The problem with converting is that you need to have a different type of wooden supports built into place to hold the new roof (and don't forget it can have an impact on your insulation, etc). So it's extra labour over & above what you would need building a roof from scratch.
Neighbour had his done, $16K - gorgeous colourbond (*drools*).
We recently had ours fixed - some tiles replaced, caps rebedded and thingied with a flexible mortar. $2.8K. It would be another $2 approx to have it repainted with a thermally reflective coating...which is worth thinking about in a hot area. I'm saving my pennies to get it done.
I was looking at doing the same, my uncle is a builder and told me rough estimate to swap over would be about $15-20K and I would need to change my roof trusses, as they are different for an iron roof.
I ended up having the tiles cleaned, replaced, rejointed and painted/re-sealed for about $3500 and that came with workmanship warranty etc and about 6 spare tiles left behind painted to match in case any cracked over time. I used Roof Seal.......think they are in Vic - I know they've been advertising all over the TV here with some kinda of special atm.
I can't do a full reply now, have to go get DS who is calling, then off to school to get DD.
We have a quote to get out roof replace due to storm damage. We are getting zincalume, (not colorbond), plus a solar hart, aerial, and whirly birds, and it comes to about $33000... They legally are required to have scaffolding around the house, so that was about 3 grand. I will put a break down of costs up here for you later on.
olive, you've seen my home ... we replaced the tin on the old part of the house (not the bit where i had my baby shower) and they needed to replace majority of the timber as well as it was very old and not so great. It cost us $12k from memory ...... we did get a qquote from a guy in Melb who drove this suped up monster ute thing, he was cool, his quote was about $11k from memory and would take the mess away too ...........
We only went with the local guys because originally the quote was $8K but because we needed timber stuff replaced as well we had to get in other guys to do that
just a tip, if you are getting insulation or want to replace your insulation it will be easiest to get that done at the same time.
If you are planning to make it a brand new metal roof, then you have to know that exact area of your house. And the design of your roof should be considered to. If you know an engineer, you can ask him to estimate the cost. Roofers

Ok, these prices are for us in central qld, material will come from probably 2 hours away, so might be bit higher.
1. Measure site, take quantities and sign contract - $900.
2. Labour & costs to obtain Home Warranty Insurance - $750. Any work over a certain amount needs this I believe? Our warranty arrived in the mail the other day. If something goes wrong within the next 10 years, we are covered.
3. Install Tiger tail (complies with local energy supplier and work cover requirements) I think this is a cover that wraps around the electrical line entering the house from the powerpole out the front, if that makes sense?
4. Scaffolding - again to comply with work cover. $3500 (I have heard that some people here in town were being charged $8000 for their scaffolding)
5. Corrugated roofing sheets - $3750
6. Sarking and insulation blanket $825. This goes underneath the roofing, and does help a little with the heat, PLUS, I was told by several other people it is a requirement if you are replacing a certain percentage of your roof.?? Not sure how true that is though??
7. Materials- flashing, cappings, and valleys - $ 300
8. labour and materials to batten screw $850
9.Crane materials to and from roof (highset house) $250. I don't know if this is for the solar hot water system only or everything else as well.
10. labour to remove and replace all roof sheets - $6000. (they worked this out by taking our roof measurement of 150m2 multiplying it by $40)
11. Labvour and matgerial to replace roof protrusion flashing $100
12.Fixings and hardware $250
13. Cleaning entire site of all building waste and debris on completion of works and remove it from site - $500. (this is a fee charged by the local dump)
These prices DO NOT include GST! Plus there is also a builder margin on top of it all as well. There was also a location allowance added on top.
They allow for a 10% increase in the total roof measurements for the pitch of the roof and for wastage, incase the roof is out of square. I think it comes to probably a bit under $30,000.. I left out the other bits, like the new solar hot water, and whirly birds
Definately shop around though. we got another quote for the insurance company and it came to about 20 grand more..
