    Default Metaformin

Catlin, you asked why metaformin wasnt for me ... Well it gave me chronic diahrea, so badly that coughing and farting was totally out of the question.
I didnt even make two weeks on it ... But here is possibly where anyone can help .

Is it true that the side effects calm down after two weeks?
What are the benifits from metaformin?
Any hints on what to do about cyst pain ?

I would greatly appericate anyones advise on this
    Thanks heeps

    Hello,

I also had the TMI warning runs when I started and I got very moody, tired and didnt feel too good. After about three or four weeks I started feeling fantastic! It really did help me alot. I think it depends on what your symptoms of PCOS are, but my face started clearing up of pimples, and the hair on my face seemed to disappear also, well at least thin out. I also started ovulating and wah-la pregnant!!

I could not recommend Metformin enough to anyone with PCOS. I am totally sure it was the help from metformin that helped me sustain my pregnancy.

    I hope this helps you!

I don't know what your Dr may have suggested. But mine suggested I start off with one tablet (before bed) for x amount of time till any side effects stopped and then up each tablet over time. That way it wasn't as severe and was managable. I found I didn't get any effects from 1 (I take 850mg) and when I upped to 2 I only had 2 days of discomfort and it was usually after I had eaten so it wasn't too bad. I think everyone is different but give this way a go and see if it makes things easier. But I do recommend the metformin as it truly has been a lifesaver for me.

    Goodluck!

    Congradulation AW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Like yourself, I haven't posted in long time either. I'm so happy for you and . :happy4u:

If you do not mind me asking, how many miligrams of Metformin are you taking and for how long have you been taking it as well?

My hubby and I have been trying off and on for 5 1/2 years now. I took a break after my miscarriage in Feb., So now I'm back to charting and all that good stuff.

I just want to say congradulation again and that goes for anyone else that I may have missed.

Wow Aw, that is so great! you are a bit of an inspiration for me, cos i had been feeling like having pcos, meant that i wouldnever have a baby. Do you mind if i ask you some questions? How long did u take Metformin? is being overweight a factor in your pcos? did you have to take anything else, like Clomid?

    Wow thanks everyone!! :smt026

Ok, now to try and answer all the questions!! Cat, deeva, hope you don't mind that I have only written one post!

Cat, I felt alot like you have been for a while too. I am really lucky in that my hubby is a very positive person which balances me out as I can be over negative sometimes. The really bizarre thing is that this happened when we were least expecting it, so perhaps there is a lesson there for us next time to just relax and try not to plan and anticipate everything.

Just to give you a brief background, I came off the pill in July 03, and didn't get a period again. I went to my GP in November, and she said to lose weight and come back in 6 months, which I really wasn't happy about. I suggested PCOS, but she said it wasn't worth looking at just yet. My stepmother who is a nurse really got on my back to go to a doctor that specialised in women's health or fertility, which I did, and I am so glad that I did.

Since October last year, I have lost 15kgs (oh so slow!!). I acutally got on the scales and hit my frist goal of 15 the day before I found out I was pg (doh!). I actually think that the loss was due to coming off the pill than the metformin, though it definately helped I think. I have noticed a lot of things have been better since I have been off the pill - I don't think it is for me but thats just me.

In January I went to see a GP who actually works in a practice called 'Fertilitycare'. The first visit we talked alot about different drugs like clomid etc etc, and I decided with my DH that we just wanted to try diet and excercise first before getting on to anything to drastic. At that visit the doc put me on 10 days of progesterone lozenges and that gave me a period. We continued with that in conjunction with charting. Basically, I would chart, and once I thought I ovulated, I would start 10 days of prog 3 days after ovulation.

In February (2nd cycle of charting), I was put onto Metformin (500mg tablets 3 times a day) and have been on it since.

I had been doing that for 5 cycles with no luck, when doc decided for me to stop taking prog and just see how my body went. After discussion, we decided to not take prog for 3 months, keep on metformin, and try and lose maybe another 5 kgs, and if that still didnt work, I woudl start Clomid. The very first cycle after all this was decided, voila!! I truly think that it was just because we were relaxed and not 'trying' that it happened.

