I did laps of the pool this morning with CQ's youngest on my back - damn I'm out of shape! Also I worked out how much extra weight I used to carry around - which is quite scary!

Starting to take short walks each day - will build them up slowly.

    Hi Ladies,

I'll be reading this thread with interest. I am at a loss as to how to start some exercise. I guess walking is the best bet for me atm. With 3 little ones at home and DH won't let me go to the gym then my only choice is to exercise at home. Altough the local Delfine estate does have a PT who runs out door classes for only $3. These may be worth a look at too.

    Hi guys.

Just wanted to pop in and say hi. I am currently doing the couch to 5km program. Had a bit of a break though over the last few weeks so might need to take a few steps back to catch up again. I used to go to the gym and did classes but i found i spent so much time thinking about what i was doing i never felt like i had a work out so think im more of a cardio room girl lol. Enjoying running but not while im doing it. Like the high i feel after . My body lately however has been really holding back when running. I just feel terrible when doing it. Any ideas why this may be?

Also what can i do exercise wise to speed up some weightloss? Im kinda stuck and really cant lose any weight. What i do lose i tend to put back on. We are also ttc and i really want to continue to exercise when preg. Does anyone know what is safe in terms of exercise when preg?

Beautitude - As long as you've commenced exercising before the PG then you are fine to continue it - as long as there are no other issues with your health, or your GP has a good reason otherwise - which would be a medical based decision too. The problems come when women start exercising after they find out they are PG, and they are not accustomed to it. You really only need / want to be working at 60% of your heart rate.
Quick calculation to work out what that is:

220 minus your age = XXX (then work out what 60% of that figure is with a calculator).
That figure will be your maximum amount of heart beats per 60 seconds.

(During exercise the easy way to calculate that is to do a 15 second pulse count - first count is zero...THEN 1, 2, 3 etc). Then double that figure, and double it again. Compare that to the '60% figure' and you'll work out if you are over or under.

    OR

Buy a heart rate monitor and it'll work it all out for you .

Re - the running. Maybe try a supplement like Musashi L-Carnitine to give you a boost of energy? It also assists in burning fat during exercise.

As for quick weight loss - I personally recommend (for myself) high intensity, about 60 min duration per session, and vary the exercise you do. Keep shocking the body to avoid the dreaded fitness plateau.

Leesa: so for me that would mean that my heart rate would need to be around 116bpm. When i run now i average 156 bpm (i have a heart rate monitor which i love) so that would mean that i could no longer run i guess. Is that right?

When you say high intensity do you mean something like interval training?

What Leesa's given you is a way to work it out if you don't have a HRM - it's about as good as it gets over the interenet lol!

As you have a hrm you can work it out through that

Ooooooo I woke a wee sore this morning. Not happy! I decided early that I wouldn't get on the treadmill today (too risky) but would do my pilates and strengthening... well... I couldn't help myself! I STILL got on the treadmill and did 30 min. It was a very easy session - taking it light so as not to aggrevate my back. I spent most of my time at 5.8Km/hr and an incline of 2. I barely even worked up a sweat! But at least I was doing something and keeping my hip moving. Then I did my pilates and core work (some of it anyway!). I figure I've eaten so much crap today that I NEED to do something! I can't wait until my PT gets back from leave! He's back Thurs but I'm not seeing him until Tues He's gunna kick my behind re: food! But the back and training...

When you are pregnant, yes, thats right. When you start working too much over that 60% you risk over heating yourself, and the precious bundle. Maybe a brisk walk, using the arms might keep you moving and under that threshold.

High intensity is when you're jumping , running, etc. Basically anything that is not low impact (which is when you keep one foot on the floor).

MG - well done for you - another 30 mins and more steps - aiding the movement of your hip!! Awesome work .

I started today tooo!! I put DD into the creche for the FIRST TIME EVER & she was fine! It was me holding us back. But now I know that I can pop her in the creche & she'll be ok, I'm getting my butt back into gear!

DH & I did a combat class today. I am so unfit! I got to vomit stage about 3 times and had to pull back. I was disappointed with myself, there was this very big lady there that kicked my bum so it goes to show that fat does not equal unfit! But its motivated me to get fitter, quicker! The trainer was absolutely excellent, couldn't fault him at all, really supportive and trained from the floor with everyone using the mirror and moving closer to people who needed a bit of extra help / motivation (me & DH! )

Right, now I just have to join the gym and lock in the classes that I am going to do. 18months ago - pre pregnancy - I was doing 4 classes a week and I was fit! I might have to start out with 3 and see where I go from there.

Yay how exciting! And back with Combat woohoo - best class in the world lol! Although I find it a little strange that he was on the floor with you...was there a stage??

Hon, don't be dissappointed with yourself omg if you got to vomit stage! My first class back after having G I actually did throw up! And that was after exercising till 38 weeks!

How is everyone else doing? I;'m teaching tonight and have no idea how i'm going to get through the pushups...I was tiling all day, well not tiling but knocking down tiles from the wall for 6 hours with a heavy hammer and my wrist is aching big time!

Nope, no stage, no microphones, small room like a dance studio. But him being in amongst us really worked. He set up the combination up the front and then continued to do it moving around helping whoever needed a bit more help.

Good luck with the pushups! I chickened out t bit on them not next time!

Hey Ladies I have a real fear of doing classes. I am afraid of being unco and not keeping up and or throwing up/passing out. My plan is to get some fitness by doing my thing at home for a couple of months and then pluck up the courage to join a class.
