I dunno that cars are much safer than tuk-tuks. We hired a car in Thailand and there is no way it could have passed a roadworthy in Australia.
We jumped on the back of lots of tuk-tuks and made it home in one piece.
I guess you could walk everywhere.
Lol... maybe be careful if you hire a car! The van we hired in Bali was brand new (or close enough!), spotlessly clean and had all the expected safety features, as well as the creature comforts. The driver was lovely and very knowledgeable. I felt very safe with his driving and had no concerns. It was really cheap, less than $100 per day... $80 maybe? Plus a generous tip for his excellent service!
The only negative was that the driver's English was very limited, but I speak some Indonesian and my mum is fluent so we didn't have a problem.
Hey there - I have just done 2 months in Thailand with my kids. I had 3month baby in a sling/wrap everytime I went out and traveled - if availble used a seatbeat over both of us. I could also fit my 2yo on my knee if needed but she was usually hubbys responsibility. The traffic may seem chaotic but actually they are very curteous and there is surprisingly few incidents! Tuk Tuks are fun and the drivers will take into account that you have kids - we placed out little ones in the middle. Go and have a fab time - you will never regret going.
