We have also moved out of a place with black mould on a part of a ceiling. It was partly due to possum wee seeping down from the ceiling cavity above (ewww!) so it also stunk. I used to just get a mop, dip it in water/bleach, and reach up and spread it around. Bleach isn't too harmful for preggy women and using a mop was safer than climbing a ladder. It worked ok. sometimes needed two applications.
good luck. i moved out of a place as the owner said the mould in the main and 3rd bedroom, laundry and bathroom is not a issue with the house it was my fault for not scrubbing and bleching the walls and windows reguarly (yep it was even on the glass)
if she wont do anything, you can call the rental tribunal, even if she is your mil, its her resposibility to fix issues like this.
IF the doctor has advised you not to even be in the room, the house is not fit for human habitation. I think it means you can move out without notice. Check with the renters tribunal.
I know it's extremely stressful and not a great time, but if I was you, I'd be moving out. Mould spores are tiny and they travel.
I'd move out then... if your ML won't fix it. Spores travel. (is it the spores or the toxic gasses they probably emit?) They wont stay in that room, unless you totally seal it. Makes my blood boil when people try to draw money from a rental property that they can't afford to maintain!
