Arrow Confused and Concerned(period vs miscarriage?)

I found this place through google.. and it really is just to ask a question and browse things.

Anyways.. I had unprotected sex about 6-8 weeks ago(more than once.. but I am on birth conrtol)... and had an extremely light period that lasted all of 2 days, about 2 weeks ago.

The past week I have been bleeding like crazy, and I have had bad cramps that are similar to period cramps and pains in my right side(mainly last night and this morning). It got me worried. Because I am not supposed to have my period for about another week and a half.

I didn't even think I could be pregnant until my (ex) boyfriend asked me if i was when i told him "we have to talk"...

I am on birth control and I never have missed a pill...(I am about half way through the pack im on now)

I was wondering could this just be my body reacting to the birth control(been on it for 6 months- alesse), or could it be something more?
If I took a pregnancy test this weekend.. would it still detect the hormones???

Sorry, I am new to the whole birth control thing and I am 20 and just a student.. so I haven't been 'around the block' when it comes to pregnancy and such.
I guess you think you are ready for things when you really aren't.

    Please help =)
    Thanks!

Hi and welcome to BB. It is very possible that you could be pregnant and may be miscarrying. Bleeding and cramping can be an indication of miscarriage, I had this happen when I miscarried early last year. A pregnancy test may show a positive result (if you are pregnant) if your hormone levels are strong enough, but I highly recommend you go and see your GP today. I don't want to scare you because it may not be your issue, but I had pains in one side when I miscarried and I was given a scan and they suspected I had an ectopic pregnancy which is very dangerous and I was sent to emergency. I think it's best to get seen ASAP just to rule it out. A GP may be able to give you some answers anyway.

    Best of luck

    Hi Stina,

I agree with Trish, I'd get yourself to the doctor. No contraception is 100% effective - my daughter is proof of pregnancy on the pill!

Hoping it all works out for you.

    Thanks for a quick reply.

I just had to google ectopic pregnancy. And that sounds scary.
Unfortunately I can't see a doctor(walk-in.. away up at school ugh) till monday.. if the pain gets worse: I will go to the emergency room, I guess.

I really appreciate your inputs more than anything right now.

    So thanks again!!!!

Do you have a GP you can contact and explain that it is an emergency? They take miscarriages pretty seriously, hopefully you can be seen sooner.

Again, it might not be a miscarriage, but it's definitely worth ruling it out as soon as you can. Do go to emergency if things get worse.

Let us know how you go

So I took your advice and went to the hospital yesterday cause the pain was that bad
(ER.. is the easiest thing when your GP is 20 hours away)
Got checked out.. poked and prodded.. and scanned and blood tests.

    turns out its a miscarriage.
I am just in shock and awe and whoa state.
    was 7 weeks along.
they sent me home.. put me on 'bed rest' for the week.. said if i didn't "pass it" naturally..
to come back and i would need that D and C thing done.
It all freaks me out cause i have no idea about any of that stuff.

My head is everywhere at the moment. it all feels so surreal.
i dont even know how to describe it.

    Stina,
So sorry for you, it must have come as a real shock...both the pregnancy and miscarriage all at the same time...But I guess at least you know now, you don't sort of have to wonder about it anymore if you know what I mean.
Take care of yourself and make sure you can talk to someone about it, don't let your feelings all bottle up inside. Look after yourself, thinking of you.

You did the right thing by going to the ER! I can understand that you're in a state of shock, and possibly even having very confusing mixed feelings. The best thing you can do now is follow your doctors' advice -- especially about avoiding an infection for the next few weeks (no tampons, sex, baths, etc.). If you have the possibility you might want to have at least a short chat with a counselor (since you're a student, I'm guessing one is relatively easily available at your school/uni?) to help you sort out what all of this means to you.
