PCOS Support

hi my name is elizabeth and my dh and i have been ttc since july 2009 :cry:. i was diagnosed in 2000 at 15yo with pcos. i have only gotten my periods twice since going off the pill in july, once in sept 09 and right now (this week), i got so excited about getting them i think the girls at my work think i was a bit crazy :dance: for getting excited as had none of the usual signs that is was going to get them.

anyway i have our first fs apppointment is at the end of feb which hopefully we wont need :crossfingers: but if we do was wondering what to expect when we go and the sorts of treatments that people have been using. from reading the threads clomid and the fsh injections have been used the most. just wondering how expensive these are and what goes on.

also what is taking temp all about and how do you do it?

Welcome to belly belly! That's great that you got your period. I get excited too so your not alone there lol! For me it meant I was sort of working! :lol:
I have PCOS too, diagnosed in 2006 but I've had the symptoms since I was 14. I went on a low GI diet and took Metformin. That reduced my cycle from 3+ months to about 4 or 7 weeks. It took me 6 cycles (9 months) to conceive my DS. We are about to TTC again so I'm hoping that treatment will work again. Sorry I can't remember the cost. We also looked into IVF as we were told we wouldn't conceive naturally as my DH had a low sperm count.

I don't really know much about temping except that it helps to pinpoint ovulation. It would be best to ask the ladies in the TTC threads.

Hi my name is Jen. I was diagnosed with PCO, not the syndrome when I was 21. My periods were all over the place, wasn't trying to concieve at the time but was in alot of pain and could never understand why. I was refered to a Gyno who sent me for an ultrasound when they discovered the cysts.

I was told to control my weight, at the time I was carrying a little extra weight but not alot.. I got the weight under control and the periods went back to normal. I was also told that my chances of having children would be slim and be hard to fall.

My BF at the time and I split and I moved back home. After a few months of feeling and looking great with my new slim figure I met my now husband.
Before we were married we fell pregnant. We weren't trying, we also weren't using any protection as I told myself "you can't get pregnant".

Well 5 weeks later I was at the doctors and she was sending me for another ultrasound to check my ovaries as I had the same pain and was feeling tired and queezy. When she asked me if I was pregnant I said, no way!

So long story short, we have a beautiful healthy 3 year old boy. We have been trying for another baby since April last year with no success. For the past 5 months I have had 2 periods a month which was making it SO hard to work out when I was ovulating.
It didn't even occur to me until recently that it could be because of PCOS as everything has been so normal up until almost 12 months ago.

I have been very very stressed with the whole unable to fall pregnant thing, I have put on alot of weight since having our son.. I have lost a bit of weight recently but I am no where near where I was when I fell pregnant.

Because my periods are all over the place I have no idea what is normal and when they are due. My last period was 30th December 09. At the moment it is day 24. I have had cramps for over a week, felt sick thru the day from time to time, mild headaches, sore boobs every few days and I think yesterday and today I may be spotting.

So to you all out there having troubles falling, I completely sympathise with you.
It is a strain on your relationship, I have had 4 close friends who have had babies in the past 6 months and you smile but inside your heart is aching and your asking yourself, when's it my turn?

My husband laughed at me the other day because our cat has just had kittens and now our goldfish is pregnant.... all things are supposed to come in 3's so hopefully I'm next.

I'm hoping and praying so much that all these signs are pointing to baby..
I did a test today but I think it must be too early as it was negative, but its hard as I don't know when my period is overdue!

