    Fertility Drugs & HPTs

As we've discussed previously, anyone using fertility drugs cannot rely on a home pregancy test (HPT) result.

Trigger injections like Pregnyl or Ovidrel are a synthetic form of hCG. Home pregnancy tests are designed to detect hCG. It takes 5 to 7 days for the effects of Pregnyl or Ovidrel to wear off. So if you use an HPT during this period you will most likely get a false result.

A blood test, on the other hand, will look at beta hCG levels and progesterone levels. High levels of both indicate a corpus luteum (the crater left on the ovary from the follicle that released an ovum) is producing enough of both these hormones to sustain a pregnancy.

However, if Pregnyl has been used in luteal support (the 14 days after ovulation), this will impact the hCG levels. For example, the beta hCG reading could be over 45, but if the progesterone levels read some crazy number like 1.4, this is called a chemical pregnancy. An ultrasound would most likely prove there is no egg sack and no embryo, although AF usually comes well before that happens.

    Hope this answers your question.

Thanks Original P, so given I tested 11.5 days after a 5000iu trigger, in your opinion would a +HPT be because of left over trigger or a true BFP hcg level? TIA x

    Hi Baby Dreamtime,
I would think that the pregnoyl would be out of your system by 11.5 days after injection.

also thought I would share my story.

I had a great big juicy Follie last week. I had the IUI done last Thursday so I'm officially 6 DPO (Dont worry about what my ticker sez its broken lol)I have been using pessies since last Friday (they make me feel so yuck)
I have been feeling really odd the last couple of days.
I rang our fertility centre and told them that I still have ferns on my maybe baby and the nurse said oooohhhhh in a really good way. have to wait until next Thursday to see I spose.
Now this may be TMI but I have really stringy but gunky mucas which is a light greeny colour like boogie when you have a throat infection. grose I know sorry hahahahaha
Has anyone else had this as this is my first time ever and it is kinda grosing me out.
Hopefully its the begining of my mucus plug forming but I really have no idea when or what that looks like hahahaha.
At least its made me laugh
Also I still have ferns on my maybe baby and I ovualated over a week ago.
Felt really ill after lunch yesterday and I have felt off for the last 2 days (just not with it, my other half will talk to me and I have to say pardon like 3 times before it actually sinks in) That is not like me. Also come 3.30 I need a nana nap, totally knackered.

    Please feel free to comment

    Congrats Janeo

Janeo, this is such wonderful news for you! The baby snuck in when you weren't looking. After everything you've been through you so deserve this! Keep up your vitamins, especially your B6 and zinc. And get lots of rest!!! You're carrying precious cargo! Only five weeks til the next scan - you will get there!

    Very good luck to you!

    HPTs again!

    Heya Babydreamtime,

I think HPTs are designed to make money for pharmaceutical companies!!! We've all had a turn at lining their pockets with our own heartache and I for one am totally against it! Lol!

Seriously though, having HPTd at 11 DPO and got a negative, then done a BT four days later and gotten a BFP, I believe HPTs are totally useless. I think they're dependent on the level of hormones, which varies radically between individuals. For example, my hCG was 175 and Progesterone was 82. I thought that was good until I heard Shades hCG reading was over 500!!! I don't know what her Prog was, but I feel sure there's no way she wouldn't have registered a BFP on an HPT. And in both cases it's irrelevant because both were BFP and stayed that way.

Do you get my meaning? My advice is just wait til the blood test. It's paid for by Medicare whereas HPTs cost precious money that's better spent on more important things. It's a hard habit to break, but honestly, every BFN from an HPT caused major upset in my household. DH and I were a lot better off when we just let those things go.

