Oh well I'm not quite ready to give up my diet coke just yet. Happy to say though both my kids thing its poison and have never even had so much as a taste and Marc swore off Coke a long time ago after being addicted to it for ages.

I used to buy the 2L bottles routinely, but eventually started to notice how many were piling up each fortnight at recycle time.

Then when I was training heavily I went cold turkey for months for the first time ever. It wasn't that hard.

But now I still crave it. So instead of buying the big bottles, if I do have any I limit myself to one can on any given day (375ml).

I don't really feel any guilt though, as I don't drink much alcohol, don't smoke, don't drink coffee or have any other common vices. I take on board what that article says, but the effects of numerous other highly processed foods and beverages would be similar.

This reminds me of my Grade 4 teacher who used to drink a 2L bottle of coke every day! She wanted to give up, so she started drinking 2L of Diet Coke.

My thoughts too slyder I dont have many vices in this world but coke looks like it is it shame I am having to much heartburn at the moment to enjoy any...

To be fair to coke the effects listed only happen to the extent listed if you drink a can of coke on a totally empty system on its own and don't eat or drink anything else while it's in your system.

If you have a burger with your coke (lets not go into calories right now!) the fats in the food bind to the nurtients and prevents the coke from leaching them out. If you have a good salad with it so much the better. If you had the burger on a wholemeal bun you won't have so severe a sugar crash because it burns slower. That will also curb the initial sugar high as the body breaks down the mixed GI foods all together (i.e. not the coke first, then the bun etc.).

Dopamine is produced in response to all food eaten after the hunger sensation has begun and to any high sugar or high fat food ingested unless one is full-to-vomiting.

If you want a reason not to drink coke consider this: the energy it costs to make ONE can the coke comes in could run your television for THREE HOURS.

i must say i do like coke but I DO NOT drink alchol appart from socially but not while preg, i dont smoke i dont drink tea or coffee!

I do not aggree with kids drinking it especailly the little ones with coke in a bottle.

that sounds like me, i can go through a 1.25L bottle before dp gets home from work, then probably another one with him.. im kinda dependant on it! i dont think ive gone without a drink of coke for more than a day(if that!) i know its bad for me, but like slyder said.. i dont drink coffee, or smoke, very rarely drink alcohol... i dont think i could ever stop!

i wont be letting Krystal drink it, maybe a sip but not a glass full one afte rthe other like i do, thats for sure!

we dont have soft drinks in our house and anytime we are out and there is on the table, dd always asks for it - with a spoon - she can't handle the bubbles and needs to stir it till there aren't any. i dont think kids should drink any fizzy drinks - water only and juice for special occasions - the sugar content is just too high for them- and if its not in the fridge it wont get into them - and eventually they will stop asking - i;ve seen it happen

Oh no im so addicted to coke... (Used to go through 4ish ltrs a day here till I fell PG) now I might have a glass once every 2-3 weeks.

I can see why people get addicted to it. My mum started drinking it when she quit smoking, which was about 15 years ago now. She goes through cans a day and you can tell when she hasn't had one in a while by her mood and the relief when she does drink one. Sugar and caffiene are just like another other drugs really.

I've never been a soft drink drinker really, but in recent years i made the choice not to drink it, coke in particular purely for the fact that it is an absolute waste of time - it has no nutritional value and makes me more thirsty! My DS has never tasted it and i hope to avoid that for a long time, obviously i want him to experience it so that deprivation doesn't lead to desire but hopefully he'll be set up with good eating and drinking habits and make healthier choices by then - how much better is a fresh blueberry oat milk smoothy or something like that!

I don't usually drink Coke, but when I was in labour with my DS, I just HAD to have it. Maybe I was needing sugar? Anyway, it stayed down for about 5 minutes...

A family friend is addicted to coke. She won't drink anything else. Only coke. She's had two lots of stones removed from her kidneys (emergency surgery), she's got Osteoporosis (she fell down a very small ramp going into a shopping centre and broke both her ankles SNAP!) and just last week, one of her front teeth fell out! Her doctors have told her it's all due to coke, yet she still keeps drinking it. Crazy!

Thanks for bumping Bath I have to confess that I occasionally have a small glass of Diet Coke, but not very often at all (usually with fish and chips, now there's a healthy combo!).

The real deal, Diet, Zero, whatever, it's all shocking stuff! And to drink it on a daily basis.........I can't imgagine what it's doing to your teeth!!!!!! (Sorry, I can't help myelf ). Actually, I can imagine, because I see it in my work, more often than I would like. Do yourselves a favour......break the habit now! You'll thank us one day

Cant stand coke as it is sooooo sweet. But I love diet coke.
I know diet coke is very bad as well (but for different reasons to coke). I think the main reason coke is so bad is not because of the cafeine but because of the extremely high amount of sugar and the effects that has on your body (like weight gain, rottign teeth, diabetes)

Like some dentists on here have said...We were never allowed any softdrinks or full strength juice as kids so we all have pretty good teeth. My sisters and I have never had a filling (so my mum is very proud). I can remember occasially having a flavoured mineral water at christmas or birthdays and we never felt like we were missing out.

Very interesting thread. I think it all comes down to moderation.

Another interesting fact is Coke-a-cola used to have cocaine in it when it first came out.

Pretty butterfly- bitters is 49% alcohol but becaue there is only a few drops in a pre-made lemon lime and bitters you can buy it from a supermarket.

Yeah it's usually what I drink If I'm designated driver but I think most people don't realise it's 49% alcohol. But you're right if it's only a few drops hopefully it won't be picked up in a breath test. Can you imagine, "please Mr Officer I swear all I had was 12 lemon, lime and Bitters ??"