:hug: I know what you mean about everyone around being pg/having babies when TTC. Just makes you feel like crying sometimes. Have you tried temping? I'm not sure exactly how it works but a lot of the ladies in the TTC threads do it. I think your temp rises a bit when you O. Maybe you could join the TTC thread. The ladies here are very supportive and a lot of them are going through the same thing.

hi jenn,,my name is helen, im new here and i too have POCS since i was 16 and i was put on the pill, and that helped with my af's to come monthly, but when i was 23 i stopped taking the pill and i had dropped a few sizes, so they would come every three months, and then nothing for 3 mths,and then they disappeared :( . i went to an entocronologist and was put on metamorphin and again to loose weight, well i did do that and they only came once !!!
Ds and me are now ttc and i have gone to my gyno and done the d&c which reveilled that i had one tube blocked ;( but prior to that i got my af on 3 nov 09 , (after 5 mths), and i thought that i might have a chance at falling, so i did a ov test , which had showed up possitive and then we started b'ding and then i was very ill after 2wks, all the symptoms you could think of sore boobies, vomiting etc, but i wasnt prg ;(.
My gyno has straight away said to think of IVF, but i have done some research and i went to a herbal shop and they gave me nateral vitamins called menstro support, which has alot of ingredients that will help to regulate the period .e.g.vitex, i have been on it only for 3wks and 2 days, and i am starting to get pimples and cramping and back ache, so hopefully i am going to get them soon !! I am going to try anything i can to better my health and eventually a baby ! I have to step back and fix the prob, hopefully and then concentrate on making a baby, and i have put my dh on male fertility essentials, to help swimmers swim better, he hasnt tested, but we will see.
I know i have babbled on, but this herbal stuff has a few things that are linked to chinese medicine, so i thought its worth a try and i am still taking my grandma pills hehheh ( metamorphin ). so thanks for reading my long message and hopefully we all come back with the same news BABY !!!!! And i know the feeling about everyone is prg around you, our family friend have found out they are having their 2nd, and it is hard to feel happy, but what can you do, have faith , ok i ll stop now ehehhe.

My name is Skye my DH and I have been TTC for 18 mths i was diagnosed with PCOS 4 years ago and was placed onto the Pill to help to control it. I went off it so i could try and fall pregnant. My wonderful GP referred me to a fertility specialist in Melbourne. I met with him on Friday and he has put me onto 50mg of Clomid and Metformin (which will be a gradual process of 4 weeks, starting on only 50mgn then going up to 300mg). He has said that i should only stay on the Clomid for 4 cycles and if i dont fall pregnant then will have to look at other options. This is all very overwhelming and i would be very interested in hearing any stories good and bad from these drugs.
Look forward to hearing your stories, i have never been in one of these forums before.

Hi I was diagnosed with PCOS in July 2009. I have told my doctor I am in a same sex relationship and wanted to become a mom, the only help he offered to me was that I would need to lose at least 3stone in weight before I could be referred to a clinic for IVF treatment, I thought this was wise as my BMI is very high its like double for my age and height because of PCOS.

I have got to the stage now where my body weight has been near enough the same since I was about 13 and I'm now 21. I suffer fron lack of periods and take something called Ultravlan or Octuvulan I cant remember, I have to take this every 3 months so that I have a bleed. I'am wanting to concieve in July this year but I have struggled to even lose a few pounds. And the doctors have not been able to help up until now.

On March 8th I starting a weight clinic through the doctors surgery, which I hope helps me to able lose the significiant weight I need to, to be able to concieve successfully. For me and my partner this is an imnportant process as she also suffers with PCOS severley, Where the doctor told me I had a slight case of PCOS. But never explained what he actually meant. From the scan I could see I did not have too many cysts and were hard to differiate that's what they were. Does this mean that I have more of a chance at concieving?

Please help

I have been trying the whole weightloss thing for quite some time now and seem to loose it then put it straight back on again even though I am doing them same thing.
My dh and i went to our first gyno appoinment last week which was very nerve racking, but i was sooo relieved as my Dr is so lovely and made us feel comfortable and welcoming. Well anyway he has started me on some hormone tablets for me to get my af's and clomid to have so hopefully I ovulate and :crossfingers: I will.
With going on these tablets, I was just wondering what people have experienced with side effects and stuff, as I have already been feeling abit emotional lately but don't know if it is me just overreacting and being stressed out.
If I could have some help it would be great please.

