The question about testing baby is interesting. The heel ***** test does test for congenital hypothyroidism - but that condition is different from hypothyroidism we have (most common cause is iodine deficiency which is mainly a problem in less developed countries). When my DD was born nothing was mentioned about any testing for her. But when DS was born they wanted a blood test apart from heel ***** (which was fine) to check thyroid function. I was very curious about this as no one had ever mentioned that when DD was born and she has never been checked. I said I wanted to speak to my endocrinologist as I didn't want an unnecessary blood test as I had heard getting the required amount of blood from newborn not always that pleasant. She said was unnecessary unless showing any signs of low thyroid levels and Hashimotos antibodies can not be checked until greater than 12 weeks anyway due to fact maternal antibodies can be present. So I never opted to have DS tested. I really never got to the bottom of why the hospital thought should have it done.
