I am so upset at the moment. About 2 1/2 years ago my daughter and I went through a patch where we where homeless for about 3 months, during that time I was also going through a huge court case and regular visits to the children' s hospital, I promised my daughter I would never let that happen again, I would always provide for her and make sure she has a roof over her head BUT in 3 weeks time we will once again be homeless, I am such a failure!
My landlord is putting my rent up by $50 per week which I can not afford by a long shot, I have done everything I can do to fight it and I have done what I can to find something else (still searching and applying for any suitable places) The difficulty is finding something within her school zone and that is also accessable for her physical limitations (she has cerebral palsy) that also fits in our budget. Then on top of that I have to find a landlord who will accept a single mum living on centrelink payments. last time I viewed, enquired about and/or applied for hundreds of houses and got no where, I just got lucky with the house I am moving out of because the owner was in a rush to get someone in and I was prepared to sign up and hand over the $$ then and there.
On top of that I have decided I need to quit my uni course, I took last semester off and if I dont go back this semester I have to leave, and I cant study out of my car or while I am meant to be setting up a new house (there are other more long term reasons too, but no one will understand those).
So I am feeling really low at the moment. Nothing can go right for long in my life, I get on top of my depression, get through one of the biggest hurdles of my life, constant set backs with my daughters health and now I cant even keep a roof over her head - how can I be a good mum when I cant provide for her.
I am pretty sure that you can not be kicked out of a house if you have no where to go.
I am so sorry you are going through this. You are not a failure. You are doing everything you can for your little girl.
There should be some womens refuge centres that should put you up for a while and help you find a place. Do you have any friends you can move in with for a while? maybe instead of paying them rent you could make an arrangement that you will do all the cooking and cleaning around the house in exchange for a roof over your head whilst you save for a big up front payment of rent that might sway a landlord to take you on.
I really hope someone will pop in with some better advice than me. for you and your daughter.
iv got no advice huni....you are not a failure...life can be sooo hard sometimes and this sounds like circumstance that has caused this, i havent got children but i do know how hard depression is and if you want someone to talk to pm me. one of the women will have advice hopefully. huge hugs and lots of love huni, stay strong xoxox
Where are you in Melb? I know my landlady's looking for someone to move into where we are now. It's just a little granny flat, but it might be okay for a short-term solution while you try to find a proper place to live? We're in Hadfield, and we'll be out in about 2 weeks from now, moving into the bigger house. I'm not sure if the rent will be the same for whoever the new tenant is will be the same as we're paying now, but we're paying $160 p/wk... PM me if you want me to grab the number for you
OH No SJL what a horrible landlord to do that
PLEASE contact Teni and organise to see if this place is adequet for you and your DD needs.
Do you have acase worker for your DD thast maybe able to help you? They maybe able to help with abond, moving costs or get onto public housing quicker seeing you have a daughter with special needs. There is always funding or doors taht these guys can open for you.
If you have no idea please PM me and I can contact our case worker to see who you can get into contact with in your neck of the woods.
:hugs: hon..I know whats its like to live on the streets but ive got a feeling in my bones that your luck is going to change for the better
Ali - we aren't getting kicked out, I have chosen to move out because I cant afford the increase so we are out the day before the price rise starts. I still have the numbers of the places we went to last time we were in this situation but they have said they cant do anything while we still have a roof over our heads and then there will be waiting lists depending on where we are placed on the priority list (last time we were priority one due to everything that was happening but this time i don't know).
Rachel - Thank you for the offer of a chat, I will be seeing my counsellor again this week hopefully (she is technically on holidays but has given me her home number to keep in contact with her, but she hasn't been available because she is busy with the bushfire memorials in her area at the moment)
Teni - thank you, Hadfield is out of the area for my daughters school and other services she currently uses.
Maz - We dont have a case manager, we have been on the dept housing list for 3 1/5 years and still waiting for priority/special needs housing.
I have spent all day today with my best friend talking everything over, So my plan of attack is Take some more time off uni if they will allow it, put all our stuff into storage, stay between her place and my brothers place (neither of which is really ideal but its better than the car).
I am going to speak to the housing office again (called them about three time in the last few weeks) and then get the principal of my daughters school to speak to them as well.
With any luck we will get something even if it is short term housing for now.
Feeling a bit better now I have a plan to follow, hopefully something will sort out in the next couple of weeks.
hun. Having a plan in a good start. I hope something comes up for you soon.
By no means are you a failure. You are doing everything that you know as a mummy to help you and your daughter. As sad as it is - this is HEAPS more than some other kids have. She's lucky to have you as her mum.
xxx
sorry I can't offer any practical help but I just wanted to say I have seen your posts before and I think you are an awesome mum .... your daughter is very blessed to have you in her life, and the fact that you chose to care for a child with special needs makes you a very special mum. Hard financial times don't make you any less of a wonderful mother.
Sunshine - Growing up I had a crap childhood which I think is one factor which makes me so determined to provide everything for her and make sure she doesnt have to go through anything like what I had to go through or miss out on things like I did.
Rivlas - yes I am in the eastern suburbs, My daughters school is in Balwyn - we need to stay north of Canterbury road and south of the Yarra out as far as about Croydon to stay linked in to her services.
The Pixie - I think what upsets me more when things go wrong is that I chose to take my girl on and I sort of feel (unrealisticly) that I should be able to provide fully for her regardless of factors that are out of my control.
