I loooove my chocolate and do quite often buy fair trade. My local coles sell a bit of it now. Chocolateir and there is another one which name escapes me ATM.
Green and Blacks used to be fair trade but now they are only certified organic as far as I can see on the label which is a bit of a downer
I hope cadbury does go fair trade by the end of the year!

: brain fart moment
Problem is it's not just block chocolate that uses the cocoa. It's even harder to find fair trade hot chocolate and chocolate biscuits and fair trade cooking chocolate or cocoa and I haven't yet found a fair trade version of Nutella or chocolate ice-cream.
I'm not a big eater of commercial chocolate, so it hasn't been hard to avoid these companies. Pity about the M&M's - have loved the peanut ones till now
Free-trade chocky tastes better because they're far more likely to make a nicer chocky in the first place. My first proper job was at The Chocolate Box and the things I learned about chocky making turned me right off the mainstream blocks etc. Belgian chocolate is so much nicer and properly made - stirred for days and days, not hours (that's the difference between good and ordinary chocolate, it seems). Now, to source a Belgian chocky that comes from reputable raw ingredients...
That said, G&B's has been creeping into my life since I got a couple of freebie sample packs whilst on strike team duties during the Feb fires (it's not all stinky smoke and leaky hoses!) and that's when I decided that I love the cherry G&B's!
Though G&B's is a Cadbury's owned brand, the fact that it's getting a bigger and bigger name will send the message about why people are making the switch.
And quite frankly, for a little bit more money, you get a far better tasting chocky experience!
NOOOOOOOOOOOO! Not my beloved Lindt! I lurve their 80% cocoa dark choccie with coffee. And gold bunnies at easter..... I would love to try some alternatives but there seems to be so much that verges on being carob-like and I wouldn't feed carob to pigs! So it's really hard to find a great alternative, especially out here where there are no speciality shops.
Sam, the only G&B that is fair trade was the Maya Gold one, it has citrus and spice overtones to it so it's not a plain choccy
I've been wondering about the sugar in Cadburys. It's not an issue in Australia because we have a thriving sugar industry of our own but the UK imports its sugar and lots of it would come from the developing world. I'm sure that in poorer countries sugar would have some of the same issues associated with the production of cocoa and coffee.
hmmm good point. I wonder how you can find that out. I would be surprised if Cadbury aust even used Australian sugar as the price would be cheaper to get it in from OS.