    :-)

    hi,

originalP... could i ask you about your BFP???
i will probably be doing me 6th iui this month.
i did 4 in 2007 with clomiphene, and 1 last month with a newish drug called Femarra.
the problem i have is my FS dosen't want to use any otherdrugs or do any other test's during the month cycle. he does a day 10 scan, i watch for a lh surge and when i think i get one he does the Insem.
i read that you have done nat cycles and wondered what type of cycle you got your BFP on? what drugs did you use? what test's did you have.

thanks,...i would love to try something a bit different this month to see if it would make a difference....

Thanks OriginalP, I totally agree with you re HPT, and to be honest it is really a mute point as AF arrived within seconds of doing the HPT. I was only asking as I have never in my life to my knowledge had a + pregnancy, and even though AF had already arrived, I was grasping at straws hoping just maybe there had been some sort of implantation for it to show faintly on the HPT, and have nothing to do with the trigger. From my research it does seem that the average for 5000iu to be out of your system is 10 days, so maybe I did have hcg enough to register on a sensitive HPT.

If this was the case it would would mean I was one step closer and give me some hope for the future, which TBH I am sadly lacking at the moment after 6 IVF ETs and 1 IUI. I guess just wishful thinking. Thanks for your advice.

This time its official for me BFN

This time AF is definitely here, so I now fully agree with OP, next time I will try not to do any HPT at all. I have learnt my lesson. Had BT tomorrow but now I suppose I wont have to go.

I had booster Pregnyl shots which were still in my system 5 days or so later after injection. If that helps at all.

I really hope you all get your BFP's. Try not to stress about the results too much if you can and wait until AF or your BT's.

We will probably be moving onto ICSI now when we can afford it. Hopefully I will be lucky like you Janeo and fall pg naturally.

You know, I just want to send a big hug to everybody that's BFNd lately. God it's awful when that happens, and every successive one is a total blow to the heart. We calculated we had something like 32 BFNs. The ones after the IVF cycles hurt us the most because we'd seen the embryo.

What I really want to say is that this can work out for everybody. Look a Janeo's miracle!!! Last month we were lamenting the loss of her tube and now look what's happened!

Diamond and I talked a lot about clutching at straws last year. We both agreed a person should do what ever makes them feel supported, be that acupuncture or eating moutains of vitamins or whatever. Even HPTs, but only if you know you can handle the disappointment of a negative.

I've seen lots of people go BFP on this thread. All it takes is staying in the game and being there when your number comes up.

    Love & light,
    OP.

Life throws us curve balls unfortunately and we have to go with them as best we can, sit back and look at the positives in your life and know that your beautiful baby is just around the corner....... Hanging on

    Hey Janeo!

My naturopath put me on Vitex to help me get to 12 weeks - my progesterone was low and she was worried this might lead to miscarriage. I expressed my concerns about Vitex not being recommended for use during pregnancy and she said she had used it to treat hundreds of patients who were at risk of miscarriage, and never had any ill effects.

So, if you feel like it, I'd recommend Vitex for the next four weeks. Along with B6, zinc, lipeoc acid and kelp. You also need to keep going with folic acid until Wk12 to support nural tube formation. All these supplements support stable hormone production which is what you need right now to get you through the first trimester.

VERY good luck - I love miracle stories like yours!

    hi IUI girl's

i was hoping you could give me your feedback on having sex the night before an iui???
does your fs tell you to do or not to do???

i am having my 6th iui tomorrow and wondered if it would hurt the qaulity of the sample. we haven't had any sex since monday night at the moment, so i was thinking that maybe it would'nt hurt to give the pipes a bit of a clean out ..lol!!!

i know you have to write how long it's been since you last had sex on the sample pot, so it must make some sort of difference either way.

    thanks girls
    bye

i just found this on a site...it does make sense i suppose.

Should you have sex before or after IUI?
Having sex right before IUI is usually not recommended. Sperm count may be affected if a man has sex shortly before the procedure. It is best if the man does not have intercourse or masturbate for one or two days before the procedure. After having IUI, however, you can, and should, have sex as often as possible for 24 hours after the procedure. This way there are more sperm available to hopefully fertilize the egg.
