NaNa I get tempeh from Coles at Gabba Central. Go after 6pm and it's often cheep cheap. While you're in the Gabba, also check out Pennisi deli on Balaclava St, I love it in there! Especially after having lived in South America and Eastern Europe - there's an aisle there that makes me feel like I'm in either of those areas!

That's where I went! I've been going there for years. The new bakery next door is lovely too, and I'm not just saying that because the owner gave me free bread! It's delish, and very authentic French. No square bread here, thank you! Also, Samios is good for the same kind of stuff as Pennisi, but on Annerley Rd. I wont be going to the Gabba again any time soon tho, not even after 6pm, since I'm on the north side, I don't have a car and I don't reckon I could get DS to agree to a bus ride with me when it's his dinner time! Will have to have a look out for tempeh at my local places. I don't think I've given it to DS yet, so that will be another new food for him to try! He's eating more food than me at the moment, which is a bit scary. Growth spurt maybe. I've never seen a kid eat so much hommus and rye bread, it's astonishing!
I have just received a very special delivery of 1 litre each of my friend's famous jalapeno jelly and chipotle jam. Almost worth coming back to Qld just for that! I have missed it so much...

I do tend to find Coles much better for tofu and tempeh and things. Gabba Central particularly good - maybe it's the massive local student population? They've also started to stock tofutti, which is great, so now the only thing I go to Woolies for is Home Brand tortillas, and we're even starting to go off them. Woolies have stopped stocking DH's beloved strawberry so good, so he doesn't want to shop there any more! lol.

Has anyone seen my pumpkin thread? Can I eat my butternut pumpkin? It looks a little dodgy. I'm off to consult Stephanie Alexander....

OK I know I haven't been here lately but we had the nicest dinner tonight. Was so awesome I had to share: Rice paper wrappers filled with chopped Frys vege nuggets, toasted cashews, sliced mango, hoisin sauce, coriander, cucumber, carrot, lettuce and tomato.
To die for! I ate about 8 I think.

hmph! keep losing internet... this is a re-post of what I tried to say half an hour ago:
A good friend of mine, who is also a vego chef and mama, her husband is a buyer for the organic place in Forest Glen. It's awesome, and my family has shopped there since I was a kid. But yeah, being without a car makes that trip a little challenging on a regular basis. But I will be heading up to stay at my friend's place and visit my mum soon, so maybe a co-op is in order?!
Krysalyss - can I come round for leftovers?? Sounds yummy! I don't know about dying for it, but I'd get the train to Rocky if someone was going to make me home-meade rice paper rolls! I'm so hungry, DS ate most of my dinner (and lunch!) so I've had toast... The kid is eating me out of house and home.
    Pumpkin thread?? I'm intrigued...

Made them twice this week already, sooooo yummy Krysalyss yours sound divine! I tried mine with kecap manis the other night as we usually have plain soy... what other sauces can you have with them? ****ake mushrooms are my new love too, soooo good.

    Aliash- How are you going?
Yesterday I was taken out to lunch in paddington by my best friend which was nice, ordered 5 dishes between the two of us and left soooo full! Had risotto balls, rocket salad with caramelised walnuts, whats that fried cheese? Ah yep, haloumi which I dont really dig that much and potato jacks(so tasty!) and friend had crocodile Was nice to go out though, especially as there is nowhere down here to eat out at....
Things have been good here, DD is turning into the little vegie connosiour(sp) now happily munching on sticks of tofu. My Dad came over on sat "Are you raising her veg?" Me "Yup" "Oh no, why deprive the poor child?" Me Gotta love the relos

Ahhhh, rellos. What can you do...

My pumpkin thread was about a butternut I bought that had turned a bit bad. Wasn't sure if I could still eat it. I compromised and ate the top half

Went to alibi room on Saturday night, got the vegan pizza and one of their half-kilo bowls of chips to share with DH. It was soooo good.
Also found out that my musical idol is vego on the weekend. New project is to convert him. (the best part? I think he thinks I'm cool.)

