    Less salt

    Im tired of reading headlines like less salt reduces cancer.
    What about less fertilizers in my food reduce cancer. Less modified seeds making my food please.
    Yes yes salt is bad so is fat so is over cooked meat and under cooked meat. You can find stuff for anything.
    But Im smelling a rat. I strongly believe its the crap they grow our food in and with that is doing us more harm then an extra dash of salt.
    Anybody else feeling this?
    Old fashioned sustainable farming, with animals that can walk and be animals, apples that are crisp but misshapen. That's what i want for xmas please Santa

    I'm with you. Salt is actually necessary for your body, eliminating it all altogether can cause problems in itself.

    The old addage is still the best advice - everything in moderation.

    I always find it amusing when someone preaches to me about salt/butter/alcohol being bad for health, and then go and slather their armpits in Rexona!

    Switch to Himalayan salt - loaded with minerals and tastes so much smoother than table salt.

    Bah! I am too sick of reading what is good is now bad and vice versa. It's so damn confusing and conflicting at times.

    I look at my Italian grandmother (still alive) and see what she eats. Uses salt in ALL her cooking plus adds salt if need be. Eats 'real' butter. Eats pasta, medium rare steak. She is one of the healthiest and fittest people for her age that I know! Same with my Dad. Apart from being overweight from eating too large portions - all his test for cholesterol, blood pressure etc... are 100% perfect.... funny he has a similar diet to my grandmother

    I use salt with Iodine but only b/c we were advised to switch when TTC # 2 and have stuck with it.

    I think its quite simple in most cases - processed foods are the big thing to avoid and its common sense from there. Yes there are other issues too, but avoid processed foods and sugar and you're on a good basis. If health is more important to you, then you can go deeper, organic etc which is ideal. Its your own choice how much you want to take on board.

    ^^ Definintely! I am fortunate to be able to pick to brain of my yoga teacher who is vegan and only eats organic. I don't take it all on board but have broadened my outlook on food & food sources.

    I agree with you so strongly! I have become far less 'concerned' about salt, dairy fats, etc, since learning more about the use and effects of GM/pesticides/loss of nutrient value with long storage, etc. I try to grow as much of our own veg as I can, and buy local and seasonal fruit and veg otherwise. I think what I do fits in between Kelly's steps of cutting out the processed foods/sugar, etc, and the all out organic option.

    There must be a proverb about this... Can't see the wood for the trees, maybe?

    Arrgh yes I hear you! Everything gives you cancer these days.

    I worry more about pesticides, preservatives and what not rather than natural things like salt or fat.

    Shopping for in-season produce has to be a good start. And not sure if its a mind thing or not, but i reckon hallah meat tastes better too.
    Healthy eating has gotten complicated and expensive.
    Im trying hard to get my family back to basics.
    Anybody got any tips for surviving the supermarket shop with kids? I take a list and stick to that as much as possible but i feel mean turning the kids down for everything they want. Wish they'd beg for apples instead for potatoes chips

    doubletrouble, in terms of avoiding the kids asking for the junk, it's all in the same couple of aisles, so just don't go down those aisles. And if you say no every single time, they'll soon get used to it and stop asking. As far as feeling mean goes, isn't it meaner to submit them to a lifetime of the health problems that arise from a poor diet.

    Ah, the brilliance of online grocery shopping, home delivered to my door - no impulse buying for me, and not craptastic junk tempting the kids!
