    Doctor prescribed me duromine.....

I am currently 79kg - I am 176cm tall and my BMI is well within the healthy range. I went to the doctor a few weeks ago and had the annual blood tests - my colesterol, etc are all excellent - I mentioned that I would like to lose weight but it doesn't want to come off for me so she offered a script for duromine.

I didn't even know what it was, she listed off some of the side effects which are nothing compared to what you read online....
I took the script telling her I intended looking into it further.

Thing is, everything I read says it's for people who are seriously obese which doesn't describe me at all.

Do you think this is irresponsible practice?

I think where she was coming from was the kick start to weight loss to give me motiviation, but still not sure.......

Oh wow! I wouldn't have thought somebody like you who is well within the healthy weight range would ever get prescribed that!

It has some nasty side effects so i would be reluctant to take it.

Surely she could have suggested something better..?

Bloody hell! I would have thought it would be hard enough for legitimately obese people to get it!!

    Ausgirl,

I had my doctor did the same thing, I was also in healthy weight range at 59kg at 165cm and it was also while I was doing high end cardio training. TBH all it did for me was make me feel "high" I couldnt sit still for 3 days, no sleep for the same period, and only lost a little weight because I had no interest in, and forgot to eat. My body then normalised it and it didnt do anything. at all. I dont feel that its worth it at all. All I got out of it was 3 days without sleep

Reductil on the other hand, it worked a treat. But, it got banned in Australia a couple of years ago because it tends to increase the risk of heart attack in obese patients.....

So in short I treated my body pretty badly when I was younger to try and achieve a shape that wasnt possible on my build.

OMG, Caz, duromine for 59kg/165cm tall???? That is absolutely ridiculous! At that height/weight, you're perfectly normal and actually quite slimly built!

ausgirl, I do think it is irresponsible of the doctor, definitely. Your height and weight are normal. My only advice for you would be, do not take duromine!!!! I have never taken it, mostly because I have had 3 friends who have used it and the side effects are horrific. So not worth losing weight for. And it is addictive I believe.
Maybe your best bet would be going to a naturopath or nutritionist/dietitian. Did you have your hormone levels checked too? Maybe your weight isn't coming off because of some sort of hormone issue.
Good luck hun. I know what the battle with weight is like, and it sucks!

Its an awful drug. Please don't use it!!

My best friend a few years ago went into a psychosis using it. It ruined her marriage and all her friendships. I haven't heard from her in over 4 years!

I was using it at the same time and I didn't sleep for days on end.

I've used speed in my youth and I found it had less side effects on me than duro (clearly not implying speed is acceptable for anyone to use just mentioning my experience)

Its been banned in some countries and I wish Australia would follow suit. Doctors hand it out like candy sometimes!

Please don't use it. I work with people suffering drug addictions. I have a client with a serious drug proble, this drug being one of the problems. He too suffered from psychosis

Don't use it, it;s no good. SIL uses it and so does a co-worker and it just wrecks your body and makes you not eat.
Um, can I ask at that weight with hight, why do you want to loose weight??

I too was prescribed Duromine, 5 months after the birth of my DD-2010. I took the script, but never filled it.
Because of the changes that my body had undertaken during TTC, preg, birth and post-birth, I was diagnosed as 'obese' medically. I am 168cm tall, and was 78kg at the time, if anything I was unfit and 'untoned'. After that experience I dropped down to 60kg in 5 weeks, I really thought that others must've know that I was 'obese' too, and how could I live with that?! How disgusting was I?! The people around me worried, i'd become 'too' skinny.
Having the script handed to me brought back all my body issues that I *thought* I had conquered during late adolesence, but hadn't.

Today, after a second baby (DS-2011), I struggle more with my own identitiy and seld-appreciation more than I ever have.

If you need to lose weight, lose it on your own, for your own reasons.

Im not sure if this was for me or Ausgirl.....

But I did it for competitive reasons.... I was doing long distance runs and still had what I considered "jigly bits" around my hips and bum. 5kg slows you down enough to count. I could not for the life of me, shift that weight. I had the said "perfect" diet for competition and even with running over 70km a week, that weight was still hanging in there I ended up giving up competition running because I simply couldnt get my body where I needed it. At the time I left competitive running (12 months after trying duromine) I was 56.5 kg and my body was stuggling (periods became very sparse)

I'm happy where I am now. My body has come back to "what it wants to be" which is 67kg, 8kg up from the place where I thought I could lose 5 more kg. I see now what I was doing to myself, but couldnt then, my eyes were on the prize, not looking at what was best for my body. It took alot for me to realise that my body just wasnt, and could not be the build I wanted.

    Re: Doctor prescribed me duromine.....

Sorry to revive an old thread! I have just been prescribed, I'm 71kg and 168cm tall. I started weight watchers two weeks ago and have lost 2kg, so I don't think I need it, and I didn't ask for it (I was at the docs for a kidney infection). I was thinking of using it when I plateau (I always do) but that looks like a bad idea! He also prescribed 30mg, I would have thought starting at a lower dose is normal? Anyway, I'm already moody and have trouble sleeping, so I think I'll just keep going with what I'm doing, it's just tempting because I've been given the sample.

If anyone is on it and it's going well, or badly, more stories would be good. I've had a look through even older threads but it seems like the active ingredient has changed.