Ooh Peach,I love rice paper rolls.I just wish they didn't take so long to prepare.I took some to a naming ceremony on Saturday - carrot, cucumber, capsicum, shi*take mushroom, green bean, vermicelli noodle, Thai Tofu (I think it is soyco brand) and rocket. They were very nice. Actually, the food table at the naming day had a vegan section - a whole half of the table. It was fab! There were lots of vegan cakes. My DD was overwhelmed by the choice, usually there would just be one vegan cake - made by me! Interestingly, there were only 6 vegans in attendance - my family, plus a boyfriend of the host's friend. I thought that was very thoughtful of the host (she is a vego).

I recently made some strawberry muffins for a party that my DD went to. At the end,the mum asked what every one's fave thing had been. One girl said 'the strawberry muffins'.I was pretty chuffed when I heard this as there was a pony at the party! Imagine the vegan muffins being more popular than a pony! (well,to one little girl any way).

I bought a bread maker a couple of months ago and it has been getting a lot of use.I haven't bought any bread at the shop in that time... Cherished,I am going to try your spelt bread recipe soon.

I have been reading about Beverly Lynn Bennett, the Vegan Chef. She has some amazing recipes on her web site veganchef.com I am going to experiment with some of the desserts.....

    I hope everyone is well....

    Morning all
Aliash - Great to hear from you! That is definately very considerate of your friend hosting the naming day, if only it was always like that.
Please share your strawberry muffin recipie?
With your bread maker, do you buy the box of mix to put in it, or make it from scratch? DP bought me one 2 years ago(!) and I havnt used it once actually we had a garage sale last weekend(so much fun!) and was going to sell it but figured I should at least try it before I sell it, so I got it out of the cupboard and its been sitting on the kitchen bench all week still unused. I put it back away this morning I should just suck it up and use it!
AFM nothing exciting as usual but thought Id drop in to say hi

    Tempeh burrito mix:

Heat up your biggest pan to hotter than the sun, with a little splash of oil
Add 1 diced onion, then 1 tsp ground cumin
    Add chopped capsicum, keep stirring
Add tempeh, stir til it starts to brown
Add corn off 1 or 2 cobs
Add a splash of lime juice, some chopped tomatoes and a little bit of vinegar
    Season.

We serve it with avocado if we have any and tofutti better than cream cheese. We eat it SO much!

SnugBug YUM and looks so simple, dh makes some kind of pumpkin taco mix too, not sure what he puts in it but I'd say it's go 4 bean bix, corriander, taco seasoning???? lemon and ???? I will ask him anyway

Peach herbs are going so well they are taking off in this warm weather! we are going to plant more of the wild rocket because we eat it so much and it grows like crazy I'm really eating heaps of salad and basic grains and protein, so rice, my spelt bread and protein like whey powder and tofu, that's about it really, oh lots of fruit too YUMMMMM... so happy this morning I have lost 4.5kg hahaha to your dh getting sick of the rice paper rolls they do sound very yummy... maybe mix up the dipping sauce or filling a bit? And use your bread maker!!! I buy organic spelt flour from the supermarket, if you'd like the recipes again just yell out

Alish those straw berry muffins do sound pretty amazing! any chance you will share the recipe? How great are bread makers! YAY I still love mine! enjoy that spelt loaf This I'll check out that web site too!

any ideas on what to use tahini for? I bought a jar and can't remember why now ...
You can use it to make yummy home-made hummus or you can put a little on a fresh vegetable salad along with a nice dressing. It is heaps good for you and has a vitamin that is almost exclusively to tahini (sesame seeds). When I put it on my salad, I first put a heaped spoonful of the tahini in a small bowl and add a tiny amount of water, and then mix with a spoon until it is a creamy consistency. It is not as strong this way and has a delicate creaminess to it. Enjoy