Weight has always been associated with PCOS, although the doctors want you to lose weight it is easier said than done. I have tried umerous diets and excercises and not lost much weight. But then they next week I have just put it back on what I have lost. Its like a losing battle, I dont know what to do now because without losing the weight I won't be able TTC this year. It is getting me down at the moment and cant see a way out.

You should check the the instructions on the medication given to you by the doctoir. I did as there are different side effects for each medication. If you discover the medication is tampering with your hormones more than usual I would go back to thae doctor and state this to see if there was another medication you could try that is best for. Hope that helps

i know most of the side effects from what my doctor has told me and the pharmisist. etc i was just curious on how others found themselves when on them thats all

Just thought i would pop in here and offer some support and good news. It took me 2 years to fall pregnant with my now 16 month old daughter. I was also put on Clomid and i fell pregnant on the first cycle of it. Symptoms i remember are hot flushes, cramping, moody... but all in all, it was so worth it. Im now looking to see a gyno again to get my second child (fingers crossed)

I just wanted to say it took me 7 clomid cycles and 1 Laparoscopy to get pregnant. Sadly we lost ours at 10 weeks 4 days. We are just waitng for a clearance and for AF to come before we try our last clomid cycle berore moving on to IUI. I am on 50mg only as i do O on that dose.

I have both endo and pcos, but was very very fortunate to conceive my DD naturally (i call her my miracle baby as i was told it would be almost "impossible")! - i was due to start clomid the month after i conceived DD

I just have a quick question...with PCOS how many of you who have it, notice that your tummy looks to be about 3-4 months pregnant, ALL the time? - the only time my tummy went relatively "flat" was about 4 weeks post birth, and since then, it just seems to have been growing :o - i dont have all the "classic" symptoms of pcos other than insulin resistance, for which i take Diabex XR and the unexplained weight gain :shakehead:

i will also be going back to my endo specialist as i think it is flaring up with again with severe AF's and ALL cycle pelvic pain :( - Dh and i hoping to start trying for number 2 soon so id rather know now if there is anything untoward going on inside!

My DH and i have been ttc since july 09 and as i had already been diagnosed with pcos years ago i was refered to the fs in dec. i'm currently on the second cycle of provera & clomid and waiting for my af's to come. my fs has upped the clomid dosage to 100mg this cycle as the 50mg didn't do a thing. if this doesn't work then we are starting on fsh injections next cycle so i'm crossing everything so it happens. hope this helps.

I have PCOS too. My dr also said I would never concieve naturally as DH also has a LSC but I did. We had actually booked in to start IVF when I got my BFP. To answer your question, my tummy certainly has that pregnant look. I've even been asked when I was due :o At the time DS was 10 mths old so I think that woman who asked was a bit dense lol! I've never had a flat tummy. I don't have insulin resistance but I take diabex XR to regulate my cycles. It reduces my cycle from 3 months or more to about 6 or 7 weeks.

Rowellen : - ohh its so hard isn't it? - And yes, i too have been asked "are you pregnant/when are you due" :o - great for the self esteem...Not!

I guess im just worried that my DD was my one only chance, as IVF isn't an option for me (personal reasons not because i can't) and it just breaks my heart to think that she would be an only child :(

I'll be going back to my specialist on 18 May so hopefully i'll have some answers about the endo at least :rolleyes:

I am hoping that my pcos settles down after having bub as i remember i was miserable i was constantly in pain my mood swings were awful and i just felt awful.

For those having trouble with weight loss have your insulin levels been checked? i wondered why no matter how much i exercised i didnt lose very much if anything at all and it was because of my insulin.

