butter, honey (and/or rice syrup or agave), a smidge of baking powder and a handful of chocolate chips. I also add sunflower seeds & pipitas. Bake for a few minutes to firm up the edges. They are sooooo tasty.
Snacks they sound awesome, those little cookie bites! Where is the recipe? I'm not too good at fudging recipes... Yet!
Ok so while my bread rolls are baking and my soup is cooking (thanks TMX) and the kids are quiet, I'll talk bread.
I've made a few different recipes from the EDC and one from the recipe community. The one I have been liking best and playing around with is the basic bread recipe in the EDC. It calls for 100g wheat grain, which you mill down, then I think 400g baker's flour. I've tried out a few different grains as I didn't have wheat - white and black chia, linseed. I use a basic loaf tin to cook it in and they've turned out beautifully. Smell delicious cooking and taste really nice. Yes they are heavier than the standard loaf from the bakery but I think that's ok when I consider what I'm putting in.
Also have made the buttermilk bread from EDC, which was lighter and fluffier (I didn't mill any grains) but had a really crusty crust. Like too crusty for our liking!
Things I've picked up:
- You can't just do away with bought flour all together. If you milled 500g wheat grain and made it into bread, the bread you ended up with will be really dense and heavy. From what I've read, about one third milled grains to two thirds baker's flour seems to be the best ratio.
- my kids don't yet like the bread the day after. Fresh they seem to think its ok, but when I slice it and freeze it and offer it the next day, they turn their noses up. They are a bit perplexed by the colour too - probably because I've been buying plain white loaves from Baker's Delight. But I am determined to persist. We used to spend $10-20 a week at the bakery so this is one of the biggest areas of savings I can foresee for us.
The rolls I do are on the recipe community - "Bestest bread rolls ever". Quickest that I've seen and really tasty.
Ok quick question. What tin do you use?
When I do bread I use the same tin that I use when I do banana bread.
So far today dh has boiled up some eggs for him for the next few days, he's made a fruit smoothie, I've made fat reduced hommus and there was something else I was going to make but now can't remember.
Stupid pregnancy brain.
Eta - chocolate Chia pudding! That's what it was.
Thanks OP. Where would I find whole grains? Do you have to go to a specialty store or have I missed it at the stupidmarket??
I tried mine with baker's flour too (and I hear that's really important) but it turned out REALLY dense... but if that's normal then I might just persist and have a few more tries.
Re the recipe, it was a random one on FB from someone's recipe blog that I thermomix-ised myself. I'm pretty sure I know it off by heart now, lol!
1 can chickpeas, drained & dried
165g peanut (or other nut) butter
80g honey (i do half-half with rice malt syrup because I'm trying to eat less sugar)
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
90g choc chips (I do half-half with seeds: sunflower & pipitas) - I use 72% cocoa chocolate. Buy fair trade :)
Blend it up without chocolate first, then a quick mix with chocolate.
My honey is raw (a gift from a bee-keeper patient!) & has gone firm & crystalised. I warmed it up to measure it properly and this made the chocolate a little bit melty, so it seeped into the bisuit a bit... WHICH WAS AWESOME. A happy mistake. So I recommend it :)
Bake for just a few minutes - about 10 - in a moderate oven.
They stay very raw, cookie-dough ish. They are much better just out of the oven but still taste good when cool.
Thanks for that OP - I do the EDC but with 500gms bakers flour & a teaspoon of bread improver and find it gives me a fluffier texture. I also add sunflower & pumpkin seeds but also find the next day it's really not that appealing :).
Well today I must say Thermie has had its biggest workout in a while. Baby rusks done & baked, Banana Bread (from toddler book) in the oven & smelling divine, pizza dough rising and now to just cook up some tomato pizza base ready for dinner tonight.
