Ok, a slightly odd question perhaps? The last few nappy changes, I've noticed that there have been little crystal type things on DD's bits (BTW - it is only a wet nappy. Heavy but not at capacity by any means). Do you think this is from the nappy? And if so, is this suppose to happen? I know, I'm totally clueless.....
Yep it's the absorbant crystals. I don't think they're supposed to come out but I remember from when I used disposables it didn't happen with every nappy. Maybe some have more crystals than others
I just googled this on the Huggies site and found the following;
Q. What is the gel I have found on my baby's skin?
A. Huggies Nappies contain a super absorbent ingredient called Polyacrylate, which is mixed in with the nappy padding. This material turns liquid into gel, helping prevent nappy leakage. Occasionally this safe, gel material will seep out of the pad and onto your baby's skin. The gel material is quite safe and will not harm your baby in any way.
Q. How do I remove the gel from my baby's skin?
A. If you notice a small amount of gel like material on your baby's skin simply remove it with a baby wipe or a damp washcloth.
Babylove brand is bad for this. I have had this happen once with huggies and it was when we were doing a long car trip so she was sitting on it (as opposed to lying down or being held/carried etc). It was heavy but not chockers! It hasn't happened since so we put it down to the sitting thing.
Yeah, I found it happened with one packet of Babylove nappies I bought while we were on holidays. The next packet was fine though... Maybe there are bad batches - you could always try to get them replaced as Danni suggested.
Ok, I just sent an email off to Huggies - I will let you know how I go... I wouldn't mind if it ws the odd nappy - but every nappy in a pack? I worry one of the little crystals will travel where crystals shouldn't be travelling in my little girl!
My nearest Aldi is about 30min away so I can't be bothered going that far just for nappies... although I've heard a rumour that one may be opening up in my suburb soon....
Everytime I've tried babylove I get and explosion of crystals, sometimes even when the nappy isn't that full. I get a bit here and there from huggies, only if it's really full. Have you tried the you'll love coles nappies? They're good.
i must be just lucky cause i have never ever had crystals come out of Huggies nappies and DS night nappy is always either full up or leaking by morning. the only nappies that did this for DS was bilo brand so i chucked the whole lot out and never bought them again, maybe it was just a dud packet then...??? Goodluck, hope huggies replaces them for you.
Thought I would come back and update everyone on what happened after I emailed Huggies to let them know about the crystals. Today I heard a thump on the front porch and assumed it was just another parcel delivery so ignored it. When I went out to check the mail (I know, I'm slack but I'm sick of parcels!) there was a package from Kimberley Clark - they sent me a replacement pack of nappies and a letter of apology stating it was probably just too many crystals and they will let quality assurance know!
It's amazing how everyone has had different experiences with the crystals in Baby Love and Huggies. So maybe the crystals may have something to do with something in the wee depending on what mum eats if breastfed or what formula if formula fed. It's just strange that everyone has different experiences with the same nappies.
I've worked in the manufacturing industry making medical dressings and it's easy for there to be so much variance.
They would have a target amount of crystals to be included in the nappy, but there would also be a window of tolerance between too much and not enough. Quality control is there but at the end of the day the workers are only human and a few would get through that aren't right.
