I think it's a inevitable problem in a big family that children are compared from their birth. I often hear my mother says that one of my nieces is not as beautiful as other nieces, more naughty. It sounds that there is no advantage on her which might hurt her if she understand what my mother says. Actually my mother loves her granddaughter very much, but I don't know why she say so. It's uncomfortable for me and my sister to hear this.
My sister and I are due the exact same day in march I think it'll be great and don't think we'll have any comparison problems but I guess we'll cross that bridge if we meet it.
My nephew was born 2 days after DS (and that was a bit of a competition for DH for me to beat SIL - they're twins). We're reasonably close geographically and keep in touch on FB as well as in person. SIL and family probably see DH's parents a bit more than us as they're a bit closer than us. We're lucky in that while we compare boys, it's more of a how is he going? Are they doing things around the same time / normal age range type stuff. It probably helps that nephew has been tall and skinny (genetics here taking after his dad and has had issues with enlarged tonsils area so hasn't eaten as much as DS) and DS is solid -not too small around the 50% height/weight. Means we haven't been super competitive here thankfully. It also probably helps that both of us are first time parents too.
there are 14 grandchildren on DH side of the family, only two of them have been born alone by that I mean the other 12 have been born near another baby (within a mth) two SIL are always pg together, how amazing is that. DS was born 10 days after his cousin, and we are both pg again and due three weeks apart
My cousin had a baby about 5 months before me and my aunt was always comparing the two babies and commenting on how advanced her grandson was in comparison - well yes, he is 5 months older!
Anyway, now that they are toddlers my DD is talking heaps and heaps more than he is, and my aunt is quite shocked I think!
I don't know why she is making such a big deal about it, kids do things at different stages and they all get there in the end!
It doesn't stop unfortunately, and I still grin and bear it.
My Ds1 has twin (yes my sister did so much better - she's special having twins) cousins, 9 days younger. My sister was admitted to hospital for bed rest just days after I had my son, I was still in there, no one bothered to walk down the extra two or three rooms to tell me - my mother knew. It wasn't until our SIL came to visit us, that she told me. The 3 boys are now 19 and still are compared.
