For some reason, usually chromosomal, when the egg is fertilised and starts to split, one part develops into what will become the placenta but the bit that should develop into the embryo doesnt. Irrespective of terms, conception occurred. When a pregnancy fails early, it's a miscarriage. So this is likely a missed miscarriage.

I have heard that sometimes embryos can be missed so it's good you're going back for another scan. It's tough when you want to hope but the outcome is likely not good.
