We don't use flat sheets here either. My mum never used them, and I just find them a massive pain to make them up with the bed, so I've never bothered. Plus, when I go away and stay at hotels, having a top sheet makes it feel more special cause I'm not used to them, lol.
I use flat top sheets all the time. I can't sleep properly without one. DH and I don't toss and turn much though. The flat top sheet is for absorbing body fluids such as sweat and drool (ewww). Top sheets also stop cold draughts coming in and under the doona when you roll over. If we didn't use a top sheet i would have to wash the doona cover weekly which would be too time consuming and as we use king sized linen the constant wear from all that washing would mean more frequent replacements.... and king sized doona covers are expensive!!!
In summer i always sleep with a top sheet on to stop mosquitos biting me and to give me a sense of security... i can't sleep without anything ontop of me no matter how hot the night.
I often use flat bottom sheets too. I know how to do hospital corners and they never come untucked. I really dislike hanging fitted sheets on the clothes line... they never seem to sit as nicely as a flat sheet. I remember a time when there was no such thing as fitted sheets... they came to our country neighbourhood in about the early 80s. My role model Nana "tsk tsked" saying that a fitted sheet would never look as neat as a flat... i think i was indoctrinated at that point LOL We have some but they are not my favourites.
Yes, my fetish for hanging clothes nicely comes to the fore again! It's not just on the line though... i admire longevity in my domestic items... and fitted sheets just don't last as long as flats. Either the elastic goes or the fabric seems to wear out faster, even with the 1000 count ones. Not trying to convert anyone though LOL I'm just old fashioned.
ETA: I wash the doona covers twice a season. I have winter weight, summer weight and mid-season weight doona covers for each bed. So each bed has at least 3 changes of doona cover per year. I guess each doona is washed about 4 - 6 times per year and that's enough wear and tear and time for me.

I love a top sheet but DH is a nightmare with them so I've given up.
I change the doona cover fortnightly but we have heaps.
Bath I have figured out a way to hang the fitteds neatly and squarely on the line.....they fold beautifully afterwards too![]()
LOL surely the elasticised sides still sag....
It never occured to me that people wouldn't use the top sheet until Mum had friends visit that didn't.
This may be a rude question, but how often do you non top sheet users wash your doona covers? When Mum has those aforementioned friends visiting she always washes the doona cover (and the top sheet that they sleep on)
Probably once every 3 weeks, sometimes 4 LOL. I must sound like a grub but we have showers during the night so dont know how dirty the doona covers can get.
Although i must admit, i only have dark colours for linen. What you cant see wont hurt right? LOL
Plus my BO smells like rose petals anyway LOL
We only use it in Summer if its super hot. Otherwise, doesn't get used.![]()
We always have the top sheet on here. But if you're looking for somewhere to offload yours, try an animal shelter or vet hospital. I know our local ones really appreciate old towels and sheets!
