    Hi Girls,

Thanks for all your ideas re lunches, you've given me some good ideas. Also Belfie thanks for the meal plan!!!

All my BSL's toda have been really good so far, just hope they continue to stay that way. I am counting down the days until my baby is born too, I am sick of GD already.

I think I need to change the depth setting on my monitor. We were told to set it at 3 but a couple of times I have *****ed my finger and haven't got enough blood, even one of the times today when I tried I didn't get any blood at all.

katones - Congrats on getting a good level this morning!!!

Yesterday we had my daughter's party for her 4 year old b'day which is actually on this Thursday. It was torture not being able to have b'day cake I have some left over at home which I will give away today.
kgb - At my first Endo apt my Mum asked about my Baby shower. I was told that the occasional treat was fine and considering it was a special occasion that I could just skip testing that day and have a treat but not get too ridiculous. So the weekend before my baby shower I had a friends' shower and they were so lovely and made sure they had diabetic friendly food but i still treated myself to a shortbread biscuit and a cupcake and shockingly enough it didn't tip my levels up very high, high 6's.
For my shower I only tested after breakfast and I had 2 lamingtons (which I made myself and had been dying to eat since discussions of the baby shower started), a cupcake which my sister made and was just so very yummy and then topped myself with some hot finger foods and some fruit. I didn't test that day but Endo said that a special occasion and 1 day won't do any harm. I did have a VERY GOOD endo though who said that if i got readings over 7 that I couldn't explain (e.g. testing out a new food) etc then that was when it was a problem. If i got over 7 but could explain why then he didn't worry about it. Mind you I only got 3 readings over 7 in my entire PG.

Moral of this long winded story - 1 day is not going to really hurt you or bub so a piece of cake as a treat once off can't be all that bad. Just have it at snack time to better prepare yourself and give your body more time to deal with it before you have to test.

Hi there, just wanted to pop in and add my two cents about remaining diabetic after the birth - I was on quite a bit of insulin (42 breakfast, 24 lunch, 32 dinner and 32 before bed) and it went away very quickly after DS was born. I was told to look at it as a warning, that if I did nothing to change my lifestyle then I would be more likely to end up with it in the next 5-15 years.

Belfie, not long to go now!
This is what I've been hearing alot but from my point of standing I'm not sure where that leaves me... I was not and am not overweight (I've dropped 8kg since being PG and I'm now 6kg under my pre-preg weight). My BMI is perfect if not possibly on the low side and I've always been active, size 8-10 and play sports in summer. I also have an extremely healthy diet, don't eat takeaway or much junk food. So i'm not sure where this leaves me in terms of what changes I should make to my lifestyle.

One of the ladies in my session had GD with her last pregnancy too and said her fingers were so sore from *****ing that she couldn't pick anything up, jeez hope mine don't get like that, have any of yours?

If you girls go for lunch somewhere what do you usually get to eat? Even if its at a shopping centre? I am so afraid I'll eat the wrong foods that will put me over the level. Do you find you eat the same things over and over almost everyday?
Leigh26 - Nope my fingers never got sore but I did tend to find that some fingers gave me blood easier than others. My best fingers were on my left hand and were my pinky, ring finger and middle finger. I'd just alternate the spot I used and had no problems. I always used the 1 or 2 setting on my lancet.

Re lunch, my staple for ALONG time was cheese & tomato. Don't have to worry about meats or reheating stuff and it was yummy. I used to throw in some cucumber, shreaded carrot and maybe some phili cream cheese or advocado and voila, yummy sandwhich or I also used to have multigrain lavash wraps which I found in Woolies.. Yummo and didn't affect my levels. I used to have a sandwich or wrap along with a piece of fruit or a yoghurt. Can also throw in a can of tuna or salmon and I'd add the tuna once or twice a week. I used to get the tomato & capsicum flavoured tuna, yummy yummy. Also did the flavoured tuna with a salad which was very filling as I'd throw in as much vegies to the salad as I could fit in the bowl. If you like soup then you can try some of the canned vegetable soups along with a slice of bread and piece of fruit. I also found baked beans on toast worked really well with me, gave me 4's.. I always just mixed these types of carbs along with a piece of fruit or yoghurt and that gave me just enough variety to manage. Again all this is trial and error and how it'll affect your levels but here are some more ideas of what I ate.

    Hi Girls,

Snowchickie - Thanks for all your great ideas about lunch, I'll try some of the things you have suggested.