Wow 10kgs? - im :pray: i lose some kind of weight, as im also excercising, but so far i haven't noticed anything (ive only been on it for 1 month) and i refuse to get on scales - last time i did i was 92kg which was just horrific for me :( - Interesting you mention about pcos settling down after bubs, as mine was fine until about 5 months ago when all the symptoms just started flaring up again :wall: - i had my insulin levels checked, which came back slightly elevated but nothing to worry about. my gp decided to put me back on the diabex (i was on them before i fell pg with DD) in order to intercept any further rise in the levels. - i go back to have another lot of bloods done in 2 months as he wants the diabex to take effect before checking again..

But at my last antenatal appt (26 week) i was 97kgs so in a month i gained back all the weight i had lost but id say its all baby and because i have been able to eat. I'd like to stay under 100 for the whole pregnancy and i know most of it is baby so i will lose it afterwards.

I'm hoping my insulin levels have dropped if they are a bit high i will ask to go back onto diabex, im hoping to get down to 75kgs after the baby. I noticed when i lost 10kgs my symptoms of pcos backed off, i wasnt so crampy and i seemed to have more regular AF's.

hun, you are doing awesome and you're growing a healthy bubba :D - i was unfortunate to develop GD at 28 weeks :( - it was diet controlled until 30 weeks where no matter what i ate my levels were sky rocketing so i ended up having to be put on insulin :( - wasn't fun, but the upside was that i actually lost weight and the week before i gave birth i weighed 98kgs. 4 weeks after birth i was down to 78kgs :o i had never felt so happy and healthy, but then slowly, over the last 15 months since DD's birth the weight has just crept back on and i cannot shift it and i know that is what's triggering the pcos, i was 92kg 3 months ago, so i'd hate to think what i am now :(

Just a quick question for all you ladies with pcos, do any of you have "skin issues"? - i get terrible boils between my thighs (so embarrassing :redface:) and i've read it is quite common in women with pcos?

I get blind pimples over most of my upper body. Face, neck, chest (even boobs:o), upper arms to my elbows and all the way down my back sometimes even on my bum:o. They are very painful to the point they are distracting and I pick at them until I bleed. I hate it. The pill I take stops that but of course I can't take it when TTC. ATM the combination of diet & metformin (diabex XR) is what is keeping them under control but sometimes on will slip it's ugly head through.

I'm not overweight but I really struggle to keep my weight down. I eat almost nothing but still put weight on. I'm trying to lose about 5kgs to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I had lost 2.5 kg (it took 2 months) but we went away for a couple of nights (yes just 2 nights) and I put on 1.5 kgs :doh: Back to the hard slog again.

Negrita, I can't imagine how much harder it is for you, having endo on top of PCOS. PCOS on it's own is bad enough. I hope we both get our BFPs quickly.

Mine start of as blind pimples and then they get MASSIVE and sooo painful, to the point i sometimes cant walk without being in pain cause of the friction of my thighs rubbing together :o they only relief is when they burst, but then thats gross, cause it takes ages to drain and i have to keep changing the dressing - im hoping being on Diabex is going to help with it as im sooo over being on high dose AB's probably every 2nd month, not to mention the thrush that the AB's inevitably cause :o - its just a vicious cycle!

Yes, the endo is a pain Rowellen (literally and physically!!) - i really thought after having a bub it would disappear or at least get better (apparently in 70% of cases pregnancy gets rid of it) but i guess i wasn't one of those lucky women :rolleyes: - Im back to see my endo specialist on 18 May, so im just bracing myself for him telling me i need to undergo another laparoscopy :( - but i guess the "bonus" of that is that i will be all 'cleaned out" in the plumbing area, so maybe i'll get a bfp sooner rather than later :crossfingers:

1stTimeMumma - I look forward to seeing your birth announcement - more proof that doctors can be wrong. Here's 3 of us that have PCOS who have all conceived naturally (pretty much).

