A few months ago I was diagnosed with PCO on u/s but I have never had any follow-up b/w or anything to diagnose actual PCOS. Since then I have had two pregnancies which have resulted in two losses. I have an appointment to see a specialist at RWH Randwick in Sydney in February, but I need a referral. I am wondering if there are any ladies in the Sydney are who can recommend a doctor who is sympathetic to this condition? I have been told alternatively that:
1. Despite having PCO and FBD (fibrocystic breast disease) I don't have a hormone problem or fertility issue
2. By an OB that PCO will not affect fertility, I recommend a lap to see if your tubes are blocked, let's make an appointment!
3. PCO is an infertility issue and I recommend you get insurance for IVF
So I have no luck with GPs. Yesterday I saw one for this second loss who told me two m/c's were "nothing"
So if anyone can recommend a GP for a referral I would greatly appreciate it. Or if anyone has a great specialist and wants to recommend them as well, also much appreciated.
Hi Scarlet.. I used to live in Sydney, and I had a fantastic GP in Dudley street Coogee. Her name was Lyn McKenzie.. she was just unreal... I don't know anyone at POW, however, I am sure someone out there would know of a good gynae that specialises in PCOS there.
Alot of girls that have PCOS don't require IVF, many fall with the help of the fertility drugs 'clomid' and 'metformin'.. I would recommend private health insurance, I am a nurse, who used to work in the public system, and believe you me, private health insurance from my experience both as a patient and staff member, is advisable. good luck

Hi Scarlet
Firstly I'd like to say how very sorry I am that you've suffered 2 m/c's. I can understand how you are feeling as I too have had 2 m/c's before being diagnosed with pcos.
Secondly I can't believe your dr is so heartless by saying that your m/c's are nothing. That has got my blood boiling and I want you to know that your angels are an important part of your life.
Thirdly I don't know of any drs in Sydney but I would recommend getting yourself private health insurance as you just never know when you might need it. I have had PHI for a while now and lucky for me that I chose one that covers me for IVF. When I organised my cover I had absolutely no idea that I had anything wrong with me fertility wise.
Most specialists will do tests to see what could be causing these problems you are having and depending on the results they may prescribe Clomid and /or metformin as Leis mentioned and these drugs may be all you need otherwise there are other options such as IUI or IVF.
I wish you all the best for you appointment and am sure you will have a precious little bub in your arms in the future.