Yesterday was my first full day of testing and had no problems at all. My levels were all fine but today is a different story. My fasting level before breakfast was only 2.6, is this really low? I was told it had to be under 5.5 so not sure if 2.6 is too low or not. Also my reading 2 hrs after breakfast was 7.4, I was told I had to keep under 7. I had 2 pieces of multigrain toast for breakfast, this was one of the foods my diabetes educator recommended. I ate this for breakfast yesterday and my level 2 hrs after was fine, so why was it higher today? Could it have something to do with my level being so low before breakfast? I am a bit nervous to eat and test for the rest of the day now.

leigh... my endocrinologist said to me today that afew of my levels around 4.6/4.2/4.3 were getting too low.. so i would say it was LOW, but then it may also depend on what your DR says...

Thanks Katones, I was thinking my level was really low. Do you think coz it was too low that, that maybe the reason why my after breaky level was high? Like maybe my sugar level spiked coz of it or something?

I go back to my diabetes educator on Monday so I will see what she says then.

    hiya

If you were on insulin that would be considered a hypo so you would be advise to have so many jellybeans and a multigrain sandwich.

So yes that is low. Just keep an eye on it. Did you have anything to drink like orange juice or anything?

let us know what your diabetes educator says.

    Hi Angel,

Im not on insulin, not yet anyway. I got the 2.6 before breaky then all I ate at breakfast was 2 pieces of multigrain toast with vegemite and some water oh and I took my blackmores preg vitamin. I am about to check my bsl (2 hrs after lunch), hopefully it will be within normal range.

I have my caesar booked for the 3rd of November and I can't wait til all this is over with.

    Hi Ladies,
Hope you are all well this afternoon. I have been chatting away in other forums but i thought i'd pop in here looking for some support? I am nearly 27 weeks pregnant and yesterday failed my gtt. It was to be expected as i did have it with my other pregnancies but i had an earlier gtt done at 16 weeks and passed so i remained hopeful. I know that the fundal height measurement is an inaccurate way to measure babies size but the ob yesterday said he was quite big already. By the same token with my second child i was induced at 36 weeks because of diabetes and also liver problems and they said she would be near on 10 pound and was just 6. So i'm trying to not stress to much. What made it worse was all the things i bought that i thought we'd all enjoy from the supermarket and i cant have any of it!No icypoles, crumpets, blueberry cordial, custard tarts. Everyone better eat them quick or they are going to be taunting me with there yummy sweetness. Well tommorow i start finger *****ing and checking my levels. Its still familiar to me,but i hate it. Why couldnt my body have done the right thing this time and co-operate. Can't wait to hold my bubba, cant stand pregnancy! Boo hoo. think I'll go and sit in my sook chair.

    Hi Pollyanna,

Sorry to hear you have once again been diagnosed with GD. I am also a newcomer to this thread as I was only diagnosed last week. This is my 2nd pregnancy but wasn't tested for GD with my first so not sure if I had it then or not. Today is my 2nd full day of testing my levels and I can already say that I am sick of doing it. I am counting down the days already until my baby is born. My house has junk food in it too and DH sat in front of me before eating chocolate, so of course I've now been craving it all arv. I've been eating fruit but for some reason fruit never fills me up, it never has. I am starving now and holding out for dinner.

Good luck with your testing tomorrow!!!

    Thanks for your support Leigh,
I'm so not looking foward to the jabbing. I conceived this pregnancy with fertility injections and i totally believe the finger *****ing hurts more than the jabs in the belly. so i guess if i need insulin at least that wont be a hurdle.Fingers crossed thats not the case though.I know you are having a caesar are they also taking you a little early?

    Hi Pauline,

I have to have a caesar no matter what. My due date is the 13th of Nov but they had me booked for my caesar on the 6th which was a week earlier but now I have GD they have bought it forward to the 3rd, so I've got just under 7 wks to go. I am hoping the weeks go by quickly.

Fingers x'd we both wont require insulin.

By the way, congratulations on your pregnancy!!!

    hi leigh26 and pollyanna.

leigh - re your bfast reading yes it could have been as you had a very low fasting level. are you having anything after dinner, before bed?? i found i would wake super thirsty in the morning and having a snack after dinner like warm milk and a "le rice" or even just the milk depending if i was hungry, realkly helped with this. if your level is so low after fasting this might help stabilise your fasting levels. my endo said anything under 4 was a little too low and i could afford to add more to the meal i'd had but also i wasn't having to test my fastings levels, only the ones after meals.

i also found that low gi bread spiked my levels way higher than normal wholemeal or multigrain so could just be the first time you ate it something balanced it out but this time didn't.

p.s. sorry if any typos but trying to type one handed while holding a 4 week old in the other..

    Hi Snowchickie,

Thanks for your advice. Last night around 8:30pm I ate 1/2 cup of low fat custard and 1/2 a punnet of strawberries. I've just eaten the same just now so it will be interesting to see what happens in the morning.

