alan - i have been collecting a "learn to knit" series (gave up trying when my nan passed away - figured it was time to learn again!) - it has lots of simpla patterns in it - textured beanie (adult) with crochet flower (which i'm sure you could omit), baby beannie, couple of different hats/ berets.... also has Mr Ted (teddy with vest and scarf) and other simple and more complex kids and adults patterns - let me know if your DW would like any of these patterns - i can photocopy them and mail them off for you
