Thanks Rouge Are those figures per 100 grams cooked or dry? I do eat lots of beans etc already, I knew they had protein but not that high so it looks like I'll be set
dh cooked the yummiest lunch today! some kind of vegie and bean stew with chic peas and couscous yummmmo I asked him what he put in it but apparently it was secret herbs and spices hehehhehe
Hope everyone is doing well.... It's been quiet in here! btw have I mentioned that I'm loving the tofutti! but after what I have got has gone I wont be getting it for a while...
As far as I know, all lentils and beans are great sources of protein but in order to maximise it, you should incorporate some nuts and seeds along with it. Chickpeas and tahini is a good example, so go the hommus!
Nothing interesting happening food-wise around here. I am plodding along with this bland-as-cardboard diet for a few more weeks until I either see some real improvement in DS's behaviour or I go completely berserk and have myself a little broccoli-tempeh-sticky-soy-eating binge. There's something that is still setting DS off, turning him into a silly, aggressive little boy, but I can't pinpoint it yet. Could be vegetable oil, though I don't use much of it. Or maybe it's the glutamates in peas... have to cut that out for a bit longer too. SO HARD!! And he's teething again and wants to BF a lot. Of all the times I could really use a whole mudcake to myself... hmm...
I did make a sauce substitute from red kidney beans, garlic and citric acid the other day. I don't think I love it, but it's the only way I can make this food bearable. This diet allows meat and fresh white cheeses and eggs, and all the vegetables I really despise, like swedes and celery and cabbage (without spices, anyway!) so I feel like my mind is turning to mush! It's really hard work to maintain it and still be BF and vego. But at least I can have coffee again, since it apparently has the opposite effect on hyperactivity! All this time I've been depriving myself of caffeine! Argh!
Sorry, I'm ranting... porridge brains. Does anyone have a recipe for tofu cheesecake they'd like to share??
Oh my goodness, how scary! I got nothing against people from Sweden, but swedes... ugh... I don't care if I never see one ever again!
I always request Asian Veg meals when flying, especially with Emirates. Qantas have a habit of screwing up and "losing" my vegan meal every time I fly with them. Once they offered me a green banana and a bottle of wine as compensation for a lost meal. Um, no thanks!
Enjoy the snow!!
Ooh, I made TVP spag bol last night for DP, and he didn't even notice it wasn't meat! Haha!
Sorry I have been so quiet. I hope you are all well.
cherished, I am going to make your crackers - yum!
snuggly, I hope you are recovering well. Your polenta sounds awesome. I made your sweet potato barley dish again this week. I love the cruelty free shop.
NaNa, sorry to hear about the fire. Bloody hell! That is crazy. I am glad you are all OK.
I have been craving a green curry lately, so DH made one tonight. It was soooo hot, but delicious. The kids wouldn't eat it that hot so they had something else. Since having kids we have toned down the spiciness of our food, although our kids eat spicier food than many adults we know. Sometimes I just crave a hot curry!
I have had a few Sanitarium 'Not Burgers' lately. They have changed the recipe and left out the milk. Yay!
snugbug you lil' jet setter, hope you're having fun at the snow
NaNa I have no idea how to cook with or use citric acid, I guess that's why you are the chef and I am the amateur hehehhe Hey I drove past soul food the last Sunday! we were gonna go there for dinner but they were closed so we went to that cafe paradisio place instead at the resort around the corner...
Alisha nice to hear from you hope you enjoy the crackers! and I am gonna have green curry for lunch as reading about it made my mouth water hehehhe. It feels like summer up here too, I am actually gonna sunbake on the deck today while I read a book
Krys, peach & Kaz where have you girls gotten to? Hope you are doing great xo
Snuggly I am soooo green with envy! Which resort are you off to? I actually dreamt about the snow last night. Miss it so bad!(DP and I are huge keen snowboarders) waaaaa
Cherished-How did your herb jungle turn out??
NaNa- Gotta love tvp spag. Tastes so good, but man it does BAD things to my bowels!
Aliash- Good to see you back. How good are the not burgers?! We had them in salad wraps for dinner on friday. Yummy with soy mayo and avo. I have always been a big spicy food fan, but since BF I had to tone it down so Im weaning myself back onto it slowly...
Last night DP made a pasta salad for dinner. Its Dad night sundays so he has to cook which is nice as Ive become a bit of a kitchen power tripper since being SAHM
Not working Christy! Bother! Can't wait to see it.
Snow was good. Just got in. Flying to Sydney tomorrow for this TV thing, then again for a hens night on the weekend. The carbon guilt is enormous and it aches! (or maybe that's from the skiing?)
Qantas excelled themselves with the vegan meals. Brekkie was cornflakes with soy and the yummiest warm fruit bread, and a banana. Dinner out of CBR was vegie hotpot with rice, bread roll and mandarin. Not bad, really. And the friend we stayed with cooked mountains and mountains of vegan food, and did a great job! Especially one dish, which was a pumpkin pasta, served inside a hollowed out roasted pumpkin. There was heaps of leftover pumpkin, and I ate heaps of it - heavenly!
Christy I tried to open your link the other day when you posted but if didn't work and it's still down today.. I love new ways to change pumpkin soup so what did you put in it?
