I see making the bed as something quite different from putting away dishes or clothes, or cleaning/straightening up other areas ...
I suspect this is because to actually use the bed, I have to undo the making of it! Wheres to stack the dishwasher it needs to have been unstacked, to use the bench, it needs to be clear of dishes and clean, to use areas in my house, it needs to not have Mt Foldmore skulking around, to use my desk it needs to not have a pile of filing sitting there, etc.
But the bed? It doesn't get used for anything other than the obvious, we don't hang out in the bedroom for anything else, and it's not visible to passers by ... so there's no incentive for me personally for it to be getting its pretty on. I benefit from how it feels, and because I roll around so much, a nice tightly tucked sheet isn't a big bonus.
Whereas with other areas, it's nice to see them clean and sparkly and tidy, or to be able to have full use of them because there's not other things cluttering up the way.