An offhand comment from a chemist connected it to sugar levels. I was buying diabex & a thrush treatment at the same time and the chemist asked if I was diabetic as thrush loves sugar. My doctor had never mentioned it. I'm not diabetic but the connection to PCOS was to close to ignore. While on diabex, pregnant or breastfeeding, I've hardly ever had thrush. Maybe 3 or 4 times in 3 years compared to every month normally. I also had a rather large baby (4.37kg). I've heard that GD can cause large babies - again sugar levels. I didn't have GD that I'm aware of but perhaps my levels were slightly up? Who knows. I might ask my doctor to keep a closer eye on it next time.

Yes, definitely the sugars can affect how many thrush infections you can get! I had thrush for the first time ever 2 weeks ago, i didnt know what was going on!! When i went to my GP the first thing he said was coupled with the AB's im taking and my elevated sugar levels, thrush would have found a "perfect" environment to grow :o - wow your bubba was large! - im assuming that at the 28 week glucose test, it came back clear? - my DD was 7 pounds 14 ounces (3.6kg) but i daresay had i not been on insulin for my GD she wouldve been much larger!!

I am very excited and feel so lucky everyday. She is my miracle bub. And yes doctors can be very wrong, its just a matter of changing things in your life and you'll be surprised at what you can do.

I'll be :pray: to my lucky stars that pregnancy has settled down my pcos and the same goes for my insulin resistance id love to get down to my goal weight and just feel healthy again and be able to live without pain.

And i hope that they find a cure so that my baby girl doesnt have to go through what i did or more i hope i havent passed it onto her :(

That's so true. There is always someone who has been through worse and we have the benefit of modern medicine. Imagine trying year in year out pre u/s & blood tests not knowing what was wrong! We are lucky really.

I can't honestly remember even having it. Seems so long ago. I didn't know about the GD/size relationship until after DS was born so I wouldn't have thought to ask for it. My ob wasn't at all concerned about me as I had a perfectly normal pg with no alarming symptoms whatsoever (until he decided he was comfy in there and stayed a few days longer than he was supposed to :lol:). All my scans were measuring to dates though and she thought he would be an average or even smallish bub - around the 7 pound mark. She was as surprised as I was to see how big he was. Next time I will make sure I ask and pay better attention to my diet.

i just noticed your DS was born not long after my DD (she was born 21 Jan 09)! - so was the glucose tolerance test not part of your care, you didnt have to drink that horribly sweet drink and then sit around for an hour and then have blood taken? - i thought it was standard pregnancy testing? :dunno:

No I didn't do that test. I have done that before when I was being diagnosed for PCOS but not when I was pg. DS was actually due 24/1 but he just didn't want to come out. He was determined to be a Feb bub lol!

:rofl: He certainly was. I have the awesomest (is that a word??) stretchmarks to prove it too. Considering I'm only 150cm & he was huge, I'm surprised I didn't split apart. I asked my ob about my stretch marks and even she said "they are a bit extreme". He did decide to come out on his own though so he must have gotten a bit squishy.

oh my goodness you're so little!! LOL...arrgh don't even start on the stretch marks! My tummy's not too bad but my hips are just horrible! :o

TTC #2 naturally with PCOS, I was told #1 was impossible but he is H&H and really wants a lil sibling (so does Mummy ;))
So for it has been 10months and 1 angel bub, I hope this doesn't take too much longer.

Big :hug: hun - PCOS can be such a deceiving condition - i have both pcos and endo and was told it would be very hard to fall pregnant naturally, yet, i have my "miracle" DD :) - Don't give up hope, im sure your beautiful bubba is just waiting in the wings to make his/her appearance :hug:

Hi everyone, I'm a newbie to this site. I first got diagnosed with PCOS when I was 16, I knew nothing about it then and am actually saddened that it has taken me about 10 years to find a support group or other people that understand.
A few years later, when I was trying to conceive, my PCOS had gotten worse. My doctor put me on Serophene. Shortly after I conceived my ds Dean, who is now 4 1/2.
I still suffer from PCOS, as you all know, some months are better than others.
I wish everyone well :)
