I thought the Scottish way was to have it with Scotch. DH's granddad puts Whiskey around the rim of the bowl. He's from Islay, and milk used to be a hot commodity (not a lot of grazing land amongst the peat), so whiskey was/is used because it was much easier to come by and cheaper.
