Nude food again this year. They don't have to take it but they are given a 'prize' for taking it consistently. Personally I think I should get the prize. Same with the punctuality award.

Novella - apricots definitely work. I used those extra yummy soft ones that arent 'apricot' coloured. Do the manufacturers really think we need our died fruit to exactly resemble the original? So they go brown when dried, who cares? (Sorry, rant over!)

    Hahahaha. Absolutely.

Kids took leftover homemade BBQ chicken pizza today, fruit, crackers, muffin and veggies.

I've done no baking at all....
DD has been having fairly 'boring' snack & lunches. I did put in some raspberries with choc bits in the middle for a treat & something different.
She ate most of her lunch yesterday, said she wasn't hungry on the way home from school but proceeded to have two snacks when she got home and ate a good plate of dinner (fish, calamari, chips & salad)!
They are having pancakes next Tuesday for Shrove Tuesday, she is really excited about it!

Oh my goodness they put dye in dried apricots? Ick! Don't they need to label that?

My DD had a variation of her one yesterday which was: ham sandwich, soy bean crisps, grapes, cut up nectarine, vegemite on wholegrain crackers, leftovers of sausage and BBQd potato and onion and some rice cakes with chocolate topping. i ate two before they hit the lunchbox

No. They don't put dye in them. Sulphites stop dried fruit from changing colour which is why they are used as a preservative.
Look for E numbers or a small notice saying "may contain sulphur/sulphites"
    E150b Caustic sulphite caramel
    E150d Sulphite ammonia caramel
    E220 Sulfur dioxide
    E221 Sodium sulphite
E222 Sodium bisulphite (sodium hydrogen sulphite)
    E223 Sodium metabisulphite
    E224 Potassium metabisulphite
    E225 Potassium sulphite
    E226 Calcium sulphite
    E227 Calcium hydrogen sulphite (preservative)
    E228 Potassium hydrogen sulphite

ETA - apparently DS1 shared his fruit with his friend because he didn't have any. This was a pretty common occurrence last year too. So now I'm going to have to pack extra so DS gets enough. His Mum gives him all sorts of highly flavoured packaged foods and he trades them with DS for fruit and popcorn lol.

Also, how much food are you sending your kids to eat? I send heaps (well it seems like a fair bit!) DD often brings some home, which I don't mind.

But I was thinking back to when I was at school and we just didn't seem to get so much to eat. I think I used to take a sandwich, a kit of fruit and some other thing, like a few bickies, or crackers. That was it.

For DD, I send- a sandwich, carrot/capsicum/cucumber pieces, a bit of fruit, usually some sort of home made thing (muffins/pancakes/pastry scrolls...) and a packaged snack like rice crackers or tiny teddies. Is that too much?
It's just what she used to eat at home. They (my children) often eat all morning, and then in the afternoon/dinner time, they don't eat a lot. Though now, DD seems to have swapped and is eating more in the arvo/at dinner and not through out the day.

DD's eating at school time has really dropped off. She gets fruit, 1/2 sandwich and then something like a salad or yogurt. That covers the 3 breaks they have during the day. I was finding that heaps of food was coming back each day and being wasted so I've slowly been cutting back. Even some days she will only eat 1/4 of the apple or only 1/2 peach. She has admitted that she sometimes doesn't eat much because she wants to go and play.

She goes to after school care and yesterday she ate a couple of pieces of fruit and 2 pieces of toast there - so she is making up for it later in the day. Also snacks when she gets home from there, plus dinner.

We have settled into a standard lunchbox now.

Morning Tea - yogurt and fruit (half an apple or pear, half a peach or orange and a handful of grapes, appricots or blueberries - she picks in the morning)

Lunch - couscous with equal parts baby spinach leaves chopped through, crumbled feta and a squeeze of lime then 4x baby corn, 4x carrot sticks, 4x carrot smiles, 4x carrot circles, 4x capsicum sticks, 4x capsicum circles, 4x celery sticks, 4x celery smiles, 4x cucumber sticks, 4x cucumber smiles, 4x cucumber circles, 2x baby tomatos, 2x brocolli bunches

She has become quite particular about the amounts but since she almost always eats everything Im okay with it lol. It is all also easy and quick to prepare so thats a bonus.

How many schools do nude food? What is the criteria? I am assuming it means it can't be package, but could it be packaged before and the packagin removed. ie. a musli bar unwrapped at home and placed in a llunch box? Who decides if the school is 'nude' or not?

I'm send DD with only food I have made or fruit and vegies so it isn't a problem for me, I am a little perdantict about what my children eat and try to stear clear of packaged food anyway, I'm just interested to her the hows and whys.