SnugBug that's great about your food hon, I've never been to the snow! It's not really on my to do list either (any time soon anyway) I don't think I would like skiing as I dislocate my knees heaps and it just seems far to dangerous for me I need to stick to non-contact sports, swimming and the gym... I would however love to snuggle in a log cabin in the snow with an open fire eating the most delicious vego stew with freshly made bread
So my food has been pretty boring lately! I couldn't even tell you what I've been eating as there's nothing new... I did enjoy my green curry for lunch the other day though..
A kid I know - who is three- has turned himself vegetarian! went to the butcher with mum, saw the animals hanging, started asking questions, and now refuses to eat meat! I am so proud. Will have to come up with lots of recipes to give his mum to help her out!
YAY how great is that! i think kids are getting smarter these days A girl I know saw a butcher draging a lamb across the floor when she was about 12 and didn't eat meat again for for 15 years... she eats meat now though..... Ahhhh who was it that said if abattoirs had glass walls we would all be vegetarian? I think if all children saw what that little 3 year old saw none of them would ever eat meat...
sorry I've been awol lately, but things have been a bit hectic! Anyways, we're moving to Brisbane in the next month!! So you folkies up there better get started on the recommendations and suppliers of the good, good stuff (like tofu and spices!) for me pleeeeease!! It's been forever since I ate out in Brisbane, let alone shopped for food (other than wholesale stuff) so any advice would be most welcome.
Hope you're all well!
I think children have a genuine interest in, and affinity for, animals. Sadly, some parents and society lie to them about where their meat comes from. Children love their family pets and would not contemplate eating them. I believe that young children would choose not to eat animals if they knew the truth (ie. that an animal had been killed against its will to feed them). As adults, that reality has been suppressed for years or decades and people have become desensitised to that fact.
As I said in a previous post, we read children's books about animals, we teach nursery rhymes about animals, we point out the car window 'look harry, there's a doggy!'. We teach our infants how to make animal noises, and then they are served animals for dinner. Why is there a distinction between a pig or a dog? Why does society find it acceptable to raise one for food (in the horrors of the factory farm) while the other is regarded as '[hu]man's best friend'. While on this topic, did anyone watch a show on ABC1 called 'Nick in the Life'? The presenter, Nick, hung out with pig shooters and kangaroo 'cullers'. Very interesting and upsetting. A kangaroo was shot, and then a joey was discovered in her pouch. In order to kill the joey, the hunter trod on his/her neck. Very sad. Ask your average child what they think of that and I bet they would be horrified.
NaNa I haven't really eaten out much in Brissy but my dh loves surf and sea pizza which is somewhere around there... we went ther a couple of months ago and it was great
Alisha I totally agree!!! being desensitised is a huge factor in adults being able to block out the reality of what they are eating and where it came from... I think it is the same with violence... Some of the movies out there are horrible and I wonder how long it will take for all those horrible things to be second nature... in many countries around the world it alredy is and it is heart breaking... Back to the food issue, we have some clients who are organic pig farmers... they LOOOOOVE their pigs, it's really funny acutally! Especially the lady, they walk them, feed them great food and treat them like they are children on their free range farm... Then some how they find it ok to kill them and send them off to the butcher?.... It is a debte I have had with myself (in my head) many times and if I was ever going to eat meat or I HAD TO for food I would totally want it to be a case of appreciating the animal, loving it, feeding it and having it part of the family (like my pig farmer clients) and than only killing what I HAD TO eat... Thankfully we do not have to eat meat in these times because I would cry and cry and cry lots more if I had to eat an animal for food I've read that the aboriginals had the ability to energetically or vibrationaly call animals for food and the animal was happy to donate their life for food for the humans, they would litterally just lay there to be killed because the aboriginals appreciated that they had come to nurish them.... It's an interesting topic isn't it
NaNa - Yaaaaaaaaaay! I only know local spots, because we are car-less, so just don't really travel to eat out anymore. Vegsoc has a lot of great recommendations, but here's my list - pretty centralised to places within 6km of my house!
Wild Pepper Pizzeria in Coorparoo and West End (do vegan, also some amazing vegetarian)
Neo Pizza in Highgate Hill (vegetarian only, but awesome)
Phoenix Thai in Coorparoo (best Thai food EVER!)
Kim Thanh Vietnamese/Chinese in West End
Green Papaya Vietnamese in W'gabba
Indian Kitchen in West End (vegetarian, cheap and oh so cheerful)
Kwan Yin Teahouse in the Valley
Asian House in the Valley (Great salt and pepper tofu)
Era Bistro in South Brisbane (ring ahead to advise, they do amazing vegan food with a bit of notice)
Mondo Organics in West End (of course!)
Ginga Japanese at South Bank (controversial choice as some friends don't like it, but DH and I can't go past their tempura vegie curry)
The Forest in West End (mostly for their desserts)
Alibi Room in the Valley for vegan pizzas and an incredible vegan breakfast
My house in W'gabba. For a laugh.
Hi guys. Haven't looked in here for a while.
I am thinking about trying my hand at sushi as the only vege sushi in Rocky is avocado and while I like it I want some variety! Plus I am on a diet and don't always have the fat allowance left. Anyway can anyone here give me some inspiration?
I know the usual ones (e.g. the seaweed noodle one, mushroom, mock duck, avo salad) but what are some other easy ones I can try?
