    Exhaustion after follicle retrieval

    Hi

I'm having my retrieval on Monday - it's my 2nd cycle. After last cycle's retrieval I was exhausted. I got home and slept for at least 4 hours. Has this happened to others? should I ask for a lower dose of anesthesia? I don't mind taking it easy, but to sleep the whole day...what a waste! (I don't often get a weekday at home)

    Hi Buliej,

I have had similiar experiences, after my 1st retrieval I slept for approx. four hours once I got home and also after the 2nd and the 3rd - which was last week, the same thing, feeling quite exhausted and couldn't keep my eyes open. Although did only sleep for around 2 1/2 hrs this time.

I usually get home and put myself to bed to rest or sleep. This helps me get over any pain or discomfort. I usually sleep for a few hours. I just except it as part of the process as it is an aneasthetic which needs to work itself out of your system.

Oh yeah if you call 7 hours of sleep Exhaustion.
My First EPU would be something I never want to re visit again.
After the procedure in recovery I felt so tired I could hardly keep my eyes open...DH drove me home and I went straight to bed and slept for 7 hours!!! What a joke.
My last EPU I had NOTHING no sedation or any other drugs...I was wide awake and loved every minute of it.
Don't get me wrong it was painful but it was all over in 15 min and an hour or it ended I was at home on the lounge resting...no pain at all.

Maybe have a chat with the anaesthetist before you go in and ask for a lower dose, or what other options he/she suggests.

Good luck again for your EPU on Monday

It is quite common to sleep, or at least feel exhausted after having any type of anesthetic. I wouldn't worry too much about the amount of time you sleep when you get home. Enjoy the rest! Good luck for your EPU on Monday.

thanks everyone - I really thought it was just me!
I might talk to them to go easy on the anesthesia... and I guess look forward to a long afternoon nap

I had my pick-up today and asked a lot of questions. I told the anesthesiologist about my experience the last time (exhausted, slept for 4-5 hours after). He told me that this is not "normal" per se but probably has a lot to do with the "****tail" chosen by the particular anesthesiologist and he took a guess as to what they probably used that made me so tired and remarked that he does not use the same thing. This must be true as I felt so much better after today's than last time...and I was almost awake as I was rolled out of the operating theatre. I doubt that I'll have any say over what is used if I have to go through more pick-ups, but I thought it was interesting to see that it probably has more to do with the drugs chosen by the anesthesiologist than the procedure itself.

It sounds like you had a more positive experience this time - aneasthetic wise anyway. Did you still need to rest at all when you got home?

I hope everythings else went well for you too.

    Thanks Cece

I didn't sleep this time whereas last time I couldn't wait to get into bed. But they tell you take it easy - so I did - it was nice to have a weekday at home with an excuse to lie around!
