"That's no'r how ya make porridge!" (anyone else remember that ad?)

I thought the proper Scottish way was so thick you need a saw to hack through it!!

My mum is a scot too and likes it with salt. Everyone likes it in my family except me. I want to like it. I really do! But I can feel the gag reflex when I get about 3 spoons in.

I've seen a few posts like this, where people really want to like it. It's funny My friend is the same. She loves the idea of it and wants to like it , but when she eats it Must be the idea of such a healthy, warm bowl of comfort...

I thought the Scottish way was to have it with Scotch. DH's granddad puts Whiskey around the rim of the bowl. He's from Islay, and milk used to be a hot commodity (not a lot of grazing land amongst the peat), so whiskey was/is used because it was much easier to come by and cheaper.

Depends where you are, the water may not be the best to drink and it is safer to drink alcohol.

This time last year I gave serious thought to starting a blog called Pimp My Porridge. I had it so many different ways, it was awesome. Can barely remember them all, but a few faves:

    Dried cranberries and apple puree
    Dried apple and cinnamon
    Banana, sultanas and nutmeg
Soaked dried figs, cardamom pods and vanilla essence

I usually cook it in water, then add milk. Sometimes I soak the oats overnight first, then heat. I had so much fun playing porridge last year.

Amazingly, my baby is a human, and not an oat, as may have been expected.
