what would you do? mistake in sellers listing

    Hey guys,

I won an item on ebay for $16.99 which said $3.50 postage up the top where you place your bid, but in the title and all over the add is says ***FREE POSTAGE*** in big letters.

I go to pay and it comes up with $3.50 postage, so rather than just pay the $16.99 i sent them a message saying it wanted postage in the invoice but the add says free postage. I get this reply:

    Hi,

Frankly speaking there was a mistake with the listing. The free postage offer has ended last month and when I noticed the mistake I couldn?t change it anymore due to having bidders. What is your suggestion?

    Many thanks
    Mohamad
Personally if i was the seller i would have admitted my mistake and just not charged postage, but thats just me.

Would you just tell them tough luck, it's not my problem (and risk them unfairly leaving bad feedback?), or would you just pay the $3.50?

I would be inclined to tell them too bad, it stated free postage and it's not your problem if they didn't change it in time. I'm sure that if you disputed with Ebay it would go in your favour, but because it's only $3.50 it doens't seem worth it. Maybe you could ask to split the postage and only pay $1.75?

I was going to suggest splitting the postage as well so that neither of you feel bad over the sale.

Yeah...I think they have a responsibility to still give you free postage...as that is what was stated.

I was selling something last week and I had written that it was the latest edition (I thought it was)...the person who made the highest bid told me it was no longer the latest edition and requested that she retract her bid...

I felt that I had to let her do that, as my listing was wrong...my fault! But as a result, the item never sold....bummer!

Anyway...no big deal! Maybe splitting it would be a good idea...it's certainly an act of goodwill on your behalf!

I think that since he's asked for your suggestion you should suggest splitting the postage.

Yeah I think splitting the postage sounds fair too.

You know what though, he could have amended the listing... The title maybe not once there were bids but you can add notes to the listing & he could have added a note that appears at the bottom with the date saying "mistake in heading, postage is $3.50". Maybe let him know that too, for future refernce

Gee how wrong. Spiltting sounds fair..but he should have looked over the listing before submitting it.

Its his fault so you should be getting free postage.

    Hi Yael

As an ebay seller, he is right. Once there are bidders, you can't make changes to the listing but in saying that, he should do the right thing and give you the free postage. You can lodge a complaint with ebay or you could email him back and say that the only reason you bought it from him as opposed to another seller was because of the free postage.
