    Re: Homebirth General Discussion #19

We didn't have the 12 week scan this time and the fact that we haven't seen a heartbeat does bother me. I know many women who have discovered a missed miscarriage with the scan and not knowing is a bit frustrating. But I have a good friend who had no scans or doppler at all and I keep reminding myself of her trust and calm through her pregnancy and I just take a breath and keep being pregnant.

We will be having a scan at 20 weeks but I figure at least just having one is better than two. We don't use the doppler in pregnancy either as I read it has even stronger ultrasound waves than the visual scan. If you would use the doppler then I'd probably go for a scan instead but discuss with them beforehand how much you want to look at and try to keep it as short as possible.

I think the doppler can detect a heartbeat from about 15 weeks (earlier if you're lucky) and I'm due to see my MW next week so I've been tossing up asking for a quick heartbeat check but trying to stay strong!

I'm not sure that ultrasound would affect food intolerances, perhaps. Frequent ultrasounds have been linked to a reduced birth weight and increased left-handedness so they do affect baby's development. As our eldest son has autism (though he only had two ultrasounds and one use of doppler, besides doppler in labour) we do everything we can to protect our babies development in utero.

That's interesting meow. Id never thought about Doppler use....

And yes I was totally pulling at strings re the intolerances. No theory behind it.

Dd3 was my smallest baby but that's one of the reasons they stared the whole fortnightly Scans.... The chicken or egg argument

My mw prefers to use the fetoscope, but this time i had an anterior placenta that made it quite difficult to hear baby's heartbeat, and so we used doppler more than we would have otherwise. Sometimes, baby or circumstances have different plans to your optimal one.

Still here, but getting closer to meeting my little one.

    xxxx feeling the love.

Oh I've missed a birth, congratulations Special! Your little man is adorable!

Hotl here's hoping you go soon!!

I've noticed I'm not in the birth list btw! Somewhere along the way I must've been backspaced out. Had a baby boy on November 9 2013 .

Hope everyone else is going well with their pregnancies .

    Re: Homebirth General Discussion #19

    Thank you Dot face.

My midwife does use a doppler, but towards the end of my pregnancy she took on another Mum that didn't want any doppler used. My midwife didn't have much experience using the manual listening thing, (Pinnard?) so she asked if she could practice on me. It was interesting to me, but I know she struggled to definitely find the heartbeat each time.
I just googled the fetoscope - that seems easier to use but still safe.

    Re: Homebirth General Discussion #19

My first pregnancy was through a birth centre and they only had a dusty old pinnard up on a shelf to use when I said no doppler. I had different MWs every appointment and generally they never found a heartbeat. I figured the fact that baby was kicking was enough and we never worried about it.

Second pregnancy I had an anterior placenta so as much as my MWs knew what they were doing and tried hard, most of the time they didn't hear a heartbeat either. Again we didn't worry about it and just felt baby's movements.

Woo hoo! I was starting to think you'd be holding on to her till Easter...
I'm back from the GP - she's happy! She's not sending me for more scans (though would prefer to, and would prefer me to be monitored closer to the time, but that's out of habit) and hasn't asked to see me again Midwife from here on in, only! MW is back from holidays this week and I see her on Friday. Anytime after the blessingway on Sunday is when this baby can appear