Leigh26 - good luck with the measurements tomorrow. i was told that I shouldn't go below 3.5 (but I was also never testing fasting levels anyway). I have also found that the same foods would produce different readings on different days... so you might find tomorrow is fine! The other thing I would check with your DE is if there's a number you can ring with any questions. My DE was always great for saying just ring rather than wait for the next appointment.

snowchickie79 - I agree with what you said about "typical low GI foods" sometimes spiking your BSL's anyway. I found one thing I could never get away with was baked beans on multigrain rye... something I thought would be fine... but always put me high! So I guess that's where the individual bit comes in! I'm also amazed with your only 3 BSL's over 7! I've had HEAPS over 7... but they've only ever told me to be under 8 (or to put my insulin up if I'm over 8). So now I'm worried that maybe it hasn't been well controlled enough and baby won't be well (ok, so i'm probably being a late night 3rd tri stress-head!). It just seems crazy to me that we all go by such different guidelines! Seriously, last week I had 9 (out of 21) readings over 7! What if my baby is huge? Does that mean he's more likely to be fat? And does it also mean he's more likely to have trouble with his BSL's at birth??? It is so frustrating having GD!

pollyanna - sorry to hear you have to join us, but it sounds like you're a pro at this (not that you want to be!).

Apart from me being a stress-head tonight, I'm feeling nearly organised for baby... I've been craving custard in a major way. That and cherry tomatoes... . I've also been going in and being monitored on the CTG (3 times so far) and everytime bubba boy is doing just fine - so that's nice. Except I think they forgot about me this morning because instead of being 20 mins, it was 40 mins! hmmm. I also had more acupuncture today, and have induction massage on Monday (prior to going to hossie monday night for the prostin gel)... plus I'm doing RLT, EPO, walking... i WILL be DTD this weekend anything to bring on some babyness! Send me labour vibes!

    Cheers
    Belfie
P.S. Snowchickie - Chloe looks just adorable in that pic!

Belfie is right there in saying same foods different days different levels... also if you are down/stressed/emotional etc.. your levels can alter....

belfie - I really don't think that you getting levels over 7 means anything in particular because to be honest the whole testing and levels as a whole i found quite abnormal in that if you test within 5 of another test you could get a completely different reading.

I was told to also keep my levels under 8 but I was told if i got 3 levels over 7 to call my endo as it could mean that things were beginning to escalate. The ONLY reason i was told this was that i was consistently getting 4 through early 6 readings so above a 7 would have been out of the norm for me. I really don't think that this means you will have a bigger baby or that bubba will need nursery care. Bare in mind that even with these low levels my bubba was in nursery the first night. Her first BSL was perfect but her second was low.. You also need to remember that ladies with GD and on insulin, and even those on high doses of insulin, many of their babies do not require special care. Your levels are certainly not an indicator of things to come and i really don't think worth stressing about at this stage. GD is made to be such a scary thing and ultimately if you are stressed, that can have more impact on the baby at this stage than the GD is. You are staying under the 8 marker so you should be very pleased with yourself and how well you have done to get this far. Please don't stress or read too much into my experiences because if anything this whole GD experience should have taught us all that we are all individuals and our bodies work differently.

Enjoy these last few weeks of being pregnant and feeling your baby moving inside you. It feels like such a distant memory for me now and i miss laying and watching chloe moving in my belly. I love being able to hold her and cuddle her and kiss her (which is constant) but treasure these last weeks of pregnancy and rest up and please don't stress.. sending lots of *labour vibes* and your way..

Katones - aaw big hugs for you hun! I was always told that a naughty day here and there wasn't going to matter in the scheme of things, so don't beat yourself up. Have you got anything nice planned for the weekend while DH is away? And whinge all you like... you need somewhere to vent!

Snowchickie - thank you so much you've made me feel a million times better. I'm prepared for the fact that bubby may need nursery care (he'll automatically be admitted because I'm on insulin - the variable will be if he actually has to spend any time there). I just was so worried that i'd made him fatter IYKWIM... even though I don't know if he actually is fat anyway yet And lol I just got an 8.6... but I had a slightly naughty lunch... so i'll up my insulin by 2 as they've told me - so funnily enough I'm not too upset by that. And I can't wait to meet him - I've been washing a few more bits and pieces... hanging baby mittens out to dry - they're so cute!!! And I've just done my obligatory waddle around the block. OMG sooo uncomfortable, I'm thrilled and hoping it means he's dropped a bit!!! Thank you for the labour vibes too!!

Hope everyone else is going well