Im really lucky in that my doc monitors me really well, (though that means lots of needles!). I have progresterone levels checked every week, because apparently in PCOS women you don't make the same amount of progesteron as other women, which is why you dont menstruate as often, but also if can make it hard to sustain a baby because prog thickens the uterus lining and so if it is too thin, the fetus can't embed in there.

I am week 6 today, and last week started progrestone injections to top me up (poor DH has to give them to me - he hates doing it and doesnt beleive that it honesty doesnt hurt that much). Normally after 4 weeks of injections I can go back to prog lozenges.

The next big hurdle we have is an early pregnancy ultrasound (one of those yukky internal ones) to make sure baby has a heartbeat.

I am totally amazed that the heart is even there in such a little thing after such a short time!! Depeding on where the baby is they will be able to hear the heart hopefully week 6 or definately week 7, we have our fingers crossed that it is week 6 for us as we have made a pact not to tell anyone until we get that news!!

The next hurdle of course is getting to the magic 12 week mark, but I can't bear to think about that yet!!

    Love to everyone...

    AW

Thanks for the answers Aw. I don't think the Metformin is working for me. I did have regular AF after coming of da pill in June 2003, which was odd cos i have had PCOS since i was 16. Then all of a sudden, after 5 months of Metformin, AF stopped. I had to take Primolut to get a bleed in order to start Clomid this month. I have been thinking that my excess weight is the reason why i haven't fallen pg yet. Since October 2003, i have only lost about 5kgs. I feel (even tho i know its irrational) that not having a baby is my punishment for being overweight.

    Hey Cat

Don't ever allow yourself to think that way honey. 5 kgs over any amount of time is a fantastic effort!! =D> You should be really proud of your acheivement - we all are!!

Things happen for a reason, and whatever you are feeling now or then or whenever, always remember that there is ALWAYS something better around the corner.

Chin up love, feel free to msg me or whatever if you want to chat about anything.

    Thanks for the answer AW,
I asked my doctor should we increase the Metformin, and he said "no lets stay at 500mg one time a day." I know the Metformin is helping me to ovulate the only thing is that it comes on every other month just about.

    Congrats again!!!!!

Cat that's excellent!! Now you've got the hard part fixed you get to practice the fun part lots hehehe

Well sadly I jumped the gun in telling people, turns out the scan yesterday wasn't good news.

While we got the fertilisation and the implanting bit right, nothing happened from there because of really low levels of HCG and prog, so now I just have to sit back and let nature take its course and m/c. Kind of weird to know its coming and I just have to let it.

Anyways, I'm dealing with it a lot better now, 24 hours on. I don't think it was grief or mourning as much as just a huge shock that got me upset.

At least we ahve the basics there, just need to adjust the specifics a bit.

    Still a bugger though!!

Good luck with the wait Cat, my best wishes are with you!!

    Cheers all

    AW

    Aw,
I am really sorry to hear about that. I guess on the bright side, you know you can fall pg. Still tho, it must be really hard. My thoughts are with you.

Hello ladies, this is my first post in here, and first time in here. I've just read all your posts up until now, hopefully you will all have more success soon.

I too suffer with PCOS, but I am not overweight. I am not what they call a "classic" case. Its still frustrating though. I remember when I was in high school I would go for a couple of months without a period, then I would bleed for about 2-3 months. It was a nightmare!

So my story is a very long one, but to cut it short, I'm on IVF now and have been since October 2003, still no luck conceiving, however, my specialist has just put me on Metformin and just recently Dexamethasone, apparently these will help with conception, I have had a biochemical pregnancy two or three months ago, but again, it didn't last. so hopefully the metformin and dexamethasone will help.

so does anyone know on average how long you need to be on metformin before conception will take place? Or could anyone tell me how long it took them after taking metformin?

Im currently on three tablets a day - morning, noon and night.

Hi Bel, welcome to BB. I am not really sure what the time frame is, my ob gave me the impression that for some people it can be quite instant others may need a little extra help. I did find that my cycles started to regulate pretty much straight away, I went from 70 + cycles to 40 to 36 etc etc and my last was 34 I think so it keeps coming down which is great

I am currently on my first cycle of clomid so hopefully we will get an egg popping this month!

    Goodluck and keep us posted.

    *hugs*
