At what age can I start feeding peanut butter sammies to my boys? Can I also have ideas for other fillings please. My mum use to try feed us horrid things like date and walnut sammies so in desparate need of suggestions. Thanks
I think the recommendation is to hold off till they are 2.
And if a family history of peanut allergy is present, then wait until they are 5.
At least this is what I've heard.
I gave Aidyn his first peanut butter just before he turned 2, and he turned out to be allergic, as he broke out in hives within minutes. He must have had prior exposure somewhere/when in order to have a reaction the first time I gave him some peanut butter (even in the womb? who knows). As people don't have an allergic reaction from first exposure of anything, as that is when the body will begin to build up its defense mechanism for subsequent exposures.

Hmm.....my kids love egg Also some mashed banana. Although they are not nutritious at all, sprinkles (100's and 1000's) are usually a winner too. All the usuals, Jam, Vegemite (can you get that??), and honey for your older one (not bub until 12mo).
Vegemite! Sometimes my mum finds it in Beijing and sends it down to us. I dont know why they dont have it here, I think alot of chinese would love it. I will badger my sis in Brissy to send us some regularlly I think. I miss it soooooo much. Can I give egg white to 9mth? egg sammies he would love I think. Thank y'all for the ideas. OT- tomorrow is xmas eve! How exciting for all the wee 1's! We arent doing xmas here but the boys get chinese new year instead which is a week long holiday and visting family, eating way too much and FIREWORKS!!!!!!! Everywhere and every body has fire works its great! But..... its not xmas. Hope y'all have a great few days!
Vegemite is yum, I agree! But really, you are probably better off without it anyway! So high in salt!
I decided to introduce peanut butter early to DS (around 7/8 months I think) - there is a school of thought that holding off on introducing it is actually raising the number of kids with allergies. But that was my choice - some others would disagree with me. You can buy salt-free peanut butter if you are concerned about the sodium levels.
I think the recommendation for egg white is 12 months, but yolk is earlier. As with the peanut butter, I introduced both earlier than the "recommended" age.
Some other suggestions:
How about avocado? DS loves mushed up avocado spread on his sandwiches.
I also make him toasted sandwiches with lots of healthy stuff (eg. avocado, shredded carrot, salmon & cheese - he loves that one; or baked beans, avocado & cheese; or avocado, tomato, shredded carrot & cheese). Last night I made him a toasted sandwich with leftover savory mince (minced meat with vegies in it) & cheese - that was a winner too! Toasted sandwiches are the way I get DS to eat lots of vegies etc - he loves them!
I waited until 2 years old for peanut butter: and even then I waited until we were in the waiting room at the Dr's (for another appt) just in case........
In relation to Vegemite, it is high in salt, but a great alternative without the sodium content and additives is Promite.........
My kids loved mashed tuna in sarnies, and also mashed egg, as well as ham, salami, cream cheese, cold chook......
