I am doing work experience at the gym at the moment and one of the ladies I was shadowing this afternoon was pregnant (10 weeks). We were just chatting about general stuff and she said that she was thinking of moving back to her home town to be closer to her parents but she said they might end up sending her back to Brissy.
When I asked why she said because her pregnancy was considered "high risk" because of the diabetes, the town where she was from won't take her so they would send her back to Brissy at 36 weeks and induce her or give her a Caesar! Is that right??
I told her she should get as much information as possible and I told her about Bellybelly. Then she said even if she stayed in Brissy they still might induce her or give her a Caesae at 36 weeks.
I was really shoked. I didn't know (and had no reason to know) that they would do that because of diabetes. Why is that? She has Type 1 diabetes btw.
Gestational diabetes, there's no real reason for this (other than "big baby" but I am sure we can pooh-pooh that one).
Type I diabetes is a bit more complex. It is an autoimmune disease, which means your body attacks your own organs. So some physicians may worry about the placenta being rejected, although I don't think this usually happens. Or about the baby having been exposed to the diabetic state from day 1 rather than later on. Also, the conception Hb A1c has a bit to do with it - if the diabetes is poorly controlled then this would be seen as a bit more of an issue.
But if your friend is healthy and just happens to have type I diabetes it isn't a given that she needs to be induced or sectioned very early. (I work for an endocrinologist/diabetologist who runs a high-risk pregnancy clinic and I've NEVER heard him suggest a woman with tI diabetes that is well controlled needs anything other than normal person treatment. If they're really well and fine he sees them just every 2 months rather than every week, which isn't high risk at all.)
Great thanks, I have told her to get as much info as she can so I hope she will. I wouldn't want to see a baby being delivered at 36 weeks for no reason. Also she was really nervous about having a Caesar and didn't want to.
