Can you toilet train with pull ups?

Seth is really ready now for toilet training. I'm thinking of getting him a potty tonight and start training. I'll be able to train at home with underwear but soon I'll be working (he'll be with me) and I really don't want to have to worry about accidents in the work place. So I'm wondering how long before its possible to use pull ups during the day and perhaps underwear in the afternoons & during the day. And using pull ups when I can't have accidents iykwim?

Has anyone toilet trained this way? I really don't have any other options so I'm really hoping the answer is yes. I remember we toilet trained Paris with both and it worked fine, she never relied on the pull ups because the praise she got from not using them was enough for her to want to use the toilet, I'm just worried it might not be so easy this time.

Hey Cai,

the pullup's have a wetness liner in them now so he will know when he has been but you will niot have any mess to clean up. they did help Sarah to recognise her wees and now she lets us know when she is doing one. next step is learning to recognise before she does one.

I found that with my eldest son, nephew and a friend's son that pull ups were just used as nappies and didn't encourage training at all. To me they are just expensive nappies with no real training purpose. I just used jocks with oddly enough panty liners in them if we went out.
they do the same job but can help feel when they are wet but absorb accidents and are a lot cheaper than pull ups.

I think it really depends on the child - they were great for with my DD but i dont have any other kids to compare that to!

She used to wear them to bed and at first, when we first started training, and when we went out of the house.

She recognised the wetness and did not like it at all - and they still saved me the mess.

I have been wondering about pull ups with DD, as she is good with wees, but not with poos. The problem is that she thinks they are swim nappies as they look similar I have found the training nappies from Kmart and Best & Less are quite good, they have a foam inner. Can fail with a huge wee, but seem to catch enough of the little ones.

Rissy got nappy rash so bad from them even though Huggies normal nappies worked great So we didnt use them.

They didn't help with Mason. He just acted like he had a nappy on. I didn't bother with them for Angus for that reason.

Thanks ladies for the quick responses Very helpful, looks like the consensus is depends on the child.

I am just going to have to take it one day at a time. There are a few other cheaper brands of training pants now so I plan to give a few of them a go.

YAY the next chapter LOL! I knew he was nearly getting ready as he's been asking to go to the toilet for a while now, but the past few days he strips off to nothing once he's done the slightest wee and tells me he needs a new nappy. And he'll tell me as or just before he's doing it. So I think we are definitely ready.

Does he go to the toilet with Marc? They like "doing it just like daddy". DS's TT was sealed the day he got to pee on the back fence with his dad.....

The pullups certainly stopped any messy accidents but as quite a few other said Oscar just used them as a nappy and wouldn't bother going to the loo/potty if he had one on and would just sit in it, wet, all day if i let him! From the comments here they seem to be more effective for girs than boys - wouldn't have a clue why that would be. Oscar only clicked when i bit the bullet and put him in jocks and he's only had very few accidents - but then he was over 3 and we'd been trying for 6 months!

We found pull ups ok if only used occasionally - ie. if we were going to the supermarket or somewhere that it would be a major pain if she had an accident.
If we overused them they just became like nappies and totally pointless.
Whenever she had pullups we had to make a huge deal of her using the toilet and not the pull up, and keep their use to a minimum.

Cai, I say go the undies. I know it is tricky if you are going to be in a workplace, but from what I haev seen and heard of Seth he is a fast learner.

Even Charlie only had a few accidents (less than 5?) in jocks before he "got it".

We did a week at home with jocks on (nappies for bed) and by the Wednesday he was done.

It really sounds like Seth is ready.....& if they are ready, it seems to be quick......
